Satisfied, Wu Rong naturally paid no attention to Rao Jie's phone situation, contentedly holding her and falling asleep.
It wasn't until the next morning that Rao Jie discovered numerous missed calls on her phone. Half were from her mother, and half from her older brother. There was also a message from her father.
“Jie Jie, where are you? Come home quickly. Please don’t do anything wrong.”
Rao Jie felt a wave of confusion wash over her. What was going on? Even during the New Year, her mother and brother hadn’t contacted her at all. Why had they suddenly called multiple times overnight? And what did her father's message mean?
After thinking for a moment, Rao Jie decided to contact her father first to clarify things. She sent a message to Rao Gang, asking what was wrong. Almost immediately, Rao Gang called her back.
“Dad?” she answered, slightly taken aback.
“Jie Jie! What’s going on? You need to tell me honestly where you are and who you’re with. You said you were living with your girlfriend; that must be a lie, right? If you’re short on money, just tell me! What’s going on…”
Rao Jie was stunned into silence, about to respond when Wu Rong, who had been sleeping beside her, woke up.
Wu Rong didn’t think much of it; still groggy, he turned over and wrapped his arms around Rao Jie’s waist, trying to rest his head against her.
“Huh? Who are you talking to so early in the morning? Can’t a person get some sleep?”
His deep, drowsy voice was captured by the phone.
On the other end of the line, Rao Gang’s mind exploded. Initially skeptical of his son’s firm words, he now found himself hearing a man who had just woken up next to his daughter early in the morning.
Having been brainwashed by Rao Jian earlier, his mind automatically translated the situation. Of course, Rao Jian wouldn’t slander his sister. His daughter had always been so well-behaved; how could she… be like this?
For a father, even if he usually had little say at home and didn’t involve himself much in his children’s affairs, suddenly discovering his daughter’s secret and hearing something like this ignited a fierce protective instinct within him.
Rao Gang's hand trembled with anger as he held the phone.
"Rao Jie!"
Rao Jie, momentarily distracted by Wu Rong, failed to respond to Rao Gang's call. It was only when Rao Gang shouted her name that she realized he must have heard Wu Rong's voice. The thought of her father hearing such suggestive sounds made her feel embarrassed.
Quickly, she reached out to cover Wu Rong's mouth, casting him a sideways glance.
Wu Rong looked back at her with wide, innocent eyes, as if he had just woken up from a daze.
Rao Jie hurriedly said, "Dad, I'm here. I'm listening."
"You come home right now! Immediately!" Rao Gang was furious and had no intention of questioning her over the phone. He just wanted her to return home quickly and get away from that filthy place.
Rao Jie was confused. "Dad, what's going on all of a sudden?"
"I'm the one who should be asking you what's going on! Your brother saw everything! Our family is respectable; how could such a thing happen? You need to come home right away. I’m taking the day off work to resolve this issue. Do you hear me?"
Rao Jie felt even more bewildered. What had her brother said to make their father so angry? And why did it seem like she had done something wrong?
