However, Rao Jie was certain that she had not done anything wrong, which left only one possibility: a misunderstanding.
Rao Gang and Huang Xiang were arguing incessantly, and Rao Jie could only shout, "Enough! If you want to hit me or scold me, at least tell me what happened! How did I embarrass you? I haven't done anything! What are you talking about?"
Huang Xiang glared at Rao Jie with red eyes, looking genuinely furious, which made Rao Jie even more confused.
Rao Jie took a deep breath and said, "What have you heard? Why do you look like I've done something wrong? I don't understand. Can you stop yelling and just tell me what’s going on?"
Huang Xiang trembled with anger, "How can you even say that? What good deed do you think you've done? Do you really think you can hide it forever? If someone we know sees it, where will I put my face? You... you're driving me crazy!"
Rao Jie understood Huang Xiang well; once she started complaining like this, it would go on forever. She turned to Rao Gang and asked, "Dad, please tell me what's going on. What are you and Mom blaming me for?"
Rao Gang's face was grim, as if he found it hard to speak. "You... you... tell me about the man's voice I heard this morning. What were you doing?"
What were they doing? Rao Jie hadn't expected her father to ask that right away, and she felt embarrassed.
"Dad, that's my personal privacy. Even though you're my dad, I'm an adult now; I don't need to report everything to my family. Didn't my brother stay out all night a few years ago? You seemed pretty open-minded about that."
Rao Gang immediately replied, "That's not the same!"
Rao Jie was taken aback. Did he mean boys and girls were treated differently? But discussing such matters with her parents was really uncomfortable.
Huang Xiang finally caught on after a while. "Oh! So you actually... what kind of wild man? How can you be so shameless and act so righteous?"
Rao Jie frowned and said, "Even if I just started college, it doesn't mean I'm shameless! Besides, I'm about to graduate; I've been an adult for years now. Why are you suddenly so concerned about this? I remember my brother brought his girlfriend home overnight, and you didn’t say anything then!"
Huang Xiang was furious when she heard Rao Jie’s constant excuses and comparisons with her brother's actions. She grabbed a nearby plastic cup of cold water and threw it at Rao Jie.
Though it was plastic and didn't hurt much when it hit her, Rao Jie was stunned. She didn’t feel she had said anything wrong; how had she provoked Huang Xiang’s anger even more?
Rao Jie looked at Huang Xiang in confusion.
But Huang Xiang shouted angrily, "Can you even compare yourself to your brother? He has a normal girlfriend he brings home! What about you? You're being kept by someone else as a mistress! Selling your body for money? How can you argue with us? How could we have a daughter like you?"
Rao Jie was bewildered by Huang Xiang's outburst; for a moment, she couldn't even process what her mother was saying. Looking at Huang Xiang's furious expression made her feel as if she were the source of shame for her family.
