I was thinking about my wife and simply replied, "I'm here to find someone."
She nodded and continued talking to herself, "Actually, the environment here is quite nice. You could consider buying property here; whether for investment or personal use, it’s a good deal, haha."
I thought to myself how impressive it was that this woman could strike up a conversation with a stranger for no reason at all. Just then, the elevator doors slowly opened, and she said to me, "We're at the twenty-fourth floor. Until we meet again."
I nodded at her and hurriedly stepped out of the elevator. Murong Jingjiang expressed a hint of impatience in his eyes, clearly uninterested in the woman's small talk at that moment.
The building's door numbers were uniform, displayed above each room's entrance. I followed the numbers and quickly found room 2408.
The door was slightly ajar, and my heart raced as I gently pushed it open and cautiously stepped inside. To my shock, I saw a woman lying on the floor.
The clothes she wore were exactly what my wife, Qian Qiushui, had on when she left this morning. The most horrifying part was that her head had been severed and lay beside her body. Yes, what I saw was a corpse!
As Murong Jingjiang recounted this, a look of terror crossed his face, and his body trembled slightly as if he were reliving that dreadful scene.
At that moment, the woman's head was turned away from me. I swallowed hard; my throat felt dry with fear as I hesitated whether to step closer to see who she really was when suddenly a sharp pain struck my head. I realized this sensation was because someone had hit me with a hard object.
But before I could even turn around to grasp what was happening, my consciousness quickly faded away, and then I lost all sense of awareness.
I don't know how long it had been—perhaps ten minutes or maybe several hours, even a day and night—but eventually, I slowly regained consciousness. The headless corpse was still in front of me.
"Could she really be my wife? Who killed my wife? Was it the person who just attacked me? Then why didn't he kill me too?"
Murong Jingjiang looked bewildered, his eyes filled with confusion and pain.
"I was in a state of chaos, my mind blank. Just then, there were three loud bangs that echoed, and I was startled; it sounded like gunshots. Suddenly, the door was kicked open, and two men burst in. I was so panicked that my head was buzzing, and I couldn't see what those two men looked like at all.
Now I realize that one of those men was Detective Wang Sicong, and the other was you—Detective Ma Mingxia."
Murong Jingjiang looked at Ma Mingxia, his gaze carrying a hint of hope.
"At that moment, Detective Wang pointed his gun at me and shouted, 'Don't move! We're the police! Raise your hands! Get down!'
I screamed in fear, 'Don't shoot! I don't know anything!' At the same time, I raised my hands and crouched down.
Then Detective Wang said to you, 'Mingxia, go check the situation inside the house.'
You replied, 'Got it!' and then left the hall.
As you left, Detective Wang made a phone call. He said on the phone, 'This is Wang Sicong. A homicide has occurred here; the suspect has been subdued. Currently, only Ma Mingxia and I are on-site. Please send support immediately to assist us. The address is Room 2408, Building 5, Baoyin Building.'"
Murong Jingjiang recalled clearly, recounting the dialogue from that time.
"After a while, you came out of the hall, and Detective Wang said to you, 'Mingxia, I've called for backup from the detective team. You stay on-site while I take the suspect back to the station.'"
"You said, 'Alright!' and then Detective Wang took me away."
" Detective Wang handcuffed my hands and made me sit in the passenger seat of the police car while he took the driver's seat.
The car drove for a few minutes before suddenly making a screeching sound and breaking down.
Detective Wang ordered me to stay in the car while he got out to make repairs. I closed my eyes, trying to sort through what had happened that morning: was that headless female corpse really my wife, Qian Qiushui? Did the murderer lure me to the crime scene through my wife, intending to frame me for the murder?
If that were true, then his plan had succeeded; the police clearly believed I was the killer." Murong Jingjiang said, a look of despair crossing his face.
"About half an hour later, Detective Wang fixed the police car. He got back in and continued driving, and half an hour after that, we arrived at the Public Security Bureau.
That’s everything I experienced this morning; I’ve tried to recount all the details I remember. Detective Ma, I really didn’t kill anyone, please believe me!"
Murong Jingjiang leaned forward, gripping his hands tightly, his eyes filled with earnestness.
