"Did you know all along?" Yang Qianfan asked, a hint of surprise in his voice.
"Yes!" Li Lingfei nodded at him, smiling. "Aren't you the famous Yang Qianfan? Your name is well-known, echoing through the skies."
"You've heard of me before?" Yang Qianfan was even more astonished.
"Indeed, though your reputation isn't exactly flattering," Li Lingfei said, her smile unwavering and her tone calm.
"I..." Yang Qianfan was momentarily speechless, his face flushing red. He felt as if he had been stripped bare and thrown into a circus to perform with monkeys, utterly humiliated.
"But now that I've met you in person, and you even saved me, I believe those negative rumors about you must be unfounded and should not be trusted."
"Y-yes!" Yang Qianfan quickly lowered his head, feeling embarrassed. Grateful for Li Lingfei's attempt to ease the tension, he awkwardly chuckled, "I just happen to know a few more friends, yet people label me as a villain. It's really unfair!"
Li Lingfei smiled but remained silent. Feeling somewhat guilty, Yang Qianfan decided to change the subject. "Do you remember the 'National Day Celebration Performance' we had at school last time?"
"Of course! I had a performance then!" Li Lingfei replied cheerfully.
"Do you recall someone coming on stage to present flowers to you?" Yang Qianfan prompted her.
Li Lingfei rolled her eyes thoughtfully toward the flower stand before shaking her head. "The atmosphere was so lively that I don't really remember what that person looked like."
Yang Qianfan felt a chill run through him when he realized she had forgotten that he was the one who presented her with flowers. He lowered his head even further, awkwardly forcing a smile as he muttered, "I was the one who came on stage to give you flowers. Do you remember now?"
Upon hearing this, Li Lingfei's eyes widened in realization as she pointed at him in surprise. "Oh! So you were the one who presented me with flowers! I'm so sorry; I completely forgot about you."
"It's fine, it's fine. It's just as good to know each other now," Yang Qianfan said with a wry smile, trying to smooth over the moment.
Li Lingfei felt that the atmosphere was becoming too awkward, so she decided to change the subject. "Do you know Wang Yuhan from the Sophomore class? I heard he has a good relationship with you."
"Wang Yuhan? How do you know him too?" Yang Qianfan's eyes widened in surprise.
Li Lingfei nodded. "Yes, he used to be my neighbor. We have been classmates since kindergarten until we reached Sophomore year. The school divided us into different tracks—he went into science, and I went into humanities—so we couldn't continue studying in the same class." She sighed regretfully, lowering her gaze, her long, thick eyelashes casting a shadow on her face.
"What? You’ve known Wang Yuhan for that long? Doesn’t that make you two childhood sweethearts?" Yang Qianfan exclaimed, nearly fainting from the shock.
Upon hearing this, Li Lingfei blushed slightly and replied, "I find it strange too. How is it that we've been classmates for so many years and yet I don't know if it's fate or coincidence?" She smiled happily as she took a sip of her juice.
"Since you've known each other for so long, why have I never heard him mention you before?" Yang Qianfan clenched his fists in excitement, frustration boiling within him. He was angry that his friend knew he was pursuing Li Lingfei yet never shared any information about her, acting as if he didn’t know her at all. Jealousy surged as he realized his friend had known his crush for so long; thinking about it made him even more upset.
"Well, he never mentioned you to me either," Li Lingfei said dismissively. Her expression suddenly darkened as if she recalled something. She sighed and reflected, "Wang Yuhan has always been like that—quiet and reserved. Whether it's good news or bad news, he prefers to keep everything to himself and never shares a word with anyone."
"People say he has autism; it's not surprising that he doesn't like to talk."
"How did someone as talkative as you become friends with him?" Li Lingfei asked curiously.
Yang Qianfan raised both hands and mimicked a basketball shooting pose. "Basketball! That’s our most important common language."
"I see! He often taught me how to play basketball back then," Li Lingfei said with a smile as she remembered those moments when Wang Yuhan coached her.
"He started teaching you basketball back then?" Yang Qianfan's jealousy intensified at this revelation.
"Yes!" Li Lingfei nodded, reminiscing, "I remember he often rode his bike to take me to the lighted basketball court to teach me how to play. But after his parents divorced, he rarely played basketball anymore, so he stopped teaching me." She sighed with a sense of loss, lingering on the memories.
"I see," Yang Qianfan said through gritted teeth, forcing a smile while feeling an intense anger towards Wang Yuhan, wishing he could kick him to death.
After chatting about Wang Yuhan for a while, Yang Qianfan glanced at his phone; it was almost one-thirty, time to settle the bill and leave. He waved over a waiter, intending to pay. Li Lingfei was puzzled by his willingness to foot the bill. Although she was curious, she didn’t think much of it and took out her wallet, quickly calling the waiter to insist on paying.
However, her attempt was immediately thwarted by Yang Qianfan. He grabbed her hand as she reached for her money and smiled elegantly at her like a gentleman. "This is your allowance for a week; how could I bear to let you go hungry for that long? How about this: next time, you can treat me to a bowl of noodle soup."
"Is that really okay?" Li Lingfei felt uneasy as she looked at him, slightly embarrassed but secretly pleased.
Yang Qianfan smiled and nodded at her. "Yes, I know a noodle shop that makes delicious soup noodles. Next time I'll take you there, but you have to pay."
Li Lingfei smiled back at him and nodded in agreement. After that, they headed back to school together for class.
