Chapter 7: The Fear That Gripped Her
The sky remained overcast for several days.
Ever since Ning Bao was kidnapped and Qin Xi stayed by Mu Jinhang's side, Ji Li's mood had been consistently gloomy, much like the dreary weather.
That evening, Ji Li had just stepped out of his study when a servant hurriedly approached him. "Mr. Ji, Qin Jie is here. She doesn't seem to be well."
Ji Li quickly descended the stairs and found Qin Xi sitting on the sofa, her eyes red and swollen from crying. Her once delicate features were now puffy, making her look heart-wrenching.
He rushed over in a single stride. "Xi, who did this to your face?"
"Ji Li, he blames me... he blames me for losing Ning Bao!" Qin Xi suddenly threw herself into Ji Li's arms, her shoulders trembling lightly. "It's my fault for not having an assistant stay with Ning Bao, which has led to him being missing until now."
The soft sound of her sobbing tugged at Ji Li's heart. He gently stroked Qin Xi's cheek. "Did Mu Jinhang hurt you?"
Qin Xi bit her lip and remained silent, tears streaming down her face.
"That bastard!" Ji Li clenched his fists, ready to confront Mu Jinhang, but was stopped by Qin Xi tugging at his shirt.
"Please don't confront him," she said with tear-filled eyes, looking utterly worn out. "All I want right now is to find Ning Bao and take him back to France."
"You want to go back to France?" Ji Li sat back down, his voice unexpectedly gentle.
Qin Xi forced a bitter smile. "What else can I do? Stay here and endure this torment? He won't let me or Ning Bao go."
Ji Li wrapped his arms around her softly. "Alright, no matter where you want to go, I will be with you and Ning Bao."
After dinner, Ji Li applied medicine to Qin Xi's cheek and comforted her, "Get a good night's sleep. Don't wear yourself out. Maybe there will be news about Ning Bao tomorrow."
"Really?" Qin Xi looked intently at Ji Li, as if the moment he confirmed it, Ning Bao would return.
Ji Li gently touched her forehead. "Trust me, we'll find Ning Bao soon."
Qin Xi nodded softly.
As night deepened, it enveloped everything like a thick black ink, swallowing all the lights.
It was already midnight, and Ji Li had not yet slept; the study was brightly lit.
After finishing all his tasks, his brows finally relaxed. As he stepped out of the study, he happened to see Qin Xi hurriedly walking towards the garden behind the villa, looking quite anxious.
Ji Li stared at her figure, suddenly frowning, then quietly followed her.
The garden was very quiet, near the distant Ran Lake and Natural Conservation Forest. Occasionally, a clear bird call echoed from afar, making the night feel especially silent.
Qin Xi was on the phone, her voice low and restrained.
"Ji Li believes me now... Yeah, I know. I will take good care of myself." Her intermittent voice reached Ji Li's ears, but she didn't notice anyone behind her. "Mu Jinhang, I'm scared."
Qin Xi seemed to recall something and shivered violently.
Just then, she suddenly caught sight of a shadow appearing on the ground.
“Ah!” Qin Xi turned around and couldn’t help but scream upon seeing Ji Li’s face, stepping back repeatedly. “Ji Li, what are you doing here?”
Ji Li revealed a gentle smile. “Xi, are you trying to deceive me with Mu Jinhang?”
Qin Xi's heart raced as she continued to retreat.
Ji Li stepped closer, one step at a time. “Why are you lying to me? Do you know something? Has Mu Jinhang found out Ning Bao’s whereabouts?”
“Don’t come any closer!” Even though it was still the refined Ji Li, he sent chills down Qin Xi's spine.
“Xi, don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you like Mu Jinhang would. Let’s go back to France together, and we can bring Ning Bao with us…” Ji Li inched closer to her.
Qin Xi turned and ran!
She didn’t dare look back, panic-stricken as she fled along the artificial lake.
When she finally stopped, exhausted and unable to run any longer, she realized she had reached a remote and unfamiliar place, and there was no sign of Ji Li pursuing her from behind.
