Hu Xiuying noticed that Xiao Lei, who usually kept to himself, was being unusually diligent. She understood the reason behind it and felt a warmth in her cheeks as she said, “You silly girl, isn’t it nice that he’s serving you? Just sit down.” Deep down, she felt a sense of joy; Xiao Lei had finally changed for the better.
Xiao Cai quickly took a seat and kept asking, “Mom, what’s up with Xiao Lei today?”
“How would I know?” Hu Xiuying replied. “You can ask him yourself later.”
“Wow, it’s like the sun is rising in the west,” Xiao Cai muttered.
A moment later, Xiao Lei brought over the food. “Here you go, eat up! The rice is getting cold,” he said with concern.
Xiao Cai was taken aback. “Second Brother, what’s gotten into you today? I’ve never seen you so lively before!”
She stared at him with wide eyes.
Seeing Xiao Cai’s exaggerated reaction, Hu Xiuying couldn’t help but chuckle as she lowered her head to eat.
After laughing a little, Xiao Lei said, “How about I keep this up from now on?” He glanced at Hu Xiuying as he spoke.
Upon seeing this, Hu Xiuying felt her face flush and quickly focused on her food.
“If you keep this up, our whole family will be thrilled! Hee hee hee,” Xiao Cai said happily.
“Eat up; the food is getting cold,” Hu Xiuying urged.
“Mom, do you have time this morning?” Xiao Cai asked.
“What’s up?” Hu Xiuying replied while eating.
“Look at this outfit; I’ve been wearing it for years. Can you take me to the city to buy a new one? I’m already 17 and haven’t worn anything decent,” Xiao Cai said.
Hu Xiuying suddenly recalled what Xiao Lei had said to her last night and felt a pang of unhappiness. Yes, her children really did suffer more than others. At school, Xiao Lei was looked down upon by his peers, and now Xiao Cai didn’t even have a decent outfit. As a mother, it pained her heart. She quickly said, “Alright, we’ll go after we finish eating.”
“Mom, you’re the best! Once we’re in the city, you should buy something nice for yourself too. You haven’t worn new clothes in ages!” Xiao Cai exclaimed joyfully.
Hu Xiuying thought to herself, where would she find the money? She only had a little over 200. So she hurriedly said, "I'll talk about it later."
After they finished their meal, Hu Xiuying and her daughter Xiao Cai went into the city, leaving Xiao Lei alone at home.
"Xiao Lei! Xiao Lei!" Someone outside was calling for him loudly.
Upon hearing his cousin Li Jinliang's voice, Xiao Lei quickly ran out of the yard and saw Li Jinliang standing at the gate calling for him.
"What’s up, cousin?" Since Li Jinliang was a year older than Xiao Lei, he addressed him as cousin.
"My older brother is going out of town for work today. Can you come with me to see him off? He has a lot of luggage, and it would be great if you could help me carry some," Li Jinliang said.
It turned out that his older brother, Li Jincun, was going to work in another city, so he came to ask for help.
"Sure!" Xiao Lei replied eagerly. He had nothing to do that morning and was feeling bored at home.
The two of them arrived at Jin Liang's house and saw Cousin carrying his luggage. Cousin Zhao Lihong was also holding a bag, wanting to see her husband Li Jinliang off. They also noticed Auntie leading her five-year-old grandson following behind.
When Auntie saw Xiao Lei, her face turned red involuntarily, and she quickly lowered her head. It was embarrassing for her to see her little admirer in front of the whole family.
Xiao Lei didn’t say anything to her and quickly grabbed Zhao Lihong's luggage, saying, "Sister-in-law, Auntie, you don’t need to see us off. Jin Liang and I can go by ourselves."
"Alright then," Sister-in-law said as she handed over the luggage to them. She watched the three of them leave before returning inside with Grandma Zhen Yujuan and the little child.
Xiao Lei and Jin Liang sent Jincun off at the village bus stop. After watching the bus leave, they slowly walked back.
"Xiao Lei, how about I take you out to have some fun this afternoon?" Jin Liang asked.
"I have something to do this afternoon," Xiao Lei remembered he had plans with his mother to go to the woods later, feeling a surge of excitement inside.
At that moment, Li Jinliang was particularly happy. He had gotten together with his sister-in-law Zhao Lihong last year, but with his older brother at home every day, he had always felt it was inconvenient to be sneaky. Now that his brother was going out for work, he felt free. He told Xiao Lei, "I'm really happy today. I originally wanted to take you into the city for some fun, but since you have something else to do, we’ll skip it."
"What's so fun about playing?" Xiao Lei asked.
"Hehe, of course it's women," Jin Liang chuckled. "By the way, have you ever played with a woman?"
Xiao Lei thought to himself, I've already played with your mother, but he replied, "No, do you play often?"
"Yeah, I've played with quite a few, but they were all trash. There was one woman who really caught my heart; playing with her was thrilling and exciting," Jin Liang said, drooling at the thought of her.
"Who is this woman?" Xiao Lei asked, curious about his proud expression.
"I can't tell you," Jin Liang said mysteriously.
The more Jin Liang acted this way, the more Xiao Lei wanted to know. "Come on, I won't tell anyone else. You know I don't talk much usually; don't you trust me?"
Jin Liang considered this and decided to share, wanting Xiao Lei to feel impressed. "But you have to promise not to tell anyone."
Xiao Lei quickly assured him, "I promise I won't say a word. Don't you believe me?"
Then Jin Liang leaned in close to Xiao Lei's ear and whispered, "My Sister-in-law, Zhao Lihong."
"Ah!" Xiao Lei exclaimed in surprise.
