Aunt Wang said, "Everyone in the village knows your sister is going to die. She's not really a person anymore."
She grasped my hand, her tone laced with urgency. "When the time comes for them to send her off, you mustn't lend a hand."
"Before your sister dies, it's best if you don't even look at her."
I was confused. "Aunt Wang, what does this mean?"
Aunt Wang glanced around nervously. "There's no time to explain everything now. If you want to stay alive, just listen to me."
"I won't harm you."
With that, Aunt Wang hurried away, leaving me with more questions than answers. She kept reiterating, "Don't trust anyone."
When I returned home, I found a group of men lined up outside my sister's door. They were discussing her graceful figure, saying it was the first time in years they had seen her looking so beautiful. Killing my sister would ensure the village's livelihood this year.
I hid in the corner, chills running down my spine. It turned out my sister had been raised as a mermaid for such a purpose.
The next morning, I was awakened by a piercing scream. I rushed out of my room to find my sister naked in a fish tank, her limbs held down by several burly men.
She looked at Mother in terror and cried, "Mom, help me..."
Mother approached and patted my sister's face gently. "Good daughter, I've taken care of you so well for all these years."
"I've done my part; now it's time for you to repay me."
With that, Mother signaled for someone to slit my sister's throat and let her bleed out.
I suddenly remembered Aunt Wang's words and quickly stepped aside, fearing that the last person my sister would see would be me.
As I held my breath, watching the knife being raised, the sky changed dramatically in an instant. What had been a clear blue sky was suddenly filled with flashes of lightning and booming thunder, as torrential rain began to pour down.
Amidst the thunder and rain, I heard the village chief's astonished growl: "Something strange is happening; what on earth is going on with this girl?"
I looked up to see what appeared to be countless fish darting through the clouds at the horizon, pressing down towards the ground as rain fell in sheets. This was... the pressure of thunder.
While everyone was momentarily stunned, water quickly filled our yard. I noticed that many fish had appeared in the water without anyone realizing it.
These fish were unlike any ordinary fish. They came in all colors—white, black, yellow, green, red—each sporting sharp teeth and gaping mouths, forming large clusters. The sight sent shivers down the spines of everyone present.
"Chief, what on earth is happening?" Mother trembled as she hid beside the village chief.
"Do these fish... mean that Xiao Shuang cannot be killed?"
The village chief remained silent, his face dark as he calculated something with his fingers. After a while, he shook his head at Mother: "It's nothing to worry about; it's just a coincidence. We can drive these fish away with sticks; we can't let them affect the price of the mermaids."
The villagers hesitated at first, but upon hearing that these fish could impact their fortunes, they quickly dismissed their concerns. They rushed to our house to grab sticks and began striking at the fish swarm. The fish scattered in all directions, swimming away frantically.
It was at that moment that the village chief swiftly slashed my sister's throat with the knife in his hand. Blood instantly soaked the ground beneath us.
Mother was momentarily stunned before bursting into laughter. The entire yard descended into chaos as she laughed loudly: "My Xiao Shuang, we’re going to get rich!"
I stood there in a daze, watching the bloody scene before me, feeling cold sweat break out all over my body and my mind spinning. I pinched my thigh and quickly ran out of the house.
As I ran, I collided with Aunt Wang. The moment she saw my family's yard, her face turned ashen. She opened her mouth as if to say something, but in the end, no words came out. Instead, she grabbed my arm and led me to her home.
Once we arrived at Aunt Wang's house, she opened the doors and windows to check for anyone following us. After confirming that we were alone, she turned to me.
"What on earth happened at your house?"
I recounted everything that had transpired at home to Aunt Wang in detail. After listening, she trembled with anger. "The village chief is really foolish! What he’s doing will endanger the entire village!"
I looked at Aunt Wang in terror. "Aunt Wang, what is going on?"
