Rao Jie still remembered that during her university days, there was an incident when Huang Xiang broke his leg. Despite this, Rao Jian continued to live his life as usual, indulging in pleasures and even complaining that Huang Xiang couldn't help him with chores. It was Rao Jie who took care of Huang Xiang at home, while Rao Jian did nothing at all.
At that time, Rao Jie thought to herself that if this trend continued, she doubted Rao Jian would ever take care of their aging parents. After all, he couldn't even be bothered to look after himself. Was this really the outcome their parents had hoped for?
Huang Xiang was bedridden for three months, and it was Rao Jie who busied herself with everything. However, once Huang Xiang was able to get out of bed, his first reaction was still to take good care of his precious son, feeling guilty for the accident and unable to help him network or make connections.
Realizing this, Rao Jie vowed to herself that she would achieve something in the future to show her parents that she wouldn’t fare worse than her elder brother and would be even more filial towards them.
But gradually, Rao Jie came to understand that she had been mistaken. It didn’t matter to her parents whether she attended the best high school or university or even pursued a graduate degree. What mattered was whether she could assist her elder brother.
If she were the sister, Rao Jie was certain that their parents would not hesitate to ask her for money once she started working, expecting her to support her brother. To some parents, this wasn’t exploitation; it was merely helping out their eldest son. Wasn’t it natural for an elder sister to support her younger brother without expecting repayment? If one were to complain about it, they would be seen as ungrateful.
However, since she was born later—much later—she couldn’t support her elder brother. Instead, her family sought other ways to utilize her value. It was like that time during a blind date; everything in her life seemed prioritized around her brother.
Although Rao Jie didn’t want to harbor such extreme thoughts, she couldn’t help but feel envious when observing Wu Xin’s family situation. They had the same parents and siblings; how could the disparity be so vast?
All children are born of their parents; why should there be such a significant difference in treatment simply because of gender? Rao Jie never considered that being a daughter meant pushing all responsibilities of caring for their parents onto her elder brother. She was willing to take care of them too.
Yet, she hadn’t anticipated that their bias towards her elder brother had reached such a level that he could say anything and they would believe him completely, turning against her in an instant.
Rao Jie touched her ear again; the bleeding had stopped, but it still hurt if she touched it. Yet this physical pain couldn’t suppress the emotional hurt within her.
Huang Xiang’s insults continued in front of her, but Rao Jie felt detached from it all. As expected, he still didn’t give her any chance to speak.
“How can you say such things? If you don’t want to be my daughter anymore, how can you utter such heartless words?”
“Ha! Wasn’t it you who said it first?” Rao Jie replied numbly.
Huang Xiang shouted angrily, “You dare talk back to me!”
Rao Gang quickly intervened, “Alright now, let’s hear what Rao Jie has to say. It might just be a misunderstanding!”
"What misunderstanding could there be? With something this serious, could Rao Jian really deceive us? He saw Rao Jie with an older man last night, openly hugging and flirting on the street. That man even bought her designer bags and clothes. They went to a hotel together, and later the man's partner came looking for them, causing a scene. Didn't you just say you heard a man's voice? If this is all just a misunderstanding, then what isn't?"
Rao Gang recalled the man's voice he had heard. He had always thought his daughter was well-behaved and never gave him any trouble, so he couldn't believe she would do something like this.
