Rao Jie closed her eyes briefly. She cherished Wu Rong, believing he was precious and deserving of all the beautiful things in life. She had originally intended to introduce her boyfriend formally under harmonious family circumstances, where her parents had expectations, rather than in a situation where they mistakenly thought she was being kept by Wu Rong and maintaining an improper relationship. That would have been too degrading for him.
But now, she had reached a point where she had to speak up.
"I wanted to find a good opportunity to formally introduce you to him. In fact, you've met him before; he was the one who took you to the hospital that day. He’s my university professor and also Wu Xin's older brother. His name is Wu Rong, and he is my boyfriend now."
The mention of Wu Rong's name warmed Rao Jie’s heart, making her feel much better.
"He is a few years older than me, but I wouldn't describe him as an old man. Last night, we had just attended his high school reunion at that mall when Rao Jian saw us as we were leaving. Is that clear enough? Are you still going to slander me?"
The other three members of the Rao family exchanged glances.
Rao Jian had never met Wu Rong before, so he was unaware of who this person was. However, Rao Gang and Huang Xiang had seen him; he was that cold, seemingly ill-tempered university professor. Although he looked quite handsome and appeared wealthy, they never imagined that such a man would be dating their daughter.
Moreover, they knew Wu Xin well; after all, she had been friends with Rao Jie since high school and often came over to play. They had heard about her parents frequently traveling abroad and that her brother was studying in a foreign country. The neighborhood they lived in was upscale, indicating they were well-off.
Since he was Wu Xin's brother, it ruled out any possibility of a kept relationship. It seemed this was indeed a misunderstanding. They just hadn’t expected Rao Jie to start dating so soon.
Huang Xiang's first reaction wasn’t regret over her previous actions but rather a sense of loss. Since Rao Jie was already in a relationship with someone who seemed decent, it would be difficult to force her into an engagement with Young Master Hu.
Rao Gang recalled when Wu Rong came to meet him; he had felt that Wu Rong showed excessive concern and care for his daughter at the time, which struck him as odd. But he hadn’t thought much of it then. Now everything made sense.
Upon hearing that Rao Jie was officially dating someone—a university professor and Wu Xin's brother—Rao Jian became anxious. If she were being kept by someone, he felt there might still be hope for bringing her back through their parents' influence. However, if she already had a boyfriend with good prospects, their parents likely wouldn’t continue to pressure her; some things couldn’t be forced.
"You’re not just trying to avoid Young Master Hu by hastily finding some man to settle for, are you? You need to think carefully about your future! Young Master Hu won’t wait around for you. No matter how good this guy is, can he compare to the conditions of the Young Master Hu’s family? Are you out of your mind? Going through a rebellious phase? Deliberately opposing your family?"
Rao Jie shot a cold look at her own flesh-and-blood brother and said, "I’m considering my future seriously, which is exactly why I will never be with Young Master Hu. Even if I didn’t have anyone else right now, I wouldn’t."
Rao Jian felt his anger flare up; he wanted nothing more than to lash out at her but was held back.
Rao Jie looked at the three silent individuals and said, "Now do you understand that you wronged me? Just a moment ago, you were cursing me so passionately, wishing you could kill me?"
