A wave of guilt washed over Rao Gang, while Huang Xiang felt a mix of awkwardness and stubbornness. She knew she was wrong, but she didn’t want to admit it to her daughter. Instead, she stiffened her neck and awkwardly changed the subject.
“We’re just worried you might go down the wrong path. But you, who used to be so well-behaved, how did you become like this? So aggressive, speaking to your parents in that tone.”
“Just because I was well-behaved doesn’t mean I should be a punching bag for your frustrations. Is it my fault that I was too good before, making you think that any slight imperfection in me is a grave offense? If this is considered a grave offense, then what about him?”
Rao Jie felt that she had finally let out years of pent-up resentment due to this incident. It was particularly egregious, especially since it involved Wu Rong. She couldn’t allow anyone to speak ill of her relationship with Wu Rong.
“What’s wrong with you? Why do you feel the need to compare everything with your brother now?”
“Of course I can’t compare myself to my brother! He’s so precious to you both, the apple of your eye. One word from him can make you slap me across the face and humiliate me at will!”
“This… this is just a misunderstanding! Now that we’ve cleared things up, let’s not dwell on it. Come here, let me take a look at your injury! You know I’m not heavy-handed; next time just soften up a bit and avoid trouble!”
Huang Xiang tried to approach, but Rao Jie took a step back, her eyes filled with wariness and distrust.
Huang Xiang felt a pang of hurt but was more angry than anything else. There shouldn’t be any reason for children to hold grudges against their parents. She was wrong, but her intentions were rooted in concern for Rao Jie; she was afraid of her going astray! Why couldn’t she understand a parent’s heart?
“Why have you become so stubborn? Who taught you this?”
Who taught her? Perhaps it was Wu Rong. But she enjoyed who she was now.
Rao Gang quickly tried to mediate. “Oh, let’s not talk about this anymore. Jie Jie, we know we were wrong; it’s our fault for not asking clearly before getting angry. We were genuinely worried! Your mom has a sharp tongue but a soft heart; she couldn’t sleep all night after finding out last night, which is why she’s so upset today. You know how your mom is—be more understanding; she was really scared yesterday.”
Rao Jie remained silent, while Huang Xiang felt increasingly frustrated. She turned to find the first aid kit and handed it to Rao Gang.
Rao Gang waved at Rao Jie. “Come here; let me check your injury. If it’s serious, we should go to the hospital.”
This time, Rao Jie didn’t resist any longer. After venting her anger earlier, she now felt completely drained, and her ear truly hurt.
Rao Gang examined the injury closely and finally sighed in relief. “It’s okay; it’s just a cut. You must have applied too much force earlier; that’s why it hurts so much. It’ll feel better in a while. Let me take care of it.”
Rao Jie didn’t respond. In the quiet environment, the throbbing pain in her ear made her suppressed grievances spill over uncontrollably; her eyes reddened as tears welled up.
But no amount of complaints or grievances mattered now.
After all, these were still her family members across from her.
No matter how serious the argument or how great the conflict, in the end, there was only a sense of helplessness left.
This sense of helplessness can only be truly understood through personal experience; otherwise, it may simply appear as foolishness or a joke to others.
