Chapter Eight
I awoke in a haze, my head pounding as if it had been struck by a giant hammer. The suffocating darkness surrounded me, thick and impenetrable, with only the distant roar of the waves faintly echoing, like the whimper of a wounded beast. I tried to move, but found myself trapped beneath rubble, unable to budge. The air was heavy with a damp, moldy smell mixed with the nauseating scent of blood and salty seawater, as if the very essence of death was tightly wrapping around me.
"Fang Wen!" I struggled to call her name, my voice hoarse and echoing in the confined space, yet receiving no response. Fear coiled around my heart like a cold snake, making it nearly impossible to breathe. I fumbled for my phone; the screen's brightness pierced my eyes like a blade and illuminated the despairing wreckage around me. The bell tower had partially collapsed, and we were buried beneath the debris, as if forgotten by the world.
Suddenly, a faint groan emerged from the darkness, like the last cry for help from a drowning person. Following the sound, my heart raced as if it would leap from my chest at any moment. Behind a pile of rubble, I found Fang Wen. Her face was as pale as paper, a wound on her forehead oozing blood like a grotesque centipede, yet she remained conscious, her eyes filled with fear and pain.
"That box..." she weakly spoke, her voice trembling. "I saw..." Her words trailed off as she lost consciousness, like a marionette with severed strings. I quickly checked her vital signs; thankfully, she had only temporarily lost consciousness. In her tightly clenched hand lay the Metal Box, still intact but now transformed. Its surface was covered in intricate blue patterns resembling ancient and mysterious runes that glowed faintly in the dark, as if it possessed life. This glow unsettled me, suggesting that something terrible was about to unfold.
"Cough cough..." A violent coughing fit came from nearby; it was Old Li. He was trapped beneath a heavy beam, and his condition looked grim. Xu Kai and I worked together to lift the beam and free him. Old Li's leg was severely injured; his face was pale and his breathing rapid as he groaned in pain. "Where's Wang Ming?" he asked weakly, his voice trembling.
We looked around; at the far end of the ruins lay Wang Ming's lifeless body. His eyes were wide open, still wearing that maddened grin on his face as if mocking fate’s cruelty. He clutched the deformed detonator tightly in his hand, unable to close his eyes in death.
At that moment, the Metal Box suddenly began to shake violently; its blue light intensified as if it sought to consume all darkness. The box slowly opened to reveal an old hard drive and a stack of yellowed documents inside. As I flipped open the first page, shocking words leapt out at me—“Eternal Life Project Experiment Records.”
The documents detailed horrifying experiments: they used orphans as test subjects for various inhumane genetic modifications and organ transplants. Each page was filled with cold data and chilling experimental details that felt like words from hell itself. Most shocking of all was that these experiments had begun twenty years ago—how many innocent lives had been destroyed over such an extended period?
"This is the truth my sister discovered..." Fang Wen's weak voice broke through; she had regained consciousness, her eyes filled with sorrow and anger. "She intended to expose everything but they...," her voice choked up as tears silently streamed down her face.
Suddenly, a bright blue light shot from the hard drive, forming a holographic projection in midair. A young woman appeared on screen; she bore an uncanny resemblance to Fang Wen—it was her sister Fang Qing. This was a farewell video; Fang Qing's voice trembled with an ominous premonition of her fate.
"If you are watching this video, it means I may have..." Fang Qing's voice was filled with despair and helplessness. "I uncovered their secret; under the guise of 'Eternal Life,' they are conducting illegal human experiments. Those missing orphans and those 'accidentally deceased' patients are all their test subjects. And most terrifyingly, they have begun achieving success on their test subjects..."
The video abruptly cut off, leaving behind endless suspense and fear. At that moment, we heard footsteps approaching. Through the gaps in the ruins, I saw several beams of flashlight light drawing near. The sound of police sirens and voices reached us—we were saved!
But just then, the eerie skeleton suddenly "stood up" from the rubble. Its bones glowed with an unnatural blue light, identical to the patterns on the box. Flickering blue flames danced in its eye sockets, as if silently telling a story. "Sister?" Fang Wen suddenly exclaimed.
The skeleton slowly turned towards us, raising its arm to point at a concealed recess in the wall. Inside lay a thick stack of experimental records and a USB drive.
"All the evidence of the Eternal Life Project..." Xu Kai murmured, his voice filled with shock and disbelief.
At that moment, the skeleton began to tremble violently, the blue light becoming blinding, as if it intended to swallow us whole. We heard a piercing scream that seemed to emanate from the skeleton yet also felt distant and chilling. The skeleton began to disintegrate, transforming into specks of blue light that dissipated into the air as if it had never existed.
The sound of sirens grew closer, and the beams of flashlights pierced through the ruins. But we all knew that the terrifying truth witnessed that night was far from over. Those lost souls and buried sins would continue to linger on this isolated island.
What was most unsettling was when I glanced back at the Metal Box; I noticed its surface undergoing strange changes. The blue patterns began to writhe as if alive, gradually forming a line of text:
"The experiment will not end like this..."
