"This is the answer I've come to after much thought, and I have the right to choose what I want to do in the future," Rao Jie said stiffly.
Huang Xiang, furious, stood up abruptly. "You're becoming increasingly disobedient. I won't hold the past against you, but now you won't even listen to your parents on this matter? Do you realize you're going down the wrong path? This is wrong."
Rao Gang intervened, trying to calm the agitated Huang Xiang. "Don't raise your voice; it's been peaceful for a while."
Huang Xiang snapped back, "Am I the one making a fuss? Have you even listened to what she’s saying or what she’s planning? She’s throwing away a good graduate program and not looking for a proper job. Instead, she wants to start over as an apprentice making cakes. Isn’t that just ridiculous?"
Rao Jie couldn't help but explain, "It's not about being an apprentice; it's about enrolling in a formal school to learn pastry making. This is what I want to do."
"What do you mean 'what you want to do'? This is just a waste of talent! Tell me, how much does this education cost? How long will it take before you can graduate? Once you're out, how much will you earn? Isn’t it just about making desserts? You could just enjoy doing that at home; why are you going crazy over this? Let me tell you, we won’t be spending a single penny on this. And what about your boyfriend? Isn’t he a university professor? Doesn’t he oppose this madness?"
Rao Jie replied calmly, "He doesn’t oppose it; he supports me. You don’t need to worry; I won’t take any money from home."
Both Rao Gang and Huang Xiang were taken aback.
Huang Xiang immediately became suspicious, her eyes narrowing. "What do you mean you won’t take money from home? Where are you getting your funds from? You’re not planning something sneaky, are you?"
Rao Jie looked up at Huang Xiang with confusion, unsure of what she meant by 'planning something.'
Rao Gang quickly asked, "I’ve heard that these vocational schools don’t actually charge much tuition. Rao Jie, do you think you can handle it on your own?"
Rao Jie thought for a moment and said, "Regardless, I won’t take a single cent from home. I’ll manage my own tuition. I just wanted to inform you of my plans; I’ll be studying and working out of town."
Rao Gang couldn’t help but say, "Jie Jie, have you really thought this through? This isn’t a trivial matter; it’s not something to take lightly. You’ve worked hard to get into graduate school. Are you really going to give that up?"
Rao Jie looked at her father and nodded firmly.
Although Rao Gang continued to nag for several days and Huang Xiang scolded her relentlessly, Rao Jie stood her ground. Eventually, they had no choice but to relent. Huang Xiang was the quickest to compromise since she confirmed multiple times that Rao Jie wouldn’t be taking money from them; thus, she decided not to interfere further.
Wu Rong had already helped Rao Jie consult with West Point Academy in London, which aligned perfectly with her graduation timeline.
Wu Rong expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation, but Rao Jie felt elated as everything seemed to be progressing smoothly.
Moreover, Rao Jie noticed that her mother had been treating her quite well lately, allowing her to feel a hint of maternal love. Although her father's attitude remained largely unchanged from before, he seemed more attentive now—occasionally checking in on her and Wu Rong's situation and asking about her plans after graduation.
Rao Jie preferred to wait until everything settled down before telling her parents about going abroad, wanting to avoid their nagging at that time.
One day, Huang Xiang suddenly asked for Rao Jie's ID card. Although Rao Jie didn’t think much of it at first, she casually asked, "What do you need my ID for?"
