Huang Xiang spoke stiffly, "We need to register some things back home for future benefits, so I have to send our family's ID cards and Household Registration Book over."
Rao Jie asked, "Do you need me to run an errand?"
Huang Xiang immediately replied, "No need, you all focus on your work. I'm the one with free time; I'll handle it."
It was rare for her mother to consider her needs like this. Since she had been busy with her thesis defense recently, she didn’t press the issue further.
The next day, her ID card was returned to her.
Naturally, Rao Jie didn’t dwell on the matter. She felt that her interactions with her family had become more harmonious since then, especially Huang Xiang’s attitude towards her had improved.
However, recently, Rao Jian had been coming home less frequently. Rao Jie hardly saw him and was unsure what he was busy with. She wondered if he was still working under Young Master Hu. Since their parents hadn’t mentioned it, she didn’t bother to ask.
One evening, Rao Jian unexpectedly brought members of the Hu Family over for dinner.
Rao Jie’s first reaction was to think she had been tricked again. Anger flushed her face pale as she avoided looking at anyone from the Hu Family and planned to make an excuse to leave.
But the Hu couple greeted Rao Jie warmly, expressing their regret that she already had a boyfriend, remarking how wonderful it would be if such a good girl married into their family!
Rao Jie was momentarily taken aback. After a while, she realized that the Hu Family was simply there for a casual gathering among old friends; the matchmaking business had been put behind them, and neither family brought it up again.
Finally feeling relieved, Rao Jie’s inner resistance began to fade. However, Hu Ze’s gaze still sent chills down her spine.
She tried to avoid his eyes but constantly felt his stare lingering on her, a sensation she found deeply uncomfortable.
After dinner, Rao Jie quickly stood up to pretend to help clear the dishes, encouraging Huang Xiang to stay in the living room and chat with everyone.
Huang Xiang felt proud of her daughter’s obedient behavior, while the Hu couple lamented losing such a good girl. They didn’t have any lofty aspirations; they simply thought their son was a bit aimless and didn’t want outsiders to know. If he could marry a well-mannered, sensible girl with a good education and background, that would be ideal.
Unfortunately, it seemed that Rao Jie and Hu Ze didn’t click at all. The Hu couple held fairly normal views; they didn’t want to force anyone into a relationship. Although they felt it was a pity, they wouldn’t push for a marriage alliance.
However, previously the Rao Family had confidently claimed that marriage was possible and that things were going well enough for an engagement, which gave the Hu Family some hope. When they later said it wasn’t feasible, it left the Hu Family feeling somewhat displeased; they hadn’t intended to restore close ties so quickly.
Yet for some reason, their son suddenly arranged this dinner gathering at their home again.
Although the Hu couple felt slightly uncomfortable about it internally, they maintained a pleasant demeanor on the surface.
Rao Jie wanted to avoid spending too much time with them and slipped into the kitchen, planning to wash up and then quietly return to her room.
As she finished washing the dishes and began tidying up other items, her phone vibrated. Taking it out, she saw it was indeed Wu Rong calling.
Wu Rong was pulled into a dinner gathering by Ye Ming and the others tonight, which was why he didn’t bother Rao Jie for dinner.
Having just finished eating, he sent a message to Rao Jie to check on her.
Rao Jie had heard from Wu Xin that Wu Rong wasn’t fond of texting; if he had something to say, he would call directly or use video chat. He would never waste time on messages.
