“Uh…”
Yang Yulan's face showed a hint of difficulty. The pleasure that Li Qiang had given her was something she had never experienced with her husband. That deep, penetrating comfort was unlike anything she had felt before. Moreover, she hadn’t been intimate with her husband for years; one could say that Li Qiang was her second man after all this time. People often said that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but after so many years, how new could this marriage feel?
If it were any other man, Yang Yulan would have borrowed his seed and cut off all contact. However, Li Qiang was simply too enticing. The sensation he provided was more intoxicating than the aroma of any opium poppy concoction; she knew she would never be able to forget it in her lifetime.
But what about her husband? Although he hadn’t fulfilled his responsibilities as a husband for many years, he had always cared for her like an older brother. He had never let her feel abandoned, especially when she had left home in anger and found herself here, alone and helpless. It was all thanks to her husband.
She couldn’t forget where she came from.
“Qiang Zi, in the future, we…”
“ Director Yang? Director Yang? Are you there?”
Just as Yang Yulan was about to refuse Li Qiang and sever their connection, someone in the yard called her name before she could finish her sentence.
This startled both Li Qiang and Yang Yulan.
“Aunt, what do we do now?” Li Qiang was genuinely taken aback. If someone saw him with Aunt Yulan doing such things, he would only face a reprimand from Aunt Yu Feng. But Yang Yulan’s good reputation in the village would be ruined.
Yang Yulan, being someone who had seen much of the world, merely flinched slightly at the sound before regaining her composure. Calmly, she said, “Qiang Zi, don’t panic. Let’s get dressed first. I’ll handle this; you just go with the flow.”
Yang Yulan’s calmness reassured Li Qiang, and he couldn’t help but admire her as he nodded in agreement.
Summer was already a time for lighter clothing, and the two quickly put on their previously disheveled outfits.
"Hey, I'm right here! Who's that?" Yang Yulan cleared her throat and responded.
"Oh, Director Yang, what brings you into the kitchen on such a hot day?" The newcomer was Wang Xiaohu, who had contracted the village's fish pond. He usually raised crabs, shrimp, and fish, making quite a profit. He was one of the wealthier families in the village.
However, Li Qiang had heard that this guy had a weakness for women and often visited the bathhouses in the county town, not just for a wash but to find a girl for a "full massage."
Wang Xiaohu had a face full of excess flesh, with small eyes that sparkled with cunning. Notably, he had a prominent black mole slightly off-center on his chin. At that moment, he was squinting at Yang Yulan's chest and thighs with ill intent.
Seeing it was Wang Xiaohu, Yang Yulan immediately lost her pleasant demeanor but didn’t show too much displeasure. She said sternly, "Wang Xiaohu, do you need something?"
Wang Xiaohu seemed accustomed to Yang Yulan's indifference. He chuckled and replied, "Can't I come to check on you if there's nothing else?"
"Speak if you have something to say; if not, don’t cause a ruckus in the village committee yard," Yang Yulan's expression turned serious. This woman had an air of authority that could be quite intimidating.
Noticing Yang Yulan's sternness, Wang Xiaohu felt a bit intimidated and quickly put on a smile. "Director Yang, please don’t be like that. I just wanted to ask if you could say something nice about me to the Secretary."
"What good words can I say for you?" Yang Yulan asked, puzzled. Wang Xiaohu usually showered benefits on Ge Tianbao and Zhu Jiarong, the village leaders. During holidays and festivals, he never failed to provide them with fish products. What could possibly require her to speak well of him?
Wang Xiaohu was sharp enough to catch on to Yang Yulan's confusion. He grinned and explained, "Director Yang, you know there’s a new Commissioner in the village? Everyone is being mobilized to plant crops in the fields. But my fish pond can’t just be left idle! Isn’t what I have there also a kind of crop?"
"You should talk directly to the Secretary about this. It won’t do any good for me to say anything," Yang Yulan replied curtly.
"Ah, Director, didn't I just say that? But the Secretary said it was useless; his words don't count," Wang Xiaohu cried, his face full of grievance. He had contracted this fish pond and could make a good profit every year. If he couldn't keep the contract, he would lose his means of making a living, which would be a huge loss.
"The Secretary's words don't count, and mine count even less," Yang Yulan waved her hand, a hint of impatience in her voice. "Wang Xiaohu, if you have nothing to do, don't come looking for me. I can't help you."
Seeing Yang Yulan's intention to dismiss him, Wang Xiaohu was nearly in tears. He hurriedly said, "No, Director Yang, please! You can help me; you absolutely can!" Yang Yulan found his pitiful demeanor somewhat touching and allowed him to continue. "Director Yang, regarding this matter, it actually involves that Commissioner..."
After a lengthy explanation from Wang Xiaohu, the situation was finally made clear.
Yang Yulan couldn't help but chuckle lightly. "Wang Xiaohu, you're really desperate! Although I'm a woman, I have no connection with that Commissioner at all. You might as well seek someone more capable. I'm not helping!"
Yang Yulan made a dismissive gesture. Wang Xiaohu looked at her resolute expression and realized she was adamant about her decision. With a heavy sigh, he left in frustration.
Li Qiang, who had been eavesdropping in the kitchen, heard their entire conversation clearly. He actually envied Wang Xiaohu; this guy knew how to make money, and with money came women—impressive.
Thus, Li Qiang felt no disdain for Wang Xiaohu going into town to find women; instead, he admired him. To be able to attract women in the county town took considerable skill.
Now that Li Qiang understood the benefits of money, he was determined to earn some himself. Hearing about Wang Xiaohu's troubles brought him unexpected joy. The orders from Ge Tianbao and Zhu Jiarong were meant to please Qin Su Yan but had truly made life difficult for people like Wang Xiaohu who relied on alternative means to make money in the village.
Having learned about Wang Xiaohu's predicament sparked a bold idea in Li Qiang's mind.
"Aunt, eat more of that watermelon! Also, think about what I just mentioned. I have something else to attend to; I'm leaving now." Li Qiang emerged from the kitchen and quickly headed toward the village committee courtyard.
