When Rao Jie woke up, she was momentarily disoriented before realizing what had happened. A wave of terror washed over her, and she felt an overwhelming urge to cry out. Just then, a voice seemed to pierce through the suffocating darkness that surrounded her.
"Rao Jie, are you awake? How are you feeling? Is there anywhere that hurts?"
The silent scream in Rao Jie’s heart immediately ceased. She turned her head slightly and saw a familiar face that brought her comfort, filled with tender concern. Someone was holding her hand tightly.
However, his arm was wrapped in bandages, faintly stained with red.
Slowly, Rao Jie pulled her hand away from his grasp and reached up to touch Wu Rong's arm. Her voice was hoarse as she asked, "Wu Rong?"
Wu Rong's worried expression relaxed a bit. "Yes."
"You’re hurt?" Rao Jie asked slowly.
Wu Rong paused for a moment before smiling. "It's only natural for a hero to get hurt while saving a damsel in distress."
Rao Jie blinked, and tears began to fall.
"I..."
Wu Rong chuckled softly. "Don’t you remember? It’s okay; I called the police, and they arrived just in time. That scoundrel didn’t get away with anything."
Rao Jie felt a bit fuzzy about that part of her memory, but hearing Wu Rong say this finally made her smile through her tears as she asked incredulously, "Really? Is that true?"
Wu Rong raised an eyebrow. "If it weren’t true, I would have already beaten that scoundrel to a pulp. Right now, I’d probably be in jail."
As she listened to him, the initial surprise turned into overwhelming emotion, and she couldn't help but sob again. Wu Rong reached out and pulled Rao Jie into his embrace. "It’s okay now; it’s okay. From now on, we won’t be apart again. You will never have to face such things again."
Rao Jie nodded while crying.
After venting her emotions for a while, Rao Jie finally calmed down. Wu Rong gently explained to her that her body was fine now and that his wound had also been treated; he could be discharged at any time. During their conversation, Wu Rong's phone rang incessantly until he finally answered it after comforting Rao Jie.
It was Zhan Ruoyang calling to ask whether they should go over or send the police to inquire since members of the Hu Family had already arrived.
Although the Hu Family had used their connections, with Zhan Ruoyang applying pressure, Hu Ze still couldn’t get out.
With the medication found in the cup and the complete video from Hu Ze's own phone, they could essentially convict him.
However, Hu Ze argued that he had been drunk and hadn’t acted intentionally, claiming that he hadn’t placed the drugs there at all. As a result, Rao Jie was implicated in the situation.
However, the video recording on Hu Ze's phone undermined his drunken claims, leading to both him and Rao Jian being detained. Initially, Rao Gang was determined to hold Hu Ze accountable, and while Huang Xiang remained silent, he did not oppose the idea. It wasn't until Rao Jian became involved that the Rao family fell silent.
The Rao family and the Hu family quickly sought a way to resolve the issue. Naturally, they wanted to settle it privately, but the person who reported it was Wu Rong, and the victim was Rao Jie; it wasn't something that could simply be resolved between the two families. Both families wanted to locate them, but the police refused to disclose Wu Rong's whereabouts, making it impossible for them to negotiate privately. They could only wait at the police station.
Zhan Ruoyang inquired about Wu Rong's plans. Wu Rong replied that he would take Rao Jie over shortly but first asked Zhan Ruoyang to send someone to handle a matter for the Rao family. Rao Jie listened in confusion, still engulfed in anxiety. When she heard Wu Rong request their house keys, she looked at him quizzically. "Are we going to my house first?"
Wu Rong put away his phone and looked at Rao Jie seriously. "Your older brother colluded with that scoundrel against you. Your family wants to protect those two now that they are at the police station. Since no one is home right now, we need to get your Household Registration Book and ID, then head to the civil affairs bureau before going to the police station."
