As soon as Su Ruolan returned to Yangcheng for winter break in her sophomore year, she wanted to find a temporary job to earn some tuition money. Since her older brother, Su Ruofeng, had moved out with his wife shortly after their wedding, the house felt a bit empty.
After much effort, Su Ruolan finally came home for the holidays, but her parents were reluctant to let her work too far away. Fortunately, her father's friend, Uncle Wang, had just opened a KTV and offered her a position at the front desk, allowing her to work close to home.
In the 1990s, KTV was undoubtedly a trendy new industry. On her first day, Uncle Wang took Su Ruolan to the store and introduced her to the manager. "This is Ms.Dai; this is Su Ruolan. Ms.Dai handles everything for the company, so you should learn from her."
"Yes!" Su Ruolan replied eagerly.
"Just call me Ms.Dai," Ms.Dai said with a smile.
Thus, Su Ruolan began working there for the winter. She had a fixed schedule from ten in the morning until eight in the evening, with another accountant coming in to take over at night.
In this KTV, the floor manager was a rather mischievous young man named Fang Zhiping, who was around twenty-five or twenty-six years old. His younger brother, Zhi Min, was still in vocational school and also came to work during the winter break. Zhi Min didn’t seem very serious either; the two brothers enjoyed flirting with girls around the store, which was filled with young women who seemed to welcome their antics. However, Su Ruolan disliked their carefree attitude and remained stern with them. After a few encounters where they were met with her disapproval, they learned not to bother her anymore.
On the other hand, Zhi Min’s classmate Wang Wei Bei was quite different. He was honest and well-behaved, which ironically made him less appealing to girls compared to the brothers.
As two weeks passed, Su Ruolan noticed that Wei Bei would often come over to chat with her or ask trivial questions. She had heard rumors from other waitstaff that Wei Bei liked her but always brushed it off with a smile. Whenever he approached her again, she pretended not to notice; after all, she was a few years older than them and much more mature in handling such situations.
During the Spring Festival days, business at the KTV was booming. In addition to her daytime shifts, Su Ruolan also helped out in the evenings. Zhiping intentionally scheduled her and Wei Bei to work in the same area to create opportunities for him. He advised Wei Bei with some sage advice: "A strong woman fears persistence," encouraging him to pursue her relentlessly—after all, even Yang Guo called Xiaolongnu 'Auntie.'
Despite becoming more familiar with each other over several nights of work, Wei Bei still made no significant progress with Su Ruolan. After each shift ended, she would have Zhang Xinyi pick her up, leading Wei Bei to mistakenly believe that Zhang Xinyi was her boyfriend, leaving him feeling both disappointed and envious.
In reality, Zhang Xinyi was just a classmate who lived nearby. Su Ruolan's actual boyfriend was Chen Hui, who lived in Ning Cheng. She had met Chen Hui while attending university there and was captivated by his good looks and bravery. Chen Hui was equally smitten by Su Ruolan's beauty; thus, they became an official couple.
Once the New Year festivities were over, Su Ruolan mentioned to Ms.Dai that she wanted to resign because Chen Hui wanted her to come back early to Ning Cheng—his mother had been nagging about when she would arrive.
Upon hearing that Su Ruolan was leaving, Wei Bei felt utterly dejected. On Su Ruolan's last day of work around seven in the evening, the night shift accountant arrived early for handover. Su Ruolan went to bid farewell to Ms.Dai, who expressed gratitude and encouragement while insisting that she must come back during summer vacation. Su Ruolan promised and said goodbye before exiting the office.
