Bitter Struggle
Ran Xing and Shao Meng were both pushed back, standing back to back in front of two evil spirits.
"Damn, how could they suddenly become so strong," Shao Meng was surprised at the speed of the evil spirit's transformation, being able to quickly change to a fighting style they had never used before.
The evil spirit sneered, "With just this little ability, do you still think you can accomplish anything? With just this little skill, how can you save your sister?"
Saying this, the evil spirit unexpectedly underwent a transformation. Ran Xing was shocked: another self with purple light in its eyes, devilishly smiled at him. "I think you'd better stay here and accompany your sister to enjoy some happy days below."
With just one sentence, Ran Xing immediately clenched his fists, wanting to rush up for a decisive battle.
"What did you say? What did you do to my sister!?" Ran Xing tried to calm his anger as much as possible, but Shao Meng couldn't resist Ran Xing's brute force and was thrown off. Ran Xing took the opportunity to launch a fierce attack, carrying a strong wind straight towards the fake self in front of him. It was evil spirit transformed by Ran Xing's evil thoughts, and as long as Ran Xing's anger remained, evil spirit would exist forever.
"Before your friend dies, you should turn around and look at what's in front of you, Shao Meng!" Another evil spirit also underwent a transformation, turning into another self with purple light in its eyes.
"At that time, you were really incompetent, useless! You only regained the chance in the Trial grounds by using someone else's life. Now, how can you be so tormented by an evil spirit that is not even a match for the Four Phases? Are you living up to the training of your father and uncles?" Without giving Shao Meng any chance, evil spirit switched from a spear to a fist, advancing forward. With one hand up and one down, the front hand feigned a straight punch, which was indeed caught by Shao Meng. Seizing the opportunity, Shao Meng leaned back and immediately pressed down with his right hand, suppressing the evil spirit. Following closely, a punch was thrown like a long spear, and the force of the punch blew over his hair, leaving Shao Meng quite surprised.
For some reason, Ran Xing shed a few tears from the corner of his eyes. In the instant they fell, he sensed the attack from evil spirit, as if two iron fists were tearing through the air. The impact made his legs tremble, and his body involuntarily took a few steps back.
"Great force!" Ran Xing's words puzzled evil spirit. Shao Meng glanced over during the fight and was also quite shocked: when did this kid learn the Moon Pursuit from the teacher?
Ran Xing relies on the super-fast speed of the month, seemingly surpassing the tears falling from a height of five and a half feet. The first punch lands behind another self, knocking the other self to the ground with a single blow. Unexpectedly, this turns out to be a false self of the other, while the True form flashes behind the self, delivering the same punch, which is blocked by the self's arms. Ran Xing seizes the opportunity to counterattack, successfully knocking down the other self once again.
"I've told you before, I am indestructible. I rely on your malice, your regret, and self-blame. Even if you use up all your vitality, you cannot defeat me," the other self says, showing signs of injury but still standing with a mocking smile. The vitality in both hands seems to have increased by a level.
"You talk too much. Let's settle this first!" Ran Xing seems to be even more furious, losing some of his composure in his attacks, blindly pursuing the suppression with his punches, failing to notice that evil spirit has hardly retaliated.
"Hasn't your master taught you not to be distracted during a fight?" Shao Meng sneers, but in that instant, "himself" strikes back and pushes Shao Meng back several meters.
The consecutive attacks from the two "selves" make it difficult for the two to hold on, and they are defeated once again. Coincidentally, the two find themselves back to back, seemingly communicating something with their eyes in an instant.
After a strong explosion and flash, the two "selves" realize that Ran Xing and Shao Meng are no longer in sight. Just as they are puzzled, the two switch positions and descend from the sky. As the saying goes, swift as the wind, gentle as the forest, fierce as fire, and immovable as the shadow. With Ran Xing's help, Shao Meng catches the blessing from the sky, concentrating the vitality in the lower body. Seizing the moment when the light disperses, Shao Meng overturns the false Ran Xing with a kick, while Ran Xing takes advantage of the situation to burst out with vitality and charge directly at the false Shao Meng. In reality, his True form had already moved behind the false Shao Meng, and with the water Fire element counter, he breaks the illusion created by the two evil spirit, returning to reality.
The two felt a darkness before their eyes and were about to collapse. Fortunately, Ran Xing leaned against a rock, preventing them from falling. The two took a deep breath and used the prearranged vitality symbol to signal the distant Yu Long.
Survivors
Five years ago, a reconnaissance team was formed at the Trial Grounds, tasked with patrolling the area around Soul Break Cliff. Now, apart from Yu Long, who was treating Yi Shan, all members of this team of over ten had perished here.
The treatment was progressing smoothly, and Yi Shan soon regained consciousness. He instinctively covered his back, as if hiding something that had not been revealed.
"You’re awake," Yu Long said as he retracted the healing formation. He instructed Luo Yue and the others to take out the rations prepared at the Trial Grounds. Upon seeing his own people, Yi Shan relaxed his guard.
"I finally waited for you... I... I really..." Yi Shan began to tear up as he recalled how his team members had desperately protected him during their escape. He also remembered some unfortunate members who had become subjects for experiments, tragically dying in this valley filled with bones and blood. This left him with a heavy burden in his heart.
"What discoveries did you make?" After understanding the situation of the team, Yu Long began to inquire about their investigations.
Ran Xing and Luo Yue listened attentively while Shao Meng sat aside, holding a steaming bun but unable to eat it.
"What's wrong with you?" Luo Yue noticed that Shao Meng seemed to have something difficult to say.
"Nothing. By the way, did Teacher Yu Long find out any news?" Shao Meng suddenly took a big bite of his bun, as if suppressing something on the tip of his tongue or perhaps an emotion, trying his best to lower his head so Luo Yue wouldn’t see.
Seeing Luo Yue shake his head, Shao Meng helplessly nodded and swallowed the bun in one go, preparing to lie down quietly for a moment.
"Look at this person; he’s really strange," Ran Xing pulled Luo Yue back and whispered about what had happened during the recent battle: Shao Meng's uncle Long Shan was very likely still alive.
Luo Yue was shocked. "How is that possible? This person has been listed in the memorial register at the Trial Grounds for a long time. How could he still be here?"
"Keep your voice down!" Ran Xing gestured to Luo Yue not to let Shao Meng hear. "I can't be sure, because during the battle, that evil spirit took on his appearance and mysteriously said, 'My master has been waiting for you for a long time,' or 'Think about it, does your current state do justice to your master and uncles?' I only heard a fragment at the time. If the evil spirit was telling the truth, it could make our problems much more complicated."
As Ran Xing explained, he handed the hot buns to Luo Yue.
"Thank you," the two's eyes inadvertently met, and the sensitivity of the young men quickly made them avoid the brief encounter. However, they sat back to back in unspoken agreement, both wanting to continue the conversation but a strange emotion stopped them from speaking, like choking on food. At this moment, the two were sitting back to back, listening to the information Teacher Yu Long was asking for.
A cup of tea, a conversation.
Long Shan sat on the stone table in the laboratory, seemingly dazed. Since the knight arrived in the valley, such anomalies seemed to be discovered by Liu Hen every now and then. Long Shan, a member of the illusion-breaking team and Shao Meng's uncle, had been surrounded during a mission many years ago. As they retreated towards the Trial grounds seeking support, they gradually approached the vicinity of the Trial grounds. Unexpectedly, three members of Eight Desolates intercepted them. In order to protect the last hope of the team, illusion-breaking and Long Shan worked together to send Shao Meng inside the barrier and held off the pursuers. Illusion-breaking eventually exhausted his vitality and died, while Long Shan blacked out and when he opened his eyes again, he was the superior of Liu Hen and in charge of this experimental site.
"Sir, Shang Qing is waiting for you outside," Liu Hen walked into the room at a leisurely pace.
"This is quite a rare visit. He actually came to find me directly," Long Shan wiped away his tears, seeming somewhat inappropriate for Shang Qing to arrive at this time. The spontaneous Fire ignited here, while Long Shan remained seated. It seemed that during the recent battle, Long Shan had sensed a familiar feeling from Shao Meng, or perhaps the current Long Shan as the evil spirit had been possessed by another Long Shan, causing him to fail to kill the two assassins of the Four Valiant Constables.
"So many years have passed, Shao Meng, and we never thought we would meet in this way. It's really ridiculous. How could you possibly believe that I am 'Long Shan?'" Long Shan said to himself, but soon his eyes faintly flickered with a purple light, and his face became serious again. Shang Qing, who had been waiting for a while without seeing any help from Liu Hen, was somewhat dissatisfied, so he simply activated his vitality slightly, breaking Long Shan's barrier. The airflow surprised Long Shan, but the tea leaves had already been spilled, and he couldn't afford to lose face in front of the guest.
"They all say that in the art of tea, you, Long Shan, are the most skilled at Eight Desolates. This statement is indeed accurate," Shang Qing said politely as he found a place to sit on his own.
On the side, Liu Hen looked at this person who spoke so arrogantly to the elder, his hands swirling with power, ready to act.
"I believe that today, you and I are witnesses to each other. When I treat guests, I always use the best tea and repeatedly make the best tea. Only then can I live up to the occasion, just like the cup today. Brother Shang Qing, you must try it," Long Shan signaled to the other Liu Hen, which made them calm down slightly.
"Yes, the fragrance of tea lingers, and genuine feelings towards others will lead to better cooperation. I wonder what insight you have for me this time," Shang Qing asked after Liu Hen calmed down.
"You know, I love to do some research. Based on my recent research, I estimate that the results will be available in the next day or so, or perhaps a dozen hours. My six brothers here are all tied up and can only rely on you," Long Shan said politely, pouring the tea full, yet still able to lift the cup without spilling.
"I have personally recommended you to Lord Gui Mei. Otherwise, if I had to take action, I can't guarantee what I would leave behind for you, including your fellow disciples and his students," Long Shan continued to smile insincerely, then drank his tea on his own.
Shang Qing suddenly smiled in relief, "Where are these words from? I am who I am. What brothers, fellow disciples, this has nothing to do with the current Shang Qing. If you trust me, then hand these things over to me. I can handle them on my own, it's not a problem."
Long Shan nodded in satisfaction at the loyalty of this outsider to Eight Desolates. He then ordered Liu Hen to step back, leaving only a few scattered around him, and said, "Alright, Brother Shang Qing, my men are waiting outside the door. If you need them, take one or two with you. Consider it my help to you, how about that?"
Shang Qing sneered, expressing loudly that he was capable enough to deal with them. He then bid farewell to Long Shan and leisurely headed off in an unknown direction.
