The year the Kloi War broke out, Tao Yiran returned to his homeland.
After studying abroad for many years, he coincidentally arrived just as R Country had torn off its hypocritical facade and declared war on Z Country.
With many of his friends joining the resistance, Tao Yiran ultimately decided to participate as well.
Upon arriving in S City, he received his first mission.
“Comrade Tao Yiran, this is your new task. You need to arrange a suitable identity for Comrade Jiang Wenyu so she can stay in N City and assist her in completing a series of missions.”
After reading the secret note he received, Tao Yiran carefully examined each word before crumpling the corner of the paper and placing it into the nearby candle flame.
As he watched the paper burn, the flickering flames danced upward, casting shadows that obscured his youthful and handsome face in the dim light.
The next day, a gunshot jolted Tao Yiran awake.
He quickly threw on some clothes and quietly opened the door to check on the commotion outside.
Suddenly, a bloodied hand reached through the doorway, startling him into taking a step back.
A girl squeezed through the door with urgency etched across her bright face. “Can you help me? Please!”
Tao Yiran replied, “You are one of Firewalker’s people.”
Firewalker was the name given to the underground organization that most young people had joined to resist R Country.
It was not a question but a statement of certainty.
Upon hearing Tao Yiran's words, the girl's face began to show signs of anxiety, feeling somewhat at a loss. Would he report her?
Despite her troubled expression, her eyes resembled a pair of autumn waters gazing at Tao Yiran.
Tao Yiran found her flustered demeanor somewhat amusing.
Was her expression really that obvious?
At that moment, unbeknownst to Tao Yiran, the girl’s fingers quietly began to gather green light behind her.
“Help! Someone come quickly! General Ito is dead!!!”
“Where did he go?”
“This way, this way! I saw a figure heading that direction!”
Hearing the commotion in the hallway, Tao Yiran quickly pulled the girl inside and shut the door.
The girl's actions were interrupted, and she looked at Tao Yiran in confusion.
Her hands continued to gather energy behind her.
Tao Yiran glanced up and down at the girl, noticing that the bloodstains on her clothes didn’t seem to be hers. He then spoke up, “I’m in the same situation.”
After hearing this, the girl paused for a moment before her panic vanished completely. The small movements behind her also ceased as she smiled and said, “That’s great, comrade. I really appreciate your help.”
Tao Yiran smiled back, “It’s no trouble at all.”
Suddenly, a voice came from outside the door, "Master Tao, are you awake? Can you please open the door?"
Before Tao Yiran could respond, the girl beside him heard the voice and immediately turned to the window, opening it before leaping down.
"Hey, this is the third floor!"
Tao Yiran lowered his voice and then widened his eyes in shock. By the time he realized what had happened, he found himself leaning on the windowsill.
He watched as the girl landed safely and waved at him. A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth as he waved back in acknowledgment.
Fortunately, this was a back street, and it was still early morning; not many people were awake to notice what was happening.
"Master Tao, are you awake? Can you open the door?"
"Master Tao! Master Tao!"
Listening to the increasingly loud knocking outside, Tao Yiran turned away from watching the girl leave. He tugged at his collar and feigned a sleepy expression as he staggered to the door.
"What is it? It's early in the morning; can't I get some sleep?"
The bellboy bowed apologetically. "I'm sorry, Master Tao, but there's been an incident here. We need to check everyone's rooms."
As soon as the bellboy finished speaking, he was violently shoved aside by R Country, who fell to the ground.
With a fierce look in his eyes, R Country pressed a gun against Tao Yiran's chest and spoke in broken Z Country language, "Step aside. We need to search this place."
After saying that, several members of R Country barged past Tao Yiran and rushed inside, turning the room upside down. It quickly became a chaotic mess.
Soon, the few people who had searched without results stood before the leader of R Country, their heads bowed as they reported, "Sir, there is nothing here."
The officer from R Country nodded coldly, signaling for them to withdraw. However, as he turned, he noticed the open window.
Quickly, he drew his rifle and pointed it at Tao Yiran's head, sternly asking, "What’s going on with that window?"
Tao Yiran glanced at it and casually replied, "I have a habit of opening the window for fresh air right after waking up. Is that not allowed?"
Upon hearing Tao Yiran speak in R Country's language, the officer was momentarily taken aback. "You are from R Country?"
"No, I am not. I just returned from studying in R Country," she clarified.
At this revelation, the officer's demeanor shifted instantly. He lowered his weapon and displayed a friendly attitude toward this student who appreciated his country's culture.
"Very well. I hope you will become a friend of R Country," he said. Tao Yiran smirked slightly at his words, while the officer left with his men.
Watching the soldiers outside continue their search and knock on doors, Tao Yiran expressionlessly closed the door behind her.
As the door clicked shut, she seemed to remember something and suddenly looked up at the doorframe, only to find that the bloodstains had been cleaned away without her noticing.
Tao Yiran smiled; what a bold and meticulous girl she was.
