Jiang Ming looked at him with a strange expression, genuinely surprised that the man in front of him was only 19 years old. His face indeed appeared a bit too youthful, not resembling someone who had been battered by life for a long time.

Yan Qing picked up his chopsticks and grabbed some noodles. "Don’t worry. At your young age, you’re already eating government rations; you’re practically an old hand now. Even if you don’t graduate, our institute will take care of you. Just focus on your meal!"
Drui Feng beamed and began to devour the noodles and meat in his bowl with gusto.
Yan Qing watched him, noting how he resembled a mischievous child, and chuckled softly before lowering his head to chew on some noodles himself.
It was then that Yan Qing noticed Jiang Ming was still watching him.
Jiang Ming's gaze drifted over to Drui Feng, and Yan Qing understood his intent.
Taking a sip of water, Yan Qing smiled and said, " Drui Feng is our teammate. According to the requirements for the four-person team competition, we still need to find one more teammate. We can also opt for random matching if no one wants to team up with us."
Jiang Ming frowned slightly, his voice low as he asked, "I know that... I just wanted to ask—how well do you know Drui Feng? Did you meet him when he was 17?"
"Uh... of course I know him," Yan Qing replied. "He’s an Ability User; you heard that right. A couple of years ago during a mission in the Northwest, I discovered him helping some illegal elements with their operations. But..."
Yan Qing paused, and Drui Feng looked up at him with a grin.
"He voluntarily came to me to defect; the higher-ups agreed to let him redeem himself through merit. In the end, he joined our institute and became my colleague. It’s not really a secret; everyone here knows about it."
Jiang Ming nodded with a half-smile, "Oh, so he redeemed himself. I thought our institute would recruit any Ability User regardless of age."
At this remark, both Yan Qing and Drui Feng laughed, especially Drui Feng, who nearly choked on his noodles.
Drui Feng chuckled so hard he almost lost his breath and gave Jiang Ming a thumbs-up. "Brother, I appreciate you! I always thought I was the only one thinking like this; it seems now that you're here, I'm not alone anymore."
Yan Qing sighed and exchanged glances with Jiang Ming before saying earnestly, "See? Kids grow up with rebellious thoughts; even those who feed them can end up being ridiculed."
“Hmm?”
Jiang Ming smiled as he and Yan Qing remained silent, focusing on their meal and ignoring whatever Drui Feng had to say.
“Hey, what are you talking about? I'm 19, not a kid! Look, I'm taller than you!” Drui Feng suddenly stood up beside Yan Qing. Yan Qing rolled his eyes while Jiang Ming chuckled without saying a word.
After finishing their meal, the three of them returned to the research institute together.
Yan Qing had previously worked with Drui Feng on a mission, and their cooperation was fairly smooth. However, Jiang Ming had never fought alongside them before. This time, the A Rank exam would only select ten candidates for advancement. They said they needed to secure at least two spots, which were Lin Ran's exact words.

In team matches, participants could form their own teams or randomly select teammates upon entering the arena. This was to accommodate small groups with fewer than four members in certain regions.

Drui Feng's loud voice made both Jiang Ming and Yan Qing turn their heads simultaneously to look at him. He was at their side, sitting at his computer with his phone in hand, openly playing games instead of focusing on their preparations. They both shook their heads in disbelief.
“Do you think we need to find another teammate in advance?” Yan Qing suddenly turned her head, popping it out from the side of the computer.
Jiang Ming's eyes widened slightly as he paused before saying, “If we think the randomly assigned teammates at the exam are unreliable, then we can find someone else at the research institute. That should be more dependable, right?”
Yan Qing nodded. “I would like that, but there are only a few A Rank members at the institute. Generally, they are always on missions, and there aren’t many A Ranks in our coastal city. It’s probably difficult to find a fourth A-Class Esper.”
After a moment of silence, Jiang Ming suggested, “How about I bring someone from my hometown?”
Yan Qing chuckled. “I appreciate your good intentions, but someone of your level as an Ability User can’t directly participate in the A Rank exam. They need to progress from C Level gradually.”
“Why is that?” Jiang Ming asked.
“Only B Level team members with biological information records at the Global Research Institute headquarters or branches, or B Level and above Ability Users who have never participated in an A Rank exam, can take this exam. It’s all for fairness.”
Jiang Ming stroked his chin thoughtfully. “So what you’re saying is that if we find a B Level or higher Ability User with a record, they can participate in the exam?”
“Yes, that’s stated in the exam requirements and doesn’t violate any rules.”
