The timing of returning home was just right, as the delivery person knocked on the door.
"Hello, is this Heavenly Black Mountain? Your delivery has arrived."
With a clatter, Jiang Ming had already been sitting on the sofa waiting. He opened the door and reached out to take the food.
"Thank you!"
"You're welcome, you're welcome. Please give a five-star review."
Jiang Ming placed the takeout on the dining table and began to open the containers one by one.
When Yan Qing saw the dishes he had ordered, he couldn't help but be taken aback. Despite saying he would eat less, he had ordered seven or eight dishes.
Yan Qing held his chopsticks in hand and, under Jiang Ming's anxious gaze, reached out to pick up a few bites of food, chewing and swallowing them.
"What are you staring at me for? Why aren't you eating? Aren't you hungry?"
Yan Qing's voice was flat and cold, as if he were speaking to a stranger.
"Hungry, of course I'm hungry."
Jiang Ming replied with a smile, then picked up his chopsticks and eagerly dug into the food that Yan Qing had just taken. He chewed a few mouthfuls with a grin on his face.
His eyes were filled with satisfaction and happiness, as if in that moment he possessed the entire world.
Yan Qing looked at his expression, a wave of helplessness and confusion rising within him.
He picked up a piece of Lotus Root, its crisp and refreshing texture glistening under the light, much like the atmosphere at that moment—seemingly calm yet hiding secrets beneath the surface.
He slowly placed the Lotus Root into his mouth, taking a gentle bite. His cheeks slightly puffed out before his gaze turned sharp as he fixed it on Jiang Ming. Coldly, he asked, “Are you still not going to tell the truth?”
Jiang Ming was enjoying his meal when he heard Yan Qing’s icy words, as if they had come from the polar regions. The rhythm of his chewing abruptly halted, as if someone had pressed the pause button. The relaxed smile that had been on his lips faded away like receding tidewaters, leaving no trace behind.
The chopsticks in his hand felt heavy as if they bore a thousand pounds; he slowly set them down and raised his head to meet Yan Qing’s piercing gaze.
“I’m sorry, I know. You must think I have a connection with Klick, and I don’t deny that,” Jiang Ming said, his voice low but each word resonating clearly in the air. “But believe me, I will still catch him after helping him escape. Letting him go was a strategy to catch bigger fish. Lin Ran can vouch for me; can you… trust me?”
Jiang Ming’s eyes were sincere and deep, holding an endless array of unspoken words. He stared intently at Yan Qing, a hint of pleading in his gaze.
Yan Qing felt an inexplicable flutter in his heart under Jiang Ming’s gaze. He instinctively set down his chopsticks and crossed his arms, leaning back against the chair. The chair creaked softly, its sound particularly clear in the quiet atmosphere.
“I’ve always been curious about how you came to the Z District’s laboratory. You arrived in Z District and immediately participated in the A-level Ability User exam. Honestly, aside from your double S-level Ability User status, I believe there are other things you’re hiding from us,” Yan Qing said, his eyes sharp as if trying to see through Jiang Ming.
As he spoke, Yan Qing stood up, his posture tall and athletic. He walked over to the water dispenser, picked up a cup, and filled it with clear water that swirled inside, refracting strange light.
Returning to the table, he brought the cup to his lips and took a gentle sip while never breaking eye contact with Jiang Ming. His gaze was as piercing as an eagle's eye.
"I have other identities, but I cannot tell you about them right now. Your Z District Commander knows about my identity; you can confront him about it. As for Lin Ran, I am not sure if he is aware of my other identity, but I do have a cooperation agreement with your Z District Commander," Jiang Ming said.
Jiang Ming looked at Yan Qing with a more sincere gaze, his innocent heart shining like the brightest star in the night sky, making it easy to see his honesty.
"At least believe me on this, Yan Qing; I have no intention of harming you," Jiang Ming's tone was earnest and resolute.
Yan Qing smiled slightly, setting down the cup in her hand. The cup made a crisp sound as it met the table.
"You certainly don't wish to harm me. With your double S-level Psychic Ability, you could easily kill any one of us here. Given your status, I really can't fathom what kind of interests our Z District Commander has that would lead someone like you to join our base," she replied.
Jiang Ming slowly lowered his head, the once bright light in his eyes now shrouded in shadow. "It's not really about interests; I came here voluntarily."
"Voluntarily?"
Yan Qing furrowed her brows, looking at him with confusion. "Z District isn't exactly a prosperous area of the country. You must have some important reason for coming here. And you just happened to choose to be my roommate? I can't believe that's just a coincidence. Can you tell me why, Comrade Jiang Ming?"
At this point, Jiang Ming rarely became tongue-tied. A hint of panic flashed in his eyes, like a lost deer in the forest.
He opened his mouth and then closed it again, looking somewhat dazed and unsure of how to begin.
"I... I... how should I put this? Just believe that I mean no harm. As for being your roommate... can you really not remember?"
A glimmer of moisture appeared in Jiang Ming's eyes, sparkling like tears that could fall at any moment.
Did Yan Qing misread him? Suddenly, she froze, an inexplicable emotion stirring within her heart.
Why did he say that? Did he know Jiang Ming before?
But how could he not remember? Moreover, with such a pitiful expression, it felt as if he had bullied him.
Yan Qing furrowed his brows slightly and coughed softly a couple of times, trying to ease the suffocating awkwardness in the air. He cleared his throat and once again focused his gaze on Jiang Ming, a hint of barely perceptible confusion in his eyes.
"Just tell me what's going on. Are we acquainted from before?" Yan Qing's voice was a bit hoarse, and in the quiet space, each word felt like a drumbeat echoing in his heart.
Jiang Ming's eyes sparkled with a brilliance akin to the Milky Way, gazing at Yan Qing with the loyalty of a devoted dog, filled with deep affection and anticipation.
His lips trembled slightly, as if suppressing an inner excitement.
"Do you really not remember me? Back in Dongjun, you saved me."
Jiang Ming's voice was choked with emotion.
"Dongjun?"
Yan Qing murmured softly, as if struck by the name of that place.
In an instant, memories that he had buried deep within himself, thinking they had long been sealed by time, surged back to the forefront of his mind like a tidal wave.
