Zhang Yuqing's father stood nearby, anxiously watching her with clenched fists and tightly pressed lips, his silence betraying the worry in his eyes.
Lu Xiaonuan's parents rushed to her side, pulling her close and urgently asking, "Xiaonuan, are you okay? As soon as I saw the news, I came right over. How could there be another explosion here? Should we transfer schools? It's just too unsafe."
Lu Xiaonuan's mother’s eyes were filled with terror, her voice trembling as she clutched Lu Xiaonuan tightly, as if afraid that any further harm might come to her.
With red-rimmed eyes, Lu Xiaonuan fought back tears and reassured her, "I'm fine, Mom. It's just that the Mountain God is back."
Though fear tinged her voice, she tried hard to appear strong.
"What? The Mountain God is back? What are the police doing? It’s been a month and they still haven’t caught this criminal!"
Lu Xiaonuan's mother began to rant angrily, her face flushed with rage. She glared at Yan Qing and Jiang Ming without concern for their feelings, her fury seeming ready to consume them.
Yan Qing exchanged an awkward glance with Lu Xiaonuan's mother. His lips trembled slightly, filled with guilt as he hurriedly explained, "I’m sorry, ma'am. The Explosion Incident happened so suddenly that the shockwave destroyed much of the evidence at the scene. The damage was extensive. Moreover, the surrounding surveillance equipment was severely affected; data was lost and footage damaged. This has made the investigation extremely difficult, which is why we haven’t been able to apprehend the culprit in a month. But I assure you, we will do everything we can to capture him quickly and restore a safe learning environment for the students of No. 13 Middle School."
His voice was sincere and resolute, beads of sweat forming on his forehead from tension and anxiety.
However, Lu Xiaonuan's mother scoffed dismissively. Her eyes were filled with disdain and anger as she placed her hands on her hips and shouted, "You police officers love to spout pretty words. What good are they if nothing comes of it? It’s been a month and you haven’t even caught a single lead! Is it really that hard to catch one person? With such a massive explosion and so much time passed, not a single useful clue? Is this how you justify your salaries?"
Her sharp voice echoed in the air, drawing the attention of those around them.
Jiang Ming frowned, unable to hold back any longer. He stepped forward quickly, placing a hand on Yan Qing's shoulder to hold him back. Anger flashed in his eyes as he retorted loudly, "You can’t say it like that! This criminal is extremely skilled; every time he commits a crime, he manages to evade capture cleverly and leaves almost no useful clues behind. Clearly, he’s a habitual offender. Given his motives and locations of attack, it’s very likely he’s retaliating against society. Both incidents occurred near No. 13 Middle School, so we have reason to suspect that the culprit may very well be a student from there."
Jiang Ming spoke rapidly, his tone firm, and his gaze unwavering as he looked at the crowd.
“Ha? Students?”
Zhang Yuqing's Father frowned deeply, his face filled with disapproval. “You are truly outrageous. Instead of properly searching for the criminals, you want to cast this stigma on the students? Is this how you conduct your investigations? You have no reasoning, no solid evidence, and yet you casually slander the students of Class 13.”
His face flushed with anger, and his body trembled slightly, clearly dissatisfied with Jiang Ming's words.
Jiang Ming let out a cold laugh, a hint of confidence in his eyes. “Who says we have no leads?”
“Then why don’t you tell us what these leads are? It’s been a month already, and you still haven’t shared any findings or suspects with us. Do you know what the students of Class 13 have been going through every day for the past month? As parents, we stay at home in constant fear, worried that something might happen to them at school.”
Lu Xiaonuan's father glared angrily, his voice booming as he questioned Jiang Ming. His chest heaved violently, emotions teetering on the edge of explosion.
Jiang Ming took a deep breath, scanning the faces of those present before slowly speaking. “I have reviewed all the surveillance footage from the streets around Class 13 over the past month or so. This was no easy task; those recordings piled up like mountains. My colleagues and I worked day and night to review and analyze them. Finally, we identified several students who are highly suspicious. Why do I suspect them? Because their surveillance footage is questionable; there are recordings of them entering the school but none of them leaving. There’s only one main road out of the school, and under normal circumstances, they couldn’t just disappear without a trace. There’s definitely something wrong here.”
As he spoke, he gestured with his hands, trying to help the parents understand his reasoning.
“Who are they? Why don’t you make their names public?”
Lu Xiaonuan's father furrowed his brow even deeper, fury blazing in his eyes as he looked at Jiang Ming. “Since you have leads, why not share them with everyone? Why not let us take precautions? Do you know how many students there are in Class 13? Thousands! Their safety should be guaranteed.”
His voice grew hoarse with anger, emotions completely spiraling out of control.
Yan Qing listened quietly, having a rough idea of what Jiang Ming wanted to say. It was about the surveillance footage they had tirelessly sifted through in the office over the past few days, trying to identify any suspicious students among the vast amount of data collected from the incident at School 13.
However, he felt helpless. They currently lacked sufficient evidence to prove that these individuals were indeed responsible for the crime. Most of the surveillance footage had been recorded at night, and the images were too blurry to clearly identify any specific students. This was also why they had refrained from releasing any information.
As Yan Qing looked at the angry parents, he felt a deep bitterness, unsure of how to explain things in a way that would help them understand.
Jiang Ming took a deep breath, striving to keep his emotions in check. He knew it was crucial to stabilize the situation and continued with deliberate clarity, “The reason is that once we release this segment of surveillance footage, everything will spiral out of control.”
“Think about it. This student, hidden in the darkness, has already committed such a heinous act of bombing, which indicates he has lost all rationality—he is extremely dangerous. If we carelessly make the video public, it would be like cornering him into a dead end. He might resort to even more madness. He could very well use these thousands of innocent students as pawns in his revenge against society, dragging them down with him.”
“At that point, the entire school would plunge into chaos and panic. Parents would rush towards the school without regard for their safety, and nearby residents would be affected as well. The situation could quickly become uncontrollable. The scale of such a riot would far exceed our current police force's capacity to manage and could lead to unimaginable consequences.”
At this point, Lu Xiaonuan's and Zhang Yuqing's parents seemed to have begun to understand; they stopped arguing and instead listened intently to what Jiang Ming had to say.
