Qin Wan'er groggily opened her eyes, climbed out of bed, rubbed her eyes, and sniffed the air as if she caught a whiff of something delicious. She stumbled out of her room and was taken aback to see a table laden with various pastries and steaming meat porridge. It felt like a dream.
"Awake? Come eat!" Qin Feng had just entered the room and chuckled at the sight of Qin Wan'er standing there in a daze.
"Brother, is all this for me?" Qin Wan'er asked, a hint of disbelief in her voice. In the past, her brother had often shown disdain for her; why was he suddenly so kind?
She instinctively took a step back, wondering if this was her last meal.
Qin Feng couldn't help but furrow his brow and sighed. " Wan'er, come here. Do you still not trust your brother?"
Looking into Qin Feng's gentle eyes and recalling the meal from last night, Qin Wan'er slowly moved toward him.
Qin Feng smiled slightly and lifted her to sit at the table. "Alright, eat."
As she ate, Qin Wan'er occasionally glanced at Qin Feng, sensing that he seemed different somehow.
Qin Feng sat down at the desk and picked up a book.
"Brother, aren't you going to eat?" Qin Wan'er hesitated before asking.
Qin Feng turned to her with a smile. " Wan'er, I've already eaten. You go ahead; don’t mind me." He then turned back to his book.
His brow raised slightly as he noted that this world also had Confucius and was primarily Confucian in nature. According to the memories of his host, it was said that the court's Grand Scholar possessed Haoran Zhengqi, capable of subduing Great Demons with just a word—though he wondered how true that was.
He felt quite confident about taking the Keju examination since, after improving his physique with Black Snake's methods, having an excellent memory was just a basic talent for him; it was normal for him to learn quickly.
Before he knew it, he had flipped through the Four Books and Five Classics. He closed his eyes briefly; with the foundation laid by his host, he could now be considered a true Xiu Cai.
Suddenly, a clattering noise jolted him awake.
Qin Feng turned sharply to see that the table had been cleared. The sound came from the kitchen outside.
He quickly stood up and went out to find a small figure skillfully washing dishes. " Wan'er, why didn't you call your brother when you finished eating?"
"Ah, brother," she replied sheepishly, "I saw you so engrossed in your reading that I didn’t want to disturb you."
"This is all I should do," Qin Wan'er said, glancing at the entrance where Qin Feng stood. He quickly stood up and explained cautiously.
Qin Feng shook his head with a smile. "Alright, go ahead and wash. Once you're done, just entertain yourself." With that, he turned and walked away.
Qin Wan'er let out a sigh of relief. For some reason, she felt a bit nervous around her brother, a feeling that had shifted from fear to something more complex.
These past few days, Qin Wan'er felt as if she were dreaming. Her brother had bought her many new clothes and snacks, and he had tidied up the house thoroughly. He had also been diligent in his studies, as if he had transformed into a different person altogether.
No matter how one looked at it, this was the brother she had always wanted, and it made her very happy.
In the yard, under the shade of a large tree, Qin Feng lay on a lounge chair reading a book. A gentle breeze swept by, and beside him was a small table. Qin Wan'er was peeling grapes, occasionally feeding one to Qin Feng, who seemed thoroughly content.
Just then, the gate suddenly swung open with a loud bang. Several constables entered with serious expressions on their faces.
Qin Feng furrowed his brow and sat up straight. Qin Wan'er instinctively hid behind him, clutching his shirt in fear.
Qin Feng felt even more displeased now. He narrowed his eyes at the constables and spoke in a somewhat cold tone, "What is it?"
The leader of the group was a middle-aged man with a sturdy build that suggested he was skilled in martial arts. He looked at the young scholar before him and said calmly, "You must be Qin Xiucai."
Qin Feng nodded. "That's me."
"The County Magistrate requests your presence," the man stated.
