Years later
"This is outrageous! Just a mere Qian Ji inn, and I personally went to negotiate, talking until my throat nearly smoked, even willing to spend a thousand taels of gold, yet they still refused me! They are simply so arrogant!"
Hua Jinluo sat angrily in her chair, picked up her teacup, and gulped down several mouthfuls like a cow before slamming the cup down, her face filled with rage and resentment.
As soon as Ge Jiu Jiu heard the words Qian Ji inn, her previously dim eyes suddenly brightened. However, she still maintained her composure and poured another cup of tea for Hua Jinluo, softly saying, " Qian Ji inn is the most formidable sect in the martial world when it comes to crafting intricate weapons. They only assist reputable sects with their weaponry."
Upon hearing this, Hua Jinluo suddenly grinned mischievously at her, a glint of cunning in her eyes.
"Speaking of which, the Young Master of Qian Ji inn seems to be your Savior, A Jiu. Plus, you have a weapon from Qian Ji inn on you, right?"
"I... mine doesn't count..." Ge Jiu Jiu replied, but her hand unconsciously brushed over the crossbow she always carried with her, a flicker of panic and shyness crossing her gaze.
Hua Jinluo reached out playfully and ruffled her hair, grinning as she said, "A Jiu, that's not fair! Your crossbow might very well be crafted by Qian Jiang Xue! Do you know how many people he has offended? I heard someone has offered a high price for his head."
Ge Jiu Jiu's expression changed instantly; worry filled her face.
"Is that true? Didn't they say that Qian Ji inn is heavily fortified and ordinary people can't even enter? It can't be that easy for someone to get to him!"
"Who knows? Under heavy rewards, there will always be brave souls. If one can't kill him, send two; eventually, someone will succeed," Hua Jinluo said as she turned away from Ge Jiu Jiu, a mischievous smile curling at the corners of her lips.
"That aside, A Jiu, think about it. If I send you to Qian Ji inn to protect Qian Jiang Xue and save his life, wouldn't he owe us a huge favor? Maybe he'd be so grateful that he'd agree to my request and come to Meng Po Hall to help us design some intricate mechanisms and craft exquisite weapons?"
Ge Jiu Jiu furrowed her brow at this suggestion, feeling conflicted. Deep down, she longed to see him and protect him, but she couldn't shake off the feeling that Hua Jinluo's proposal was somewhat sordid—as if her protection of Qian Jiang Xue was merely a means to an end.
"Your silence means you agree!" Hua Jinluo's gloomy expression lifted entirely as she laughed joyfully, seemingly already envisioning the scene where Qian Jiang Xue would fulfill her request and help Meng Po Hall create exquisite weapons.
"Then get ready; we’ll set off on an auspicious day!"
"Do I really have to go?" The overwhelming joy surging within Ge Jiu Jiu quickly overcame her rational thoughts.
What could be more important right now than seeing the Unforgettable Savior? That's right! No matter what, since someone wants to kill him, she should definitely repay the life-saving grace he showed her back then.
Ge Jiu Jiu made up her mind and turned to prepare her luggage.
However, Hua Jinluo's voice lingered behind her like a haunting spirit: "A Jiu, you've had a crush on him for so many years. Now that you're going to Qian Ji inn, just the two of you together day and night—what if you end up getting too close? I’ll have to demand a hefty bride price from that guy!"
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Ge Jiu Jiu felt a rush of heat surge from her feet to her head, and her face instantly flushed. Embarrassed and angry, she grabbed a small flower pot from the stand by the door and hurled it at Hua Jinluo.
Hua Jinluo quickly dodged, moving with the agility of a nimble cat.
By the time she looked up again, Ge Jiu Jiu had already vanished from sight.
As Hua Jinluo spoke, he took out an abacus and began tapping away at it.
"If A Jiu gets returned, we can just have her take on more jobs to make up for the loss. But if she gets sold successfully, how much should the bride price be? Having the World's Best Mechanic as a brother-in-law—wouldn't that be quite impressive?"
Ge Jiu Jiu walked far away but inexplicably felt a chill run down her back, as if something bad was about to happen...
"Young Master, this is the new worker A Jiu. Just let him handle any chores you need done in the future."
The butler smiled broadly, warmly addressing the man sitting amidst piles of iron blocks and blueprints.
Qian Jiang Xue turned at the sound, still dressed in white as he had been years ago, with his hair tied back by a decorative ribbon and a jade belt cinching his waist. His sword-like brows and starry eyes, along with a slight smile at the corner of his lips, seemed casual yet carried an enchanting charm that made Ge Jiu Jiu feel as if spring had arrived overnight, with peach blossoms blooming everywhere. Her heart began to race uncontrollably.
It’s him! It really is him! After nine years, he has become even more handsome than before!
Ge Jiu Jiu clutched her chest, feeling as though her heart might leap out of her throat; she suddenly had an urge to nosebleed.
"You are A Jiu?" Qian Jiang Xue asked, his gaze seemingly captivated by Ge Jiu Jiu. The thoughtful expression on his face made her heart race inexplicably.
Why is he staring at me like that?
She was currently dressed in men's clothing, so it shouldn't be too easy for him to see through her disguise, right?
"You came at the right time; help me find a square ruler."
"Yes!" Ge Jiu Jiu took the opportunity to bury her head in the toolbox, trying to calm her excited heart.
Her hands trembled slightly as she rummaged through the tools for the square ruler.
"Brother, you look somewhat familiar. Have we met somewhere before?"
The man behind her suddenly spoke up, his intense gaze almost igniting flames on her back.
Ge Jiu Jiu steadied herself and looked up at Qian Jiang Xue, speaking in a rough voice, "Young Master, you must be mistaken. This is my first time at Qian Ji inn."
"Is that so?" Qian Jiang Xue nodded noncommittally before shifting his gaze. "Look at my memory; I think I took the square ruler to my room last night." As he spoke, he stood up and walked toward the wall, not dodging at all as he seemed about to collide with it. Just as he was about to hit the wall, it appeared to sense his approach and automatically swung open, revealing a gap large enough for two or three people to pass through.
Ge Jiu Jiu stared in astonishment and hurried to the door, only to discover that behind the wall was Qian Jiang Xue's bedroom. A thought struck her; Sister Jin Luo had sent her to protect Qian Jiang Xue. She had been worried about how she would guard him if an assassin struck at night since she didn't even know where his bedroom was.
Unexpectedly, just after entering Qian Ji inn, she had already figured out the mechanism of his bedroom. This meant that as long as she quietly slipped into his room every night, she could ensure his safety.
If only she could see the barely perceptible smile playing at the corners of Qian Jiang Xue's mouth inside the room at that moment, she might not be feeling so pleased.
