The next morning, when she returned to work, she found that Qian Jiang Xue had summoned all the maids in the manor, who stood in a neat row on the open ground outside the pavilion.
The maids whispered among themselves, their faces filled with curiosity and confusion.
"Last night, one of you sneaked into Young Master's room and stole his shoes..."
The steward shouted, his voice echoing in the empty courtyard.
“Cough, cough!” Ge Jiu Jiu nearly choked on her own saliva. What did it mean to sneak into his room?
With that perverted room of his, if he didn’t allow someone in, who could possibly enter? Even if someone did manage to get in, they wouldn’t be able to come out!
The only reason anyone would take his shoes was that this guy was so twisted he used the size of his shoes as a key to unlock his secrets.
She scoffed inwardly, her face betraying a hint of disdain.
The maids quickly began to murmur among themselves. The steward raised his hand, signaling for silence: “Now think carefully about who could have done such a thing. If no one admits to it, we at Qian Ji inn will not keep anyone with suspicious intentions in the manor. We may have to replace all the maids for safety!”
Panic erupted among the maids; some looked terrified while others began to cast suspicious glances at one another. Ge Jiu Jiu, however, furrowed her brow from behind a pillar, feeling a surge of anger and disappointment.
What is disillusionment? This is disillusionment! The man she had secretly admired for so many years—first she discovered he was actually a lecher, and now he was forcing the maids to suspect each other. Where was his sense of reason?
Her eyes were filled with disappointment and heartache, as if she were looking at a stranger.
Was this still the same ethereal young man from years ago who had left her utterly enchanted?
Ge Jiu Jiu gritted her teeth and stepped out from behind the pillar, her strides resolute as if she had made a significant decision. "You don't need to pressure them anymore; they know nothing!"
"It's you, A Jiu..." Qian Jiang Xue raised an eyebrow, a smile playing on his lips that seemed to hide some secret. "What’s this? Do you know who that flower thief was who flirted with me last night?"
At his words, Ge Jiu Jiu's face flushed crimson. Angered, she yanked off her little hat, letting her long hair cascade over her shoulders. The strands danced wildly with her movements, mirroring her chaotic emotions. "What flower thief? You're the real lecher here!"
The butler, sensing the intimidating gaze of the Young Master behind him, hurriedly led everyone away, leaving reluctantly.
Once the spacious hall was left with only Ge Jiu Jiu and Qian Jiang Xue, he smiled and rose from his chair. His smile now held a touch of sincerity and warmth. "Miss, you once tried to feed pigs to save me, and today you show such selflessness in wanting to rescue my maid. Truly a rare display of pure goodness."
Ge Jiu Jiu was stunned for several seconds before realizing what he meant by feeding pigs. Her eyes widened in surprise. "So you knew who I was all along?"
"My memory has always been slightly better than others', especially since your heroic act back then left a deep impression on me. It would be hard to forget," Qian Jiang Xue replied, leisurely observing her face that was a mix of shyness and anger, his gaze filled with a hint of affection and teasing.
"Are you trying to mock me for being feverish and losing my mind back then? If I hadn’t been out of my wits and starved for three days without strength to escape, I would never have saved someone like you—a hypocritical lecher! Had I known you were this kind of person, I wouldn’t… I wouldn’t…"
As she spoke, Ge Jiu Jiu suddenly covered her mouth, her nose tingling as tears welled up in her eyes, threatening to spill over like a dam about to break.
She would never admit in front of someone like him that she had always liked him; she was just young and naive back then, deceived by his innocent-looking face into believing he was the only one who had ever truly cared for her over the years.
Caught off guard by the glistening tears in her eyes, Qian Jiang Xue stared at her unmasked disappointment, his expression filled with guilt and concern. "You… are crying? I didn’t mean to upset you; I was just curious about your motives for hiding your identity here in the manor. Qian Ji inn has made too many enemies, so I wanted to test you a bit, but I absolutely meant no harm…"
"What? A test? So everything that happened last night was within his expectations? Then, there really wasn't a woman secretly meeting with him?"
This sudden thought made Ge Jiu Jiu's already frustrated mood turn strange, as if a bottle of mixed flavors had been overturned in her heart, with various emotions intertwining.
"You just said you wanted to send the maids away..."
"I just want you to tell me the purpose of your visit to Qian Ji inn," Qian Jiang Xue said sincerely, his gaze fixed intently on Ge Jiu Jiu, as if trying to see through her heart.
Ge Jiu Jiu felt so scrutinized that she didn't know where to put her hands and feet. Her fingers unconsciously twisted the hem of her clothes, revealing her unease. She shot him a fierce glare and then hurriedly moved to the grass pile outside the pavilion, retrieving the shoe she had carelessly thrown away last night. In front of him, she also tossed the crossbow she always carried with her at Qian Jiang Xue's feet. "Is this your reason for treating me like a fool, testing me and playing tricks on me? Since you're so suspicious, I’ll leave and you won’t have to doubt anymore! I’m done playing this game!"
Qian Jiang Xue stared at her blankly until she threw the crossbow at his feet, and then he seemed to come to a realization. "You've kept it by your side all these years? You must have been secretly in love with me, which is why you approached me deliberately?"
Ge Jiu Jiu clenched her fists tightly, her knuckles turning white from the pressure as she glared at him through gritted teeth. "What did you say? Who's in love with you?"
Qian Jiang Xue suppressed a laugh and waved his hand dismissively, but inside he felt a warm sensation spreading through him. He must be overthinking; where in the world would there be an assassin who blushes at the sight of him? And which assassin would carry around a crossbow gifted by him for years? Most unlikely of all, what kind of assassin would give up their mission just to prevent maids from losing their jobs?
In his dull and monotonous life, how rare it was to have a woman like her who left such a deep impression and brought joy! Hadn't his father urged him to marry just last month? If the bride were this girl, life would surely be exciting.
With this thought in mind, Qian Jiang Xue walked slowly up to Ge Jiu Jiu, bending slightly at the waist. His dark phoenix eyes locked onto hers as he spoke softly, laced with teasing and seduction. "What I say doesn't matter; what matters is that you are the first woman to share my bed. If I let you leave just like that, wouldn’t I be at a loss?"
