Upon arriving at the police station, the officers quickly took our statements and filed a report. Gu Yu also obtained a list of the adoptive families from the organizer of the Adoption Event that day. By cross-referencing the platform account information with the list of adopters, we swiftly identified a suspect—a third-year university student.
He had attended the Adoption Event and recognized me by my voice as a blogger he followed. He had been lingering around my booth, expressing a desire to exchange WeChat IDs, but was led away by Gu Yu and his colleague. When he was brought in for questioning, his mother followed closely behind.
"Officer, officer, you must have made a mistake," she insisted. "My son is from 886 University; how could he possibly do something like this? Someone must be framing him! Yes! Who is it? You tell me, and I will sue them!"
The officer asked us to wait for a moment for an identification. We sat in the hallway, exchanging glances with the frantic mother across from us. Suddenly, she seemed to realize something and glared at me fiercely.
"Is it you? They said it was a female streamer who reported this. Is it you?"
"You look like you come from a bad family; it must be you who seduced my son."
Gu Yu stood up. "If you say one more word, I will go inside and report you for slander. We already have plenty of cases on our hands; we don’t need this one."
Clearly intimidated, she shifted to muttering curses under her breath.
On the way back, I asked Gu Yu, "We have plenty of cases?"
"Medical cases."
Got it.
"Why hasn’t Shishi updated yet? She wouldn’t really go get spayed, would she?"
"Did Shishi get spayed today?"
"There’s no such thing as regular spaying; you uncultured lot. Shishi must have found a boyfriend and doesn’t want us anymore."
"Really? Can Shi Shi Boyfriend be neutered?"
After several days without any video updates, my Cyber friends started jokingly urging me to post more. I couldn't help but laugh a little.
I hadn't stepped outside for days, spending all my time at home playing with Didi and the others. I kept thinking that if it weren't for me, that little kitten wouldn't have died. It would have found a loving family, playing with toy mice every day just like Didi and Mo Mo. It would have banged its bowl when hungry, just like Tuan Tuan.
The thought made me unable to hold back my tears as I hugged Wait a minute. I cried until my eyes were swollen, only to see Wait a minute squinting back at me.
...
My phone buzzed incessantly.
"Save Your Dog's Life: Wait a minute needs some exercise."
"Save Your Dog's Life: Should I come pick you up?"
"Save Your Dog's Life: Buy one get one free on milk tea, want some?"
"Save Your Dog's Life: Haven't you finished all your Vaccine shots? Why not eat everything on the restricted list?"
"I: Eat."
Spicy hot pot.
I focused on eating while Gu Yu helped me cook the vegetables and meat. When I could no longer eat, he handed me a cup of Hawthorn Juice.
"You should eat too." I pushed the Ice Jelly towards him.
"Yeah, now your eyes are as puffy as your mouth."
"Ah!" I quickly pulled out a mirror to check.
"Crying has been done, and I've eaten my fill. How about coming to our hospital as an assistant for a few days?"
"Is your hospital short-staffed?"
"Short of you."
Gu Yu mentioned that the intern at the hospital was returning to school for a defense and had taken a few days off, asking me to help out for a bit.

In the pet hospital, besides me, there were a few other temp workers. Some were rescued animals, while others had been abandoned at the hospital's doorstep. Until they found new families, they would continue to "help" around the hospital.
At the entrance, a three-legged Golden Retriever was in charge of reception. On my first day there, it lay down on its back, showing me its name tag on its chest. It read: "Receptionist - Egg Yolk - Dan Huang."
