The night sky was dark and devoid of light, with the occasional rumble of cars echoing through the streets, amplifying the eerie silence. Chen Rui and Erin sat quietly in an abandoned factory, the flickering lights of the equipment screens casting reflections on their tense faces. They had been analyzing the data provided by Doctor Xian for several hours, and the situation was becoming increasingly dire.
The data was truly alarming. Erin's voice trembled slightly with unease as she spoke. The experimental project involved not only modifications to the human body but also the application of chemical agents and genetic engineering. Those transformed subjects were nothing short of inhumane weapons.
Chen Rui stared at the data on the screen, his brow furrowed in concentration. This was not merely research on bioweapons; his ambitions extended far beyond that. He paused for a moment, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes. He envisioned creating an unrestrained army that would not rely on external resources. Once these experimental subjects succeeded, they could rapidly deploy anywhere and wreak havoc.
Erin sighed, her anxiety intensifying. Could the information they had stop him? If he succeeded in implementing this plan, the fate of the Special Zone—and perhaps even the entire city—would be irrevocably altered.
After a moment of silence, Chen Rui suddenly stood up, determination etched on his face. "Even if we can't completely stop him, we can at least make more people aware of the truth. We cannot allow this mad plan to continue."
Erin nodded, her eyes glinting with resolve. "Yes, our situation is extremely dangerous. They've already sent people after us; every step we take brings us closer to death."
Chen Rui took a deep breath and spoke slowly, "You're right. We need a plan instead of running blindly. We can't wait any longer."
Suddenly, faint footsteps echoed from outside the factory. The two immediately became alert, quickly shutting off the screen and blending into the darkness. Chen Rui gripped his weapon tightly, scanning their surroundings with sharp eyes.
"It's them," Erin whispered.
Chen Rui remained silent, his gaze fixed coldly on the entrance, his eyes sharp as blades. He knew that this chase was about to face its first real challenge.
The footsteps grew louder until several fully armed soldiers emerged from the shadows into the factory, their faces grim and their strides steady. Clearly well-trained, they sensed something amiss in the air.
"Drop your weapons and surrender! You have nowhere to run," one soldier shouted coldly, devoid of any emotion.
Without hesitation, Chen Rui pressed a button behind him, plunging the entire factory into darkness as all lights went out abruptly. At that moment, a beam of light zipped across one side of the factory—it was Erin activating her portable jamming device that would temporarily disable nearby electronic equipment.
"We have five minutes," Erin whispered with a smirk on her face. "If you want to live, make your decision quickly."
The soldiers struggled to adapt to the sudden darkness; some instinctively fumbled for their weapons while trying to regroup. However, Chen Rui and Erin had already familiarized themselves with the factory layout and swiftly vanished into the shadows. Every step was fraught with danger; there was no time for hesitation.
"Split up," Chen Rui ordered softly.
Erin nodded in agreement as they instinctively separated and darted off in different directions. Meanwhile, on the other side of the factory, the soldiers gradually adjusted to their dark surroundings and began searching for Chen Rui and Erin's whereabouts.
Seconds later, an explosion rocked the factory, sending shockwaves filled with acrid smoke throughout the area. Erin covered her mouth and nose with her hand as she moved quickly toward the source of the sound while Chen Rui seized the opportunity to hide among some abandoned equipment. His fingers trembled slightly, but his resolve grew stronger.
"Hurry up! Hurry up!" Erin's voice crackled through their communicator—urgent and anxious. "This place is too dangerous! My position has been compromised; reinforcements are on their way!"
Chen Rui's heart raced as he quickly activated an escape route located on one side of the factory without thinking twice. He knew that escaping this place was their only chance of survival.
However, just as they were about to burst out of the factory, bright lasers suddenly swept across their path. Chen Rui felt a sharp pain shoot through his back. He collapsed to the ground in agony but did not stop moving; gritting his teeth, he pushed himself off the ground and continued running forward.
"Chen Rui!" Erin's voice came through urgently; she clearly sensed something was wrong nearby but knew she couldn't rescue him at that moment.
"I'm fine," Chen Rui gritted out through clenched teeth as he hurriedly gathered their data and made his escape.
Eileen fell silent, understanding that only by taking away those crucial data could they truly pose a threat to the old man. As the laser guns continued to fire, the air around the factory grew increasingly tense and oppressive. Chen Rui quickly utilized the equipment nearby for cover, and ultimately, he broke through the blockade, but was closely pursued by several soldiers. At that moment, in the night sky of the Special Zone, the signs of an impending storm had quietly arrived.
