This weekend, Sang Yu decided not to go back to her mother's place, so she called Lin Yue, hoping to invite her out for some shopping. Unfortunately, Lin Yue was busy this weekend, and Yu Guoguo had gone out of town with her mother. Not wanting to go out alone, Sang Yu ended up just staying at home.
She thought about calling Lu Jing but ultimately decided against it. She still wasn't used to taking the initiative. After all, she was still affected by past events and couldn't quite get over that mental hurdle, lacking confidence in their relationship.
In the end, it was Lu Jing who called her, informing her that he had to work overtime at the office and wouldn't be able to see her that evening. However, he promised to take her out tomorrow.
"How about I take you home for dinner tonight?" Lu Jing couldn't help but tease Sang Yu again.
"Who wants to go home with you for dinner? You can go back by yourself!" Sang Yu's face suddenly flushed red, unsure if it was from embarrassment or irritation.
"A ugly daughter-in-law has to meet her mother-in-law eventually; don't be shy!"
Sang Yu widened her eyes, thinking how thick-skinned this person had become. "Who is your daughter-in-law?! Just hang up already!"
Watching the call disconnect, Lu Jing knew Sang Yu was embarrassed again. Sigh! His Bao'er was just too easily flustered.
When Assistant Zhao walked in, Lu Jing was humming a tune, clearly in a good mood, which made Assistant Zhao wonder if he had entered the wrong room.
By the time Lu Jing returned home, it was already quite late. Aunt Geng had arrived.
"Jing is back! Come over here; this is Aunt Geng I told you about," Lu Mu said, pointing to a young woman standing nearby. "This is Aunt Geng's daughter, Gao Ranran. She's one year younger than you; you two used to play together when you were kids!"
Lu Jing politely greeted Aunt Geng and then nodded slightly at the young woman.
Seeing the impressive Lu Jing, Geng Qiu couldn't help but nod in satisfaction.
Gao Ranran knew her mother wanted her to date someone from the Lu family. Initially reluctant, she was taken aback by how handsome he was in person—much more so than her boyfriend abroad—so she immediately called out enthusiastically, "Brother Jing!"
Lu Jing involuntarily shivered at the sound of her voice. Ah yes, that high-pitched tone; he remembered his cousin mentioning it before.
After more than ten years apart, Jing had grown into a fine young man. "Look at him! So tall and handsome! Lin Lin, how did you raise such a son? I'm really envious," Geng Qiu said sincerely. She would be more than happy to have someone like him as a son-in-law.
Lu Mu felt pleased hearing Geng Qiu's words; who wouldn't want to hear their child praised? "Oh please, don't flatter him too much! This little rascal was such a troublemaker when he was younger; it’s only in these past couple of years that he’s given me less worry. Besides, your Gao Ranran is so outstanding; I should be envious of you! You know I've always wanted a daughter but never got my wish. If I could trade with you, I would—little girls are just so sweet."
Her biggest regret in life was not having a daughter. After Lu Jing was born, her health declined and his father absolutely refused to let her have a third child; otherwise, she would have tried again.
"If you don’t mind, I’d gladly give her to your family." Everyone present understood the implication behind Geng Qiu's words.
Hearing what her mother said, Gao Ranran shyly glanced at Lu Jing and pretended to be bashful as she said, "Mom..."
"Look at this child; she's even shy!"
The little girl was shy, so let’s not tease her anymore. Let’s eat. Lu Mu felt a surge of joy at Gao Ranran's attitude; it seemed the girl had taken a liking to her son. However, this was not surprising. She wasn’t bragging—her youngest son was quite handsome, and since he was little, girls had always chased after him. The only problem was that he had never brought a girlfriend home.
At this moment, if Lu Jing couldn’t figure out why his mother had called him back, then all those years he spent growing up were in vain. It seemed this meal was a banquet prepared for him. He wondered why his mother had made him come back just because her friend was visiting; they were all waiting for him here. He shot an unhappy glance at his mother, thinking that if he had known it would be like this, he wouldn’t have returned at all—he could have stayed home to have dinner with Bao'er instead. But now that he was back, he couldn’t just turn around and leave; he still had to give his mother some face, so Lu Jing suppressed his displeasure.
Lu Mu felt a bit guilty under her son’s gaze and hurriedly urged everyone to take their seats. “Quick, sit down! It’s getting late; everyone must be hungry.”
Gao Linlin consciously sat next to Lu Jing, calling him "Brother Jing" with every breath. Lu Jing found her incredibly annoying; she buzzed around him like a mosquito, constantly droning in his ear. Yet, for the sake of Lu Mu’s reputation, he had to endure it, maintaining a cold expression and saying nothing.
Gao Linlin seemed completely oblivious to Lu Jing’s displeasure and remained very enthusiastic throughout the evening.
Of course, Gao Linlin wasn’t happy with Lu Jing's attitude either, but since she liked this man, she could only bear with it.
At nine o'clock in the evening, they finally sent their guests off. Lu Jing watched the car disappear into the distance before turning back inside. Lu Mu followed behind him nervously. When she saw her son standing at the door with his arms crossed, blocking her way, she decided to take the initiative. “What are you doing standing there? Move aside and don’t block the way!”
“Mom, shouldn’t you give me an explanation?” Lu Jing lifted his chin slightly, signaling that it was time for Lu Mu to explain herself.
Lu Mu felt guilty and avoided eye contact with her son. “I’m your mother! What do I need to explain?” She decided to play dumb.
Lu Jing remained silent, staring at Lu Mu with a serious expression.
Unable to withstand her son's gaze any longer, Lu Mu finally spoke up. “Well, I noticed you don’t have a girlfriend, so I thought I’d introduce you to someone. It’s not my fault; you’re just not trying hard enough! You’re already this old and still no girlfriend—otherwise, I wouldn’t bother.”
Lu Jing rolled his eyes. “I’m only in my teens; why are you in such a hurry? It’s not like you don’t have grandchildren to hold.”
Thinking of her mischievous grandson made Lu Mu's head ache; she didn’t even know who the child took after.
“What’s wrong with being in your teens? Do you think that’s too early? Even if you got married now, you’d still be the last one in our family to do so.” She couldn’t believe how unaware he was of reality.
Lu Jing looked up at the sky. Why did his family seem so different from others? Most people married in their thirties; everyone in his family married young—his parents did, his brother did too—and now he wanted to get married as well.
