Sang Yu packed two suitcases in total; winter clothes are so bulky that one suitcase simply couldn't hold enough. Sang Xia had fewer belongings, bringing only a change of clothes since she never intended to stay for such a long time. Their extended stay was purely accidental.
With the extra items they received from school for the New Year, they had quite a lot to take home. If the sisters were to take a taxi back, it would surely be quite a hassle. Looking at the pile of things on the floor, Sang Yu felt that having Sang's father come to pick them up was indeed the right decision.
The next day, when Sang Yu returned home after work, Sang's father was already there. "Dad, you're here!"
"You're off work now, Da Bao. Sit down and rest for a bit; we'll head home soon," Sang's father said, feeling happy to see his eldest daughter. It had been a while since he last saw her, as she hadn't been home recently.
"I'm not tired, Dad. No need to rest; let's just go," Sang Yu replied. It was already getting dark outside, and by the time they got home, it would likely be completely dark.
"No rest? Alright then, we can rest at home. Let's go." Sang's father picked up some of the items from school that Sang Yu had received but realized he couldn't carry them all himself. In the end, it was Sang Xia who helped with some of them. Sang Yu pushed two suitcases as the three of them headed out the door, wondering if they had forgotten anything and if they needed to go back for it.
"Nothing left, Dad."
"Let's go then, Lao Sang. Stop dawdling and hurry up! It's so close; if we forget something, we can always come back." After returning from her break, she hadn’t spent many days at home before heading out again and missed her dear family members terribly. However, she missed her mother's cooking even more.
The two suitcases were packed tightly in the trunk. The father and daughters chatted and laughed all the way home. When they arrived, Sang Yu was busy cooking in the kitchen with the exhaust fan on and didn't notice their return.
"Mom!" Sang Xia greeted Sang Yu from the kitchen doorway.
"My dear mother, I'm back! Did you miss me?" Sang Xia bounced into the kitchen and hugged Sang Yu from behind, planting a kiss on her cheek.
Sang Yu and Sang Xia had different personalities, which influenced how they interacted with their father. While Sang Yu was more reserved, Sang Xia was quite outgoing.
Sang Yu envied the way Sang Xia interacted with their father but felt unable to express herself in the same way. Knowing that her father loved her was enough for her.
Turning to look at her playful younger daughter, she pretended to be annoyed and said, "What do you miss me for? Didn't you have so much fun with your sister that you forgot about me?"
"Oh come on! Why are you jealous of your sister? I just missed her!"
"Don't you want to see your two daughters getting along?"
Sang Xia chimed in playfully, "Mom! If you knew why I didn’t come back sooner, you'd be thanking me! I saved your eldest daughter!"
Sang Yu retorted, "Thank you? You're just a stumbling block in my path with Da Bao and my son-in-law! I should be hitting you instead of thanking you! What are you thinking?!"
"Fine! I guess I can't say anything without being accused of causing trouble between you sisters." After that, Sang Yu ignored her younger daughter and turned to her eldest daughter at the door with a kind smile. "Da Bao, you must be tired. Hurry up and change your clothes in your room; come down for some fruit—I’ve already washed it and put it on the table."
"Okay, Mom! I'll go up now and help you when I come down."
"Hmph! Mom is biased!" Sang Xia let go of her hold on Sang Yu's waist and placed her hands on her hips, pretending to be angry.
"If you were as sensible as your sister, I wouldn't be biased."
"Hmph! That's impossible!"
Sang Yu chuckled softly, her little sister truly was endearing. She couldn't help but feel a mix of amusement and exasperation at her own daughter. "Alright, my little ancestor, hurry up and go change your clothes. Come on, wearing so many layers, aren’t you hot?"
"Hehe, it is pretty warm," Sang Xia replied. "Sister, let’s go change our clothes before we head out." She linked her arm with Sang Yu's and led the way upstairs.
