Lu Jingzhi held Sang Yu tightly in his arms, burying his head in her neck as tears streamed down his face. This man, who had only cried as a child, found himself weeping the moment he saw Sang Yu.
Sang Yu sensed that something was off with Lu Jingzhi. "What’s wrong?" she asked, concern etched on her face.
After what felt like an eternity, Lu Jingzhi finally spoke. "Nothing, I just missed you. Did you miss me?"
Sang Yu couldn't bring herself to say the words "I miss you," but she nodded in response.
"Let’s get inside the car; it’s too cold out here," Lu Jingzhi said, releasing her and noticing her nose had turned red from the chill.
He opened the back door and sat down, pulling Sang Yu onto his lap. He leaned in and gave her a passionate kiss that left her dizzy and dazed.
After a while, Lu Jingzhi finally let her go. Sang Yu rested her head on his shoulder while he played with her fingers. "It’s almost New Year’s; aren’t you guys getting a break?" she asked.
"Soon," he replied. "We get off on the twenty-eighth of the twelfth lunar month."
"Isn’t that a bit late?" Sang Yu questioned.
Lu Jingzhi tapped her lightly on the head. "Most companies have this schedule; it’s just you teachers who get longer breaks."
Sang Yu nodded in agreement. "Even civil servants get off on New Year’s Eve. Where will you celebrate?"
"In Yun Cheng; my family is all there," Lu Jingzhi answered.
"And you?" he asked.
"We go back to my grandmother's house in the countryside every year for New Year," Sang Yu replied.
Hearing this made Lu Jingzhi's hopes of whisking her away on New Year’s Eve vanish instantly. "When will you be back?" he asked.
"Probably on the third day of the New Year," she said. "We usually return by then."
Sang Yu had made an excuse to come out to buy things, but she couldn’t stay out too long. "You should head back; I’ve been out long enough."
"I don’t want you to go," Lu Jingzhi said, holding her tightly. They had only just met half an hour ago, and now they had to part again.
"I’ll find a time to see you after the New Year," Sang Yu comforted him, thinking of a reason to return to the city center later.
"Just keep your word and go back," he replied reluctantly. He was worried about her family coming looking for her; it wasn’t yet time for them to meet, and he needed to think about how to gain their approval.
With a gentle kiss goodbye, Lu Jingzhi let Sang Yu leave, though she turned back several times as she walked away, reluctant to go home.
As Lu Jingzhi pondered over how he should resolve this issue soon—after all, meeting his girlfriend shouldn’t have to be done in secret—Sang Yu returned home to find her siblings still watching television.
"Sis, where are the things you bought?" Sang Xia asked without hesitation, interrupting Sang Yu's thoughts.
