At seven in the morning, Sang Yu stared at her reflection in the mirror, her hair a mess and her eyes so swollen they barely opened. She felt on the verge of a breakdown. How could she face anyone like this? How could she face anyone?
She had tossed and turned all night, not sleeping a single minute. And now, she had to meet her boyfriend's family in this state? Oh heavens, could she catch a break?
She picked up her phone and sent a WeChat message to Lu Jingzhi: "How about you all come another day?"
"What’s wrong?" Lu Jingzhi replied instantly. He hadn’t slept either, an unusual occurrence for him.
"My appearance today is really not great," she typed back. No amount of makeup could hide it.
"It’s fine; they won’t mind you."
Sang Yu thought to herself that it was she who minded.
"Ugh, never mind," she replied.
"It’s okay, babe. Don’t worry; my family likes you."
Unable to sleep, Sang Yu went downstairs to make breakfast. Just as she finished cooking, she noticed Sang also getting up. With some trepidation, she asked, "Dad, you’re up?"
Sang responded coldly with a simple "Hmm." Hearing that made Sang Yu's heart ache; Sang had never treated her this way before.
Sang's monther came down at that moment and shot a glare at Sang. "Da Bao, why are you up so early?"
"I couldn’t sleep, Mom. Dad, please sit down and eat."
Sang Xia usually slept until she woke up naturally, so Sang Yu had left food in the pot for her.
While eating breakfast, Sang Yu glanced at her dad and then at her mom, hesitating several times before speaking. Sang's monther couldn’t take it anymore and said, "Da Bao, do you have something to tell us?" After saying that, she nudged Sang with her elbow.
Sang put down her bowl with a sigh. "Go ahead; what is it?"
"Um, Lu Jingzhi said his parents are coming over this morning," Sang Yu said quietly, looking down.
"What?" They seemed not to have understood clearly. "What did you say? Repeat that."
"Last night Lu Jingzhi called me and said his parents are coming over this morning." Sang Yu repeated herself while secretly observing Sang's mother's expression.
Sang's mother exchanged glances with Sang; they seemed to have guessed Lu Jingzhi's intentions. The muscles in Sang's face twitched slightly, making it hard to read his thoughts.
"Da Bao, why didn’t you tell us last night? Now I’m completely unprepared for this."
"Well, when he called me last night it was too late; you and Dad were already asleep, so I didn’t want to disturb you."
Sang's monther had not dismantled her daughter's little scheme. She knew that her daughter must have deliberately mentioned it this morning, fearing they wouldn't allow Lu Jingzhi's mother to come.
Sang Yu said, "She indeed has a little plan."
"Did Lu Jingzhi tell you why they are coming today?"
Sang Yu shook her head. "He didn't say anything. Lu Jingzhi really didn't mention it, and I didn't ask. I guess they are just here to apologize."
At a glance, Sang's monther could tell from her daughter's expression that Lu Jingzhi had not shared anything with her.
"Da Bao, hurry and wake your sister up. The guests will be here soon. It would be unacceptable if she isn't up by the time they arrive," Sang's monther instructed Sang Yu.
"Lao Sang, go mop the floor. Da Bao, why are you just standing there? Quickly go wake Sang Xia up, and then come help clean up."
"Oh," Sang Yu replied blankly, not understanding why her mother was suddenly in such a rush to tidy up the house.
