"Smart," she said slowly as she walked down the stairs. "Do you know why I chose this place? Because everything began here, and it should end here too."
"Where is Zhou Yu?"
"She is safe." Li Mei stepped in front of me.
"Don't you want to know the truth more than her whereabouts?"
I stared at her mask. "Why fake your own death?"
"Because someone forced me to." She pulled a USB drive from her pocket.
"This contains all the answers you seek. But the condition for the exchange is that you must delete all the information you've gathered today."
"Including Zhou Huifang's true identity?"
Li Mei suddenly laughed. "You really figured it out. She is not Zhou Yu's mother at all. The real Zhou Huifang died a long time ago, ten years ago to be exact."
Just then, a noise came from the second floor. We both looked up, and a familiar figure stood by the railing.
"Don't say anything!" the person shouted.
I recognized that voice—it was Zhou Yu.
But she was also wearing a mask, identical to Li Mei's.
"It's too late," Li Mei said. "She already knows too much."
Zhou Yu hurried down the stairs, exclaiming, "You promised me!"
"The plan has changed," Li Mei turned to me.
"Do you want to know why Zhou Yu disappeared? Because she discovered a shocking secret about her mother's death..."
Before she could finish, a loud crash echoed from backstage, followed by a pungent smell of smoke.
"No!" Zhou Yu screamed, "It's happening again!"
Li Mei spun around sharply, "Damn it, it's her!"
I barely had time to react before thick smoke began to fill the theater.
Through the haze, I saw a figure standing at the backstage door, holding something up.
"Run!" Li Mei shoved me forward.
But it was too late; the figure pressed a button on the remote control in their hand.
In an instant, all the doors were locked tight.
We were trapped in this theater that was about to go up in flames.
And that figure removed their mask, revealing a face identical to Zhou Huifang's.
Thick smoke quickly filled the entire theater.
I swiftly pulled out a handkerchief to cover my mouth and nose, scanning the surroundings for an escape route.
"This way!" Li Mei grabbed my arm. "The Dressing Room has a secret passage!"
We followed her through the haze.
Behind us, I heard Zhou Yu coughing, accompanied by the sound of high heels clicking against the floor—someone wearing Zhou Huifang's mask was chasing us.
"Why fire again?" Zhou Yu shouted as we ran. "Why must we repeat the tragedy from a year ago?"
"Shut up and run!" Li Mei snapped.
I noticed that Li Mei seemed unusually familiar with the layout of this place.
Turning a corner, we came upon a door marked "Dressing Room."
The doorknob was rusted and worn.
Li Mei quickly yanked a necklace from around her neck, which held a small key.
"I had this made back then," she explained as she inserted the key into the lock.
Just as the key turned, I heard a cold laugh behind us: "Li Mei, you really did leave yourself an escape route."
We turned around and saw the person impersonating Zhou Huifang standing at the end of the corridor, holding a handgun.
"Put down the gun, sister." Li Mei's voice suddenly softened.
Sister? I was taken aback.
"You betrayed me," the person said, their voice trembling. "You promised we would always be together."
"I did not betray you, Rose." Li Mei slowly removed her mask.
I gasped—her left cheek was covered in burn scars, while her right side was unblemished, as if two people had been stitched together.
"You’re twins?" I finally understood.
"Li Mei, Li Mei Gui," Zhou Yu suddenly spoke up.
"One is a makeup artist, and the other is a special effects artist. But on stage, they often swap identities."
"Until that fire." Li Mei Gui—the one impersonating Zhou Huifang—stepped forward.
"You actually pushed me into the fire to save Zhou Yu."
