"No!" Li Mei shouted excitedly.
"You wanted to kill Zhou Yu! Because she discovered the truth, that Zhou Huifang's death ten years ago was not an accident!"
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out.
The bullet grazed my ear and struck the wall.
"Stop talking!" Li Mei Gui screamed.
At that moment, I noticed Zhou Yu quietly pulling out her phone.
In the glow of the screen, I saw her activate the recording function.
"Why did you want to kill Zhou Huifang?" I deliberately asked loudly, trying to divert Li Mei Gui's attention.
"Because she discovered the truth," Li Mei said suddenly.
"She found out that Rose was using special effects makeup to embezzle funds from the theater. Zhou Huifang threatened to expose her, so..."
Another gunshot echoed. This time, the bullet hit Li Mei in the shoulder.
"I told you to stop talking!" Li Mei Gui shouted hysterically.
The smoke thickened, and flames began to spread from the end of the corridor.
Just at that critical moment, the door to the Dressing Room suddenly burst open from the inside.
A figure dashed out like lightning and lunged at Li Mei Gui. With a loud bang, the handgun fell to the ground.
I focused my gaze and was shocked to see it was Xiao Wang!
"Did you call the police?" I shouted at Xiao Wang.
"They're already on their way," he said, firmly restraining Li Mei Gui. "I've been following you."
Li Mei rushed into the Dressing Room and quickly emerged with a medical kit.
She skillfully bandaged her wounds and then looked at Zhou Yu. "I'm sorry, I broke my promise."
Zhou Yu removed her mask, revealing a face free of scars. "It's okay; I recorded everything anyway."
I looked at them in confusion. "So this was all planned?"
"Not entirely," Li Mei said with a bitter smile.
"We just wanted to extract a confession from Rose. We didn't expect her to set the place on fire."
The sound of police sirens grew louder in the distance.
We subdued Li Mei Gui on the ground, waiting for the police to arrive.
"But I still don't understand," I said, turning to Zhou Yu. "Since you weren't disfigured, why pretend to be missing?"
Zhou Yu pulled out a notebook from her bag. "This is my mother's diary. I found it while sorting through her belongings last year."
She opened to a page: "'Today I saw Li Mei Gui stealing from the group funds again. I must stop her; this concerns the reputation of the entire troupe...'"
"The last page says: 'If anything happens to me, make sure to check Li Mei Gui's safe. The password is...'" Zhou Yu's voice choked.
"I know that safe," Li Mei suddenly said. "It's right here in this Dressing Room."
She walked over to the corner and moved aside a full-length mirror.
Behind it was a safe, clearly visible.
"It requires a fingerprint and a password," Li Mei said. "I have a backup of Rose's fingerprint, but the password..."
"It's my birthday," Zhou Yu said. "The numbers reversed. My mother wrote it at the end of her diary."
At that moment, I heard a light laugh behind me.
Turning around, I saw Li Mei Gui had somehow broken free from Xiao Wang's control and was holding another gun that she had pulled from who knows where.
"Did you think it was over just like this?" Her eyes had turned wild.
"How about we reenact the good old days from ten years ago?"
Her finger was on the trigger, the gun aimed at Zhou Yu.
"Bang!"
The gunshot rang out, but Li Mei Gui suddenly collapsed. Behind her stood a fully armed SWAT officer.
"All done," the SWAT officer said. "Lin, we owe you for your cooperation this time."
I let out a sigh of relief and looked at the stunned Zhou Yu and Li Mei. "Sorry, I forgot to mention. I'm actually an undercover agent from the Major Crimes Unit."
"What?" Zhou Yu exclaimed in surprise.
But what shocked her even more was what was inside the safe—there were not only ledgers proving Li Mei Gui's crimes but also a video recording.
In the video, Zhou Huifang was speaking directly to the camera: "Dear daughter, if you are watching this video, it means I may have..."
