Wu Yunyun had yet to figure out how to face him. After all, being caught by the very person she had been talking about was quite the predicament.
In her moment of distraction, Gu Si Yi walked up beside her.
Wu Yunyun turned and respectfully bowed to him, “Young Master.”
He wore a dark green lightweight down jacket, with everything else in black. Standing at six feet two inches tall, his handsome face made Wu Yunyun feel an overwhelming pressure as he stood before her.
Clutching the broom, she felt a tingle of nervousness under his gaze.
Gu Si Yi fixed his eyes on the woman before him. She was dressed in winter maid attire, her hair tied up in a small bun, and her fair face was fully visible. While she wasn’t the type to take one’s breath away at first glance, there was something about her that made it hard for him to look away.
For months, every time he returned home, he would deliberately seek her out but always found nothing. Even when he did see her, she would vanish without a trace shortly after. To him, it seemed like she was intentionally avoiding him.
“What do I have in common with Ji Sheng?” Gu Si Yi stepped closer to Wu Yunyun.
The proximity of his masculine presence made Wu Yunyun break into a cold sweat. She bent slightly at the waist, adopting a thoroughly humble posture. “I’m sorry, Young Master. What I said earlier was unintentional; please don’t take it to heart.”
Gu Si Yi looked at Wu Yunyun, clearly not intending to let her off easily. “This time I heard you directly. In the past, I didn’t know how many times you spoke ill of me behind my back.”
Startled, Wu Yunyun raised her head in shock, her mouth slightly agape as she struggled to find words for a defense. She gazed up at the towering man before her and fell silent, swallowing her words and the bitterness that came with them.
To her surprise, after all this time, he had become even more difficult than before.
Gu Si Yi observed Wu Yunyun’s expression and finally saw some life in it; she no longer wore that forced smile that masked her true feelings.
“Since you care so much about me,” he said, “starting tomorrow, you will stay in my courtyard. This way, you can get to know me better before making any conclusions.”
Wu Yunyun didn’t understand what Gu Si Yi meant. Hearing his words only left her feeling more confused.
She had come here to work because her mother insisted she find a job since she was struggling to do so herself; it was supposed to be a temporary arrangement.
After a month of living in fear and realizing that there would be no connection between them, she had finally relaxed. But now it seemed best not to dwell on what he meant; she had already apologized to him. If he couldn’t let it go, then that was just his small-mindedness.
With that thought in mind, Wu Yunyun bowed once more to Gu Si Yi and said, “Young Master, I’m sorry. I suddenly feel unwell; I need to go to the restroom.”
Although her excuse was poor, it did not stop her from running away the next moment. Wu Yunyun grabbed the mop and quickly dashed in the opposite direction. Only when she realized no one was chasing her did she stop and toss the mop aside.
She walked into the servant's quarters, reached her room, and quickly locked the door. Once the door was shut, she slumped onto her bed, gasping for breath. It was only when she was alone that she allowed those bitter emotions to surface.
She truly felt like a spineless person; just because Gu Si Yi was born with an attractive appearance, she had liked him since the first stirrings of her heart. The moments they shared together replayed in her mind repeatedly, especially on his birthday when he personally told her that they were not suited for each other.
That statement shattered her dreams. From that point on, every time she saw him again, she felt like a mouse encountering a cat. It was clear to her that she did not deserve him. She didn't want to hear him say those words a second time.
