Wu Yunyun's grandfather's surgery date was set for the sixth day of the new year. The old man remained optimistic, preparing the traditional goods for the upcoming festivities as usual.
On New Year's Eve, the family gathered around the dining table for a sumptuous reunion dinner. The Spring Festival Gala played on the television, and the elderly man watched with delight, while Wu Yunyun joined in, enjoying the show.
In her class group chat, someone sent out red envelopes, and many people rushed to grab them. Wu Yunyun felt a twinge of temptation but refrained from joining in. As she watched the scrolling blessings on her phone screen, she opened her chat with Gu Si Yi and wished him a Happy New Year!
In the next moment, Gu Si Yi initiated a video call. Wu Yunyun panicked and quickly declined. He sent her a question mark in response.
She typed back, explaining that she was with her grandparents and it wasn't very convenient. "Let me see you. It's been a while, and I've missed you."
Looking at her reflection in the phone camera, she noticed her oversized pajamas were a bit worn at the cuffs. She stood up to find a better angle, ensuring her face filled the screen before snapping a photo. After sending it to him, she waited but received no immediate reply.
Meanwhile, Gu Si Yi was in his hotel room, enlarging her photo on his phone. Her chin tilted towards him, her eyes crescent-shaped as she smiled sweetly. He opened his collection of emojis, contemplating sending her a kiss emoji but hesitated, fearing it might scare her.
"What did you eat tonight?" he eventually asked.
Wu Yunyun reported back enthusiastically that her favorite dish was the homemade Lap Cheong prepared by her grandmother. She sent him a picture and asked if he wanted to try some.
Not wanting to dampen her spirits, Gu Si Yi simply replied with an "Mm."
At midnight, as fireworks lit up the sky outside, Wu Yunyun grabbed her phone and took numerous photos. She sent them to Gu Si Yi with a playful message: "Gu Teacher, look at the fireworks!"
After sending it off, she waited for quite some time but eventually fell asleep without receiving a response.
The next morning, she woke up and checked her phone to find his reply: "Very beautiful."
It was just three short words, yet Wu Yunyun felt an overwhelming sense of joy.
Gu Si Yi's travels continued until just before school started again. Once Wu Yunyun's grandfather's surgery approached, she returned to Teikyo.
On the day he returned, he brought Wu Yunyun to the living room and, under the pretense of discussing a topic, gave her a bracelet. It was unique, made of shells.
"Put it on and try it without looking," he said.
Under his gaze, Wu Yunyun slipped the bracelet onto her wrist and shook it playfully. "How does it look? Can you see?"
Gu Si Yi nodded. "It looks great. The moment I saw it, I thought it suited you perfectly."
"Thank you," Wu Yunyun replied, her cheeks flushing as she dared not meet his eyes again.
That evening, she took a photo of the bracelet on her wrist and searched for its price on a shopping website. The number that popped up on the screen startled her.
In a panic, she jumped off the bed, opened her drawer, and carefully placed the bracelet into a small box. From that day on, she never wore the bracelet again, not even during the six months she spent with Gu Si Yi.
A month had passed since school started, and it was common knowledge that Gu Si Yi walked home with Wu Yunyun every day. Throughout this month, she had heard many speculations from those around her about how long her relationship with Gu Si Yi would last. She chose to ignore them, and gradually, those voices diminished significantly. However, she never expected that one day she would be cornered in the restroom by that woman, Han Hanyue.
