On Monday, as Wu Yunyun entered the school gate, she took a few deep breaths before finally stepping inside. She knew she would experience a withdrawal period regarding Gu Si Yi, but she had no idea how long it would last.
Yu Chan, Wu Yunyun's close friend, had already heard about her breakup. That evening, she eagerly asked about any developments, but was taken aback when Wu Yunyun revealed that they had already split. Although Yu Chan never thought highly of their relationship, she was still shocked to learn that Gu Si Yi had initiated the breakup.
What surprised her even more was Wu Yunyun's calm demeanor; she was unnaturally composed during the phone call and didn't speak ill of him at all. During class, Wu Yunyun found it hard to concentrate; she still couldn't ignore the curious gazes of her classmates. She thought to herself that it wouldn't be long before the entire school knew she had been dumped by Gu Si Yi.
Time moved faster than she expected. Within just three days, her classmates were already aware of her breakup with Gu Si Yi. A few pranksters even approached her to ask what it felt like to date him. However, before she could respond, Yu Chan shooed them away with her textbook.
Wu Yunyun felt grateful to have Yu Chan by her side during such times; without her, she would have struggled to maintain her composure in front of those people. That evening, as rain poured down in Dijing City, large raindrops pelted the ground accompanied by rumbling thunder. Standing in front of the teaching building, Wu Yunyun squeezed her backpack nervously.
Her backpack contained two umbrellas, and as for why she hadn't returned one of them, perhaps it was because she held onto a sliver of hope.
Han Hanyue approached the entrance of the teaching building and spotted Wu Yunyun preparing to leave with an umbrella. She quickly called out to her. Wu Yunyun instinctively paused and put away the umbrella just as Han Hanyue reached her side.
"Why are you still here so late?" Han Hanyue wondered aloud. She had been trying to catch up with Wu Yunyun for days and even waited an extra half hour after school for her.
"I wanted to finish my homework before heading home," Wu Yunyun replied vaguely. "Do you need anything? If not, I'm leaving."
Han Hanyue adjusted her hair and casually glanced into Wu Yunyun's open backpack, noticing the other umbrella. Pretending not to see it, she focused her gaze back on Wu Yunyun's face, though her earlier confidence had diminished significantly. "Let me be honest with you," she said. "Gu Si Yi was with you because of He Luan and his friends' antics; in a way, you were just a trophy for him."
That day after Gu Si Yi left, Sun Xian had blurted out the reason behind Gu Si Yi pursuing Wu Yunyun. Although he was quickly hushed by the other two friends, Han Hanyue still knew about it.
Seeing Wu Yunyun's pale expression made Han Hanyue's tone soften slightly. "Don't be too upset; I told you before that you two aren't meant for each other. It's better for you to realize this sooner rather than later."
"I don't believe it," Wu Yunyun quietly argued back. "Gu Si Yi isn't that kind of person. If he had such intentions from the start, then what were these days we spent together all about?"
"His buddies were there that day too; you can always ask them for confirmation."
After speaking, Han Hanyue stepped out and took the black umbrella handed to her by the driver, striding into the rain. Since childhood, she had been taught that when it came to someone she liked, she should do everything in her power to win them over. What she desired had always been within her reach; Gu Si Yi would definitely not be an exception!
Even when facing Wu Yunyun, her methods might seem a bit unscrupulous, but she would eventually have to step aside. From that perspective, she could consider her actions justified.
Wu Yunyun sat slumped on the ground, feeling a chill in her body. Even as she hugged herself tightly, she still felt no warmth. Despite her reluctance to accept it, she had to acknowledge the truth. His previous indifference towards her finally made sense. It turned out that this relationship had always been a one-woman show for her; to him, she was merely a joke.
