Wu Yunyun returned to Teikyo during the winter break of her first year in high school. During the Spring Festival, it happened that Wu's Mother was on duty, so her grandparents asked Wu Yunyun to bring some goods to Teikyo for her.
Wu Yunyun had cut her hair short in advance and packed some cured meats, Lap Cheong, along with some local specialties from Yun Cheng before heading to Teikyo. Along the way, she deliberately avoided thinking about Gu Si Yi and instead found a novel on her phone to pass the time.
Upon arriving at her residence, Wu Yunyun placed the food she brought in the kitchen and lay down on her bed. Soon, her phone chimed with notifications; she opened it to find a message from Yu Chan asking when she was free to come over and play. Wu Yunyun agreed on a time and continued lounging in bed.
As she browsed through her WeChat contacts, she couldn’t help but click on Gu Si Yi's profile several times during the quiet nights. She realized he had blocked her, yet she felt compelled to check his moments, needing to see for herself that she could no longer view them. Initially, she thought she would quickly forget him since she was the one who had been hurt. However, he appeared in her dreams multiple times, and upon waking, she couldn’t recall the details but felt a sense of healing.
Perhaps it was that sporadic affection that kept him lingering in her mind. At eight in the evening, Wu's Mother returned home with several packed dishes. She looked at her daughter and hugged her tightly, marveling at how much taller she had grown.
The two shared some intimate conversations before inevitably landing on Wu Yunyun's academic performance. When Wu Yunyun pulled out her report card, Wu's Mother's smile widened even more upon seeing it.
"Being in the top five is great, but you can't let your guard down," she said. "I asked your teachers about you; with these grades, getting into a prestigious school won’t be a problem. This is just your first year; there are still two years until graduation. Once you get into college, that’s when we’ll know we’ve made it."
Wu's Mother set down the report card and continued, "I know I’ve been a bit strict with you, but remember: endure hardship before enjoying sweetness. One day you'll understand my good intentions."
Wu Yunyun nodded. She didn’t know if there would be sweetness ahead; all she knew was that she couldn’t go against her mother’s wishes. After all, in front of her mother, she felt like she had no say.
Often, she sensed a distance between herself and her mother; it seemed like all that mattered to her was academic performance. It felt as if if her grades slipped, her mother would abandon her without hesitation.
During dinner, Wu's Mother shifted the conversation to Gu Si Yi, mentioning that he would soon face school selection issues and that his grades might allow him to study abroad. While Wu Yunyun was busy picking fish bones at that moment, she pricked herself and calmly took a few sips of water.
Wu's Mother continued talking about Gu Si Yi with admiration in her eyes, saying how Mrs. Gu and Mr. Gu should cherish such a good child.
"You said it would be great if you continued to stay at Teikyo. Although Young Master Ji Xiao can be a bit stubborn, he is quite warm-hearted. When he offered to help you with your studies, you really should have taken him up on it."
"By the way, Young Master asked about you later. I told him you went back to your Maternal Grandparents' Home. It's clear that he truly treats you like a sister."
Wu Yunyun suppressed the complex emotions rising in her heart and spoke somewhat stiffly, "Mom, I will work hard in my studies from now on and strive to get into a good school."
"As long as you're willing to put in the effort, that's good."
With that, the topic finally came to an end. Wu Yunyun had wanted to discuss some other trivial matters, but now she found herself at a loss for words. After finishing the meal, she felt as if she might suffer from indigestion.
After dinner, she felt quite bloated.
