After Wu Yunyun got together with Gu Si Yi, she became increasingly cheerful. Their son was born in the second year after their marriage. His name was Gu Huai, and his nickname was Fu Zai.
On Fu Zai's third birthday, while visiting his grandmother at the old house, he accidentally rummaged through his mother's old phone. He held the worn-out device, banging it on the table with a clatter.
Seeing what Fu Zai had in his hands, Wu Yunyun quickly walked over and gently said to her son, "Fu Zai, can you give that to Mommy, please?"
Fu Zai tightly clutched the phone in his small chubby hands, his eyes filled with caution. "If you give it to Mommy, she'll take you to the zoo to see the bears."
Upon hearing this, Fu Zai's eyes lit up, and he obediently handed the phone over to Wu Yunyun.
As Wu Yunyun took the phone, a rush of memories flooded back to her—this was the birthday gift she had prepared for him back then, which he had never unwrapped. She went to find a charging cable and plugged in the phone. Waiting by the side, she felt a bit excited about how Gu Si Yi would react when he saw it.
Fu Zai came bouncing over and asked his mother why she was smiling. Wu Yunyun lifted him onto her lap and replied, "Mommy is very happy."
Fu Zai poked Wu Yunyun's cheek and asked, "What is happiness?"
Wu Yunyun thought for a moment before responding, "Happiness is when Daddy loves us very much. For example, doesn't Daddy often cuddle with us and make us lots of delicious food? That’s happiness."
Fu Zai's little face scrunched up; he realized he didn’t cuddle with Daddy very often, and all his meals were prepared by the aunt at home. Thinking this way made him feel like he wasn’t really happy.
Meanwhile, Gu Si Yi was in the kitchen preparing dinner. Standing at the bedroom door, he listened as Wu Yunyun spoke about her happiness. This year, she never stopped saying how happy she was.
He felt the same way; ever since being with her, he had been full of energy every day. Even others remarked that he looked much younger.
Gu Si Yi entered the room and embraced Wu Yunyun. "Honey, your favorite beer duck is ready."
"Thank you, dear." Wu Yunyun planted a kiss on Gu Si Yi's cheek.
"This phone—I remember you used it back in middle school, right?" Gu Si Yi picked up the charging phone and noticed many childish stickers still stuck on its back.
"Yes! And I have a surprise for you later," Wu Yunyun said mysteriously as she winked at him.
"Then I'll thank my wife in advance." Gu Si Yi held her tighter; her body was soft and comforting to embrace.
Wu's Mother came over to call them for dinner, and the sight before her was this very scene. At first, she felt a bit uncomfortable, but now she could face it calmly.
"You all, come eat!" Wu's Mother called out.
"Coming, Grandma!" Fu Zai exclaimed as he wriggled free from Wu Yunyun's arms and scampered over with little steps.
Wu's Mother lifted Fu Zai onto the children's chair. Looking at her grandson, she felt more and more pleased. She couldn't help but think how foolish she had been to persuade her daughter to give up such an excellent son-in-law.
Her grandson looked just like Gu Si Yi, almost as if he were carved from the same mold; the more she looked, the more she liked him.
At the dining table, Gu Si Yi placed a duck leg in Wu's Mother's bowl. "Mom, you eat this."
"Thank you, Xiao Gu," Wu's Mother said, her smile so wide it seemed it might split her face.
Gu Si Yi then put another duck leg in Wu Yunyun's bowl.
"Thank you, husband," Wu Yunyun said before diving into her meal.
Fu Zai waited for a while but saw nothing in his bowl. He pouted and looked up at Gu Si Yi with a pitiful expression. "Daddy, I want some too."
"Okay, here you go." Gu Si Yi picked up a duck neck and placed it in Fu Zai's bowl. "This is one of the best parts of the duck; many shops sell just this. Give it a try!"
Hearing this, Fu Zai happily grabbed the duck neck and started munching on it.
After dinner, Wu's Mother took Wu Yunyun aside to apologize. "Wu Yunyun, I was wrong before; I was too extreme. I hope you can forgive me."
"Now that I see you three living so well together, I can rest easy."
It was the first time Wu Yunyun had seen her mother apologize, and she felt a bit unaccustomed to it. After a moment, she replied, "Mom, it's okay; what's past is past."
She should be thanking Gu Si Yi for treating her well after their marriage, which had changed her mother's attitude.
She could imagine that someone with her mother's personality would have nagged her endlessly if her marriage had been unhappy because she didn't listen to her advice.
"Yes, Xiao Gu enrolled me in an elderly university. Recently, I've been meeting new people. Your mother used to have such a narrow perspective."
"Mom, I'm really happy that you can have your own life."
In the end, the two women embraced each other.
On the way home, Wu Yunyun held Gu Si Yi's hand and said, "My mom apologized to me today. She opposed our marriage back then, but now she clearly recognizes her mistakes."
Gu Si Yi held her hand tightly, feeling relieved that she had come to terms with everything.
It was all for you. My mom sees me living happily, so she won’t say much anymore.
“Alright, Wu Yunyun, I will continue to keep this up,” he promised.
Gu Si Yi kissed Wu Yunyun's hand gently.
Fu Zai sat in the backseat in his child seat, his beautiful eyes darting between his father and mother. Finally, he excitedly clapped his chubby little hands.
That night, Wu Yunyun’s old phone finally charged up. Before bed, she called Gu Si Yi over. He wrapped her in his arms.
“Are you ready to see the surprise I prepared for you?” Wu Yunyun asked.
Gu Si Yi kissed her forehead and replied, “Of course.”
Wu Yunyun opened her phone's photo album, selected a video, and hit play.
Gu Si Yi watched as she handed him the phone. In the video, someone dressed as a Teddy Bear was dancing for him. After finishing the dance, the person took off the headpiece and said to him, “Happy Birthday!” The video ended precisely at two minutes and twenty seconds.
After watching it, Gu Si Yi’s warm eyes glistened with tears. He tightened his grip on Wu Yunyun’s shoulders, realizing that all the grievances he had endured before didn’t matter anymore.
It turned out that many years ago, he had already received this girl’s complete affection; it was he who had let it slip away.
Fortunately, fate had been kind to him, and she ultimately returned to his side. For the rest of their lives, he would continue to prove through his actions that he loved her. He would not let her lose.
