On May 20th, the sky was overcast. Wu Yunyun noticed her friends on social media showing off their affection since the start of her workday, and she couldn't help but wonder what Gu Si Yi might have prepared for her.
Once that thought crossed her mind, she found it hard to focus on her work. Finally, when it was time to leave, she grabbed her helmet and prepared to head out. The ride to Gu Si Yi's apartment would only take about twenty minutes, but unexpectedly, it started to rain halfway there. She tightened her grip on the handlebars and decided to head home instead, but still ended up getting wet.
After parking her electric bike, Wu Yunyun hurried into her room and dashed to the bathroom for a shower. Gu Si Yi hadn't returned yet, and as she washed up, she contemplated whether she should wear a dress later.
Once she finished showering and dried her hair, she rummaged through her closet and found the pink dress that Gu Si Yi had recently bought for her. She changed into it and headed downstairs, waiting for him while binge-watching a show, having skipped dinner.
An hour later, just as Wu Yunyun's stomach began to growl from hunger, Gu Si Yi finally came home. She approached him and noticed his empty hands, trying to maintain a calm demeanor. "You're back?"
"Yeah, the rain was heavy today, and there was some traffic," he replied, glancing at her in the pink dress. "Did something good happen today?"
Wu Yunyun shook her head. "Not really. I just got wet earlier and grabbed whatever I could find in the closet to change." She looked at him curiously. "What's wrong? Does it not look good?"
Gu Si Yi pulled her into his arms and spun her around. "You look beautiful."
As soon as he set her down, they both heard a rumble from her stomach.
"Are you hungry?" he asked.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Wu Yunyun nodded.
Gu Si Yi took off his outerwear and rolled up his sleeves. "Have some bread while I cook in the kitchen."
"Okay." Wu Yunyun watched his retreating figure with mixed emotions.
Little did he know that just moments ago, she had been on an emotional rollercoaster because of him. It dawned on her that her actions today reflected a growing expectation towards him. In this relationship with a deadline looming over them, such feelings felt irrational.
Moreover, seeing his demeanor made it clear that he wasn't fond of celebrating trivial occasions; in fact, he didn't even realize today was one of those days. To be honest, during their time together, he had given her so much—both materially and emotionally—that she felt cherished in ways she hadn't anticipated.
It was her own doing, having become arrogant from being favored. This time, it rang in her ears like a warning bell.
She lay on the sofa, opened the calendar, and saw that there was still less than a month left until the deadline. It was time to slowly pull her heart back.
Gu Si Yi made seafood porridge for the two of them and stir-fried a couple of light dishes. When he was about to serve the porridge, Wu Yunyun hugged him from behind and said, "Thank you, Gu Si Yi."
Gu Si Yi didn’t notice anything unusual in her tone and held her hands in his. "What are you thanking me for? It's almost time to eat; I'm afraid you'll faint from hunger."
"Okay." Wu Yunyun helped by getting the bowls and chopsticks.
Before they started eating, she secretly took a photo with her phone. Gu Si Yi noticed her actions and asked, "Why do you want to take a picture?"
"It just looks so appetizing," Wu Yunyun replied as she put her phone away and began to eat.
Gu Si Yi didn’t say much more; he placed shrimp into her bowl and urged, "Eat up."
"Okay." Wu Yunyun picked up a shrimp and chewed it slowly. "It's really delicious! Gu Si Yi, how are you so amazing?" A sweet smile spread across her lips.
Gu Si Yi didn’t eat much during the meal; he kept observing her, feeling that her emotions were a bit too overt. He felt uneasy.
Before bed, Gu Si Yi wrapped his arms around her waist from behind and kissed her ear.
Wu Yunyun had intended to sleep well but found herself becoming increasingly restless under his touch. "Gu Si Yi," she called out to him, her tone laced with a playful sweetness.
"I'm here." Gu Si Yi enveloped her completely.
In the early hours of the morning, Gu Si Yi watched Wu Yunyun's serene sleeping face, unable to fall asleep himself.
