"Let go of me!" Leng Mei scolded, and I frowned, not denying it. "So that's how it is? Just hand it over."
Feeling a bit frustrated, I said coldly, "This doesn't feel good, like seeing a cow cover a pristine flower with its own dung."
"Identification?" Leng Mei turned around, raising an eyebrow at me, her expression icy. It was clear she was reluctant to return the wallet. I frowned again and said, "The wallet."
"What if I don't give it back?" she asked, looking at me.
I smiled and replied, "Then I'll drag you to the police station."
"You're such a goody-two-shoes!"
Perhaps realizing her predicament, she sighed helplessly and pulled out a black leather wallet, handing it to me. I took the wallet and tossed it back to the three men, saying, "Get lost!"
One of them caught the wallet without uttering a word and left in a huff. They weren't good people; I took their money, and they deserved it!
I heard Leng Mei's voice behind me. I smiled and said, "I figured that out, but this isn't the right way to handle things. Goodbye."
As I turned to leave, I didn't doubt her claim that those three weren't good people. If they were decent, they would have told me from the start that she stole their wallet. But they didn't say anything; it was clear they wanted to deal with it themselves. After all, how many opportunities does one get to deal with a beautiful woman?
"Hey! Wait a minute! You're just going to give away the fruits of my labor like that? You can't just walk away!" Leng Mei's voice called out from behind.
I paused in confusion. What kind of twisted logic was this? I caught a thief and returned the stolen item to its owner, yet now she was blaming me for ruining her hard work?
"What else should I do?" I asked incredulously as I turned back to face her.
"You owe me a meal!" Leng Mei declared matter-of-factly.
"What?"
I was genuinely surprised and couldn't help but laugh helplessly. This was the first time I'd encountered such a situation. I had no intention of getting entangled with this peculiar girl any further and turned to leave.
Suddenly, my stomach growled loudly. I glanced back to see Leng Mei clutching her stomach with a pitiful expression, her little eyes casting a resentful glance at me.
"You don’t have any money for food, do you?"
I was a bit surprised when Leng Mei blushed after hearing that and nodded without saying anything. I chuckled helplessly; I could ignore a thief, but I couldn't just watch a beautiful woman go hungry.
"Let's go then, I'll treat you to a meal," I said as I led Leng Mei into the bar. At that moment, I began to understand her actions. After all, one could starve if they didn't eat, and in such a situation, choosing to steal from someone bad indicated that she wasn't truly a bad person—just a woman who had fallen on hard times.
Once inside the bar, my friend noticed me and pointed, ready to lecture me. He probably wanted to say something about how I had let the last applicant slip away. But when he saw that I had brought a woman with me, he immediately retracted his haughty finger and exclaimed, "Nice one, brother! She's quite something!"
I smiled and pretended to be modest, saying, "She's alright." Showing off was my hobby; sometimes when life got frustrating, it helped relieve stress. Then my friend asked, "How much?"
"What did you just say?"
Before I could react, Leng Mei slapped him across the face. He was taken aback.
"Misunderstanding! Misunderstanding!" I quickly interjected. I knew Leng Mei thought he was implying she was a prostitute and asking for her price. My friend was confused too, but I didn't have time to deal with him. I shot him a look and said, "You brought this on yourself!"
Then I took Leng Mei's hand and left. Behind us, I heard my friend's disgruntled voice, but I didn't linger; once I was done venting, I was out of there—no need for any further entanglements to avoid conflict.
"Let go of me! I'm not a prostitute!"
Once we were outside the bar, Leng Mei shook off my hand and frowned unhappily. I smiled gently; the reason I held her hand was simply to prevent her from arguing with my friend.
"I know you're not," I reassured her. "And I'm not a client; I just wanted to treat you to a meal. Would you allow me that honor?"
I looked at Leng Mei with a friendly smile. Regardless of what had just happened, it was my friend's fault for creating that misunderstanding. Everyone deserves respect, and at that moment, I wanted to show this woman in need some kindness.
Leng Mei paused for a moment before breaking into a smile and nodding. "Alright then, I'll accept your invitation."
We went to a small restaurant where she ordered quite a bit of food and started eating ravenously. Watching her devour her meal made it clear she was starving. At that moment, I couldn't help but feel sympathy for Leng Mei; what could have possibly led such a beautiful girl to this state?
As we ate, I tried to engage her in conversation and asked for her name. She initially ignored me—not because she was aloof but because she was too busy eating. It wasn't until she finished that she finally responded.
"My name is Linna," she said. "I've only stolen once—just that wallet—because I was really starving. Those three guys weren't good people; they were bullying someone right in front of me. That's why I thought of stealing their wallet."
Linna explained her situation, and after listening, I nodded in understanding—it matched my suspicions pretty closely. Then I asked, "What led you to not even have money for food? Don't you have a job?"
Linna glanced at me after hearing my words, and I could see the sadness in her eyes. Then she said nothing and simply stood up to leave. It seemed there was something she couldn't express, a story behind her.
I didn't say anything either. My past experiences in the police academy and as an undercover agent had given me some ability to read people, and I could tell that this girl wasn't lying.
After settling the bill, I walked out of the restaurant and saw Linna waiting for me at the entrance. I smiled and teased, "What’s this? After treating me to a meal, are you going to treat me to a place to stay as well?"
"Yes," she nodded, her cheeks slightly flushed. I couldn't help but laugh; she really was offering me a place to stay? I decided to have a little fun with her and said, "Aren't you afraid I'm a bad guy?"
"You’re a good person; I know," Linna replied seriously, looking at me with her sparkling eyes. I chuckled; it was amusing how friendly I seemed to her—she wasn’t even scared of me!
"But if you dare to have any funny ideas about me, just know that you might not be able to handle me; I'll take care of you!"
Before I could fully enjoy the moment, Linna suddenly said this, catching me off guard. I turned back to look at her and saw a determined expression on her face.
That statement doesn’t quite match your demeanor, I thought. I was speechless for a moment; it seemed Linna might actually be someone capable of defending herself. I recalled how she had faced three burly men in the backyard without fear. Even if I hadn’t intervened, she might have been able to handle them on her own—she clearly had the ability to protect herself.
Linna paused for a moment and then broke into a smile like a blooming flower. I realized that making this cold beauty smile was quite an enjoyable task.
I took Linna back to my rented apartment. Since I worked in real estate, I managed to find a reasonably priced place. My apartment wasn’t large—just one bedroom and one living room—but it was cozy despite being somewhat worn down, costing only two thousand four hundred yuan per month due to its slightly remote location.
"Hey, can we discuss something?" I asked as I walked into the bedroom where Linna was changing the sheets. The room was small, less than ten square meters, but it felt warm and inviting, especially with a woman in it changing the sheets. It was a feeling I had never experienced before.
Linna turned back cautiously and unexpectedly said, "No way; there’s nothing to discuss."
What?! I was left speechless. How could she be so heartless? Just because I wanted to discuss something?
