Suddenly, Linna opened her eyes!
Ah! Damn it!
I quickly covered Linna's mouth; my mom was still outside!
"Keep it down! My mom!" I whispered in Linna's ear. To my surprise, Linna had quite a bit of strength and pushed me away, her face flushed with anger.
"What’s wrong? What’s going on?"
My mom's worried voice came from outside, but I knew she wouldn’t rush in. I quickly replied, "Nothing, just a cockroach! Xiaoli, don’t make a fuss over nothing!"
I pointed at Linna and then at my bedding, making it clear that this was my territory. It was her who intruded into my space, so she shouldn’t look at me like I was some kind of pervert. I was innocent!
Linna glanced at her own bed and her face turned even redder. Still, she shot me a glare, clearly not in the mood to reason.
"I’m telling you, you broke your promise! I’ll tell your mom!"
Linna pointed at me and said this in a low voice before getting up to leave the room. Oh no! I quickly wrapped my arms around her legs—smooth as they were!
"Don’t make a scene! Don’t make a scene! I didn’t mean it; just give me one chance."
I gritted my teeth and growled. It was infuriating—how old were we? Threatening to tell on each other?
Linna looked down at me, and I helplessly forced a sincere smile at her. To my surprise, she actually smiled back—though it was more of a cold smirk.
"Well, you have to promise me one thing!"
Linna said with a smirk. My eyebrows raised; was she using this opportunity to negotiate? Heh, I could play that game too!
"Sure, no problem."
I replied, and upon hearing this, Linna shook off my grip on her leg. I shot her an annoyed glance; it was the only way I could vent my frustration at the moment. There was nothing I could do—she held the knife while I was the fish on the chopping board!
"And don’t say I’m not being fair. Didn’t you go to police academy before? I’m giving you a chance to get rich; what do you think?"
Linna looked at me as she spoke. In that instant, I remembered my superior Zhang Peng from back in the day when he had asked me to go undercover. He had promised me an opportunity for a commendation then—did I want it?
"That’s not anything good!"
That was my first reaction. I didn’t even know Linna’s background; she couldn’t even afford to feed herself—what kind of opportunity could she offer me? It definitely wasn’t anything good!
"Is this really necessary? How about this: I'll give you an extra hundred a day as a token of my apology."
I said to Linna, but she merely chuckled lightly, her delicate face showing clear disdain. "I'm serious. I can make you one of the top tycoons in this city! Are you in or not?"
A top tycoon?
I was taken aback; that was quite a bold claim. A tycoon in the capital? Could a girl who couldn't even afford a meal really pull that off?
"Have you heard of Tian Ye Gang?" Linna asked with a smile. "The owner of Tian Ye Gang is my dad!"
I was stunned for a moment.
Tian Ye Gang?
It was one of the most prestigious entertainment groups in the capital and even the entire country! I had heard that in its early days, the chairman, Lin Tianfeng, had built his fortune through shady dealings, but over time he had moved away from that and engaged in philanthropy.
However, despite distancing himself from illegal activities, many former associates still worked within Tian Ye Gang's entertainment sector, occasionally dealing with matters that were best left untouched.
"Come on, don't joke with me. You're the little princess of Tian Ye Gang? And yet you can't even afford a meal? What nonsense are you talking about?" I laughed lightly. Who would believe such a story? How wealthy was Lin Tianfeng? No one really knew! Could he let his daughter starve and resort to stealing wallets to eat?
"You can look it up on Baidu to see if I'm telling the truth," Linna said cheerfully.
I raised an eyebrow at her demeanor; she didn't seem like she was lying at all. I quickly pulled out my phone and searched for Lin Tianfeng!
The information revealed that Lin Tianfeng had one son and one daughter: his son was twenty-seven years old, named Lin Peng, and his daughter was twenty-two years old—Linna!
I opened Linna's profile. No way! It really was this Linna beside me!
What is going on here?
I was instantly bewildered. Linna was indeed Lin Tianfeng's daughter. So what had happened to her?
"In fact, my parents and brother have all died," she said coldly. "The news has been suppressed by others and hasn't spread yet. The family business of the Lin family has been taken over!"
I was shocked by her words.
"When did this happen?"
"A month ago," she replied flatly. "When I just returned to the country, my dad and brother were suddenly assassinated. My dad died in the attack, and my brother died trying to protect me."
Linna's eyes were icy as she spoke, and my mind buzzed with disbelief at such a significant event occurring without my knowledge.
As I was escaping, my brother told me that all the assets of the Lin family had been transferred to the name of the person who harmed them. He didn’t tell me who that person was and urged me to leave Kyoto and live my life without seeking revenge. But I couldn't accept that! I wanted vengeance! I spent a month in Kyoto, but I found nothing. I needed help.
Linna looked at me with determination, her big, watery eyes filled with tears. I couldn’t imagine what this girl, who once lived like a princess, had gone through in the past month, but I knew it must have been brutal.
What she said struck a chord with me; her brother was doing it all for her. Now that Tian Ye Gang was under enemy control, it was a miracle they hadn’t come after Linna yet. But if she showed her head, wouldn’t that mean certain death for her?
But what could I do to help? I was just a nobody, and your opponent now controlled the vast Tian Ye Gang. Even if I tried to assist you, we wouldn’t stand a chance together.
Though my heart ached for her, it didn’t mean I wasn’t using my brain. With my current abilities, going up against them would be like throwing myself into an electric current. I was just an ant; they were giants!
I didn’t suggest you fight them head-on. Haven't you been to police academy and mingled in society? Have you ever done undercover work? You could infiltrate Tian Ye Gang and gather evidence of their crimes. They would definitely be committing crimes.
