"Are you new here?"
This was my first time seeing Wang Meng. He stood about 1.75 meters tall, looking somewhat slender and not imposing at all. His triangular eyes had a sly glint to them.
"I'm sorry, Manager. I didn't mean to," I said, feigning nervousness. Wang Meng nodded after hearing me and told the woman, "It's fine. You can go now. I'll make sure to educate this person; he can't just scare you like that."
The woman giggled and nodded before turning to leave. As she walked away, Wang Meng gave her a playful pinch on her ample backside, eliciting a squeal from her as she called him "naughty." Quite cheeky!
Wang Meng chuckled a few times, watching her leave, then turned to me and said, "Come to my office."
With that, he turned and walked away. I thought to myself, "Damn it, he's going to deal with me!" A visit to Wang Meng's office might not be so bad after all; if I wanted to steal evidence, it would definitely be in his office!
I followed Wang Meng into his office. It was impressive—spacious with high-end furniture and sofas. On his desk, I noticed a green ledger with a fountain pen lying uncapped beside it. Clearly, he had been working on accounts when the woman screamed.
This ledger was exactly what I wanted!
I also saw that the third drawer of Wang Meng's desk had a key in it. No doubt, this ledger had come from that drawer.
Just as I was thinking about this, Wang Meng suddenly slapped me hard across the face and without saying a word, began to beat me up!
I pretended to act normal and kept saying, "I'm sorry, Manager." Wang Meng remained silent but relentless in his assault. He slapped my face several times and punched my stomach repeatedly.
Although in reality, he couldn't really hurt me; I didn't fight back. Retaliating would do me no good—it would only complicate things. My goal was to gather evidence against Wang Meng!
In due time, I'd deal with him.
"You damn fool! This is a lesson for you! Pay attention when you're working! This is Tianchi! The Tian Ye Group! Do you understand?"
Wang Meng hit me for about five minutes. His strikes weren't very powerful; such small matters were nothing compared to what I had faced during my undercover days.
That didn’t mean I held no grudges—he had slapped me four times and thrown eight punches along with a kick!
"I understand now; I'm really sorry, Manager," I kept apologizing. Wang Meng smiled lightly after hearing this, waved his hand dismissively as if telling me to leave. So I did. Although I took a beating, it wasn’t entirely in vain; I had confirmed that Wang Meng indeed had something shady going on and learned the location of the ledger.
Next step: stealing that ledger!
Without a key, I recalled Liu Zi. He had once told me how tough his life was; he got involved with a gang at sixteen and was trained by their leader to become a thief!
If I could get Liuzi to help me steal the key, wouldn’t that make things much easier?
As I continued my work throughout the day, I noticed that the other employees were indifferent to my situation after getting beaten up. Xiao Huang even scolded me, questioning how I could dare to offend Manager Wang. Honestly, it felt like I was done for.
Soon enough, I became like a knife—someone nobody wanted around. But I didn’t mind; how long could they bully me anyway? It shouldn’t be for long!
Dong Ge, you better watch out in the future. The manager is not someone to mess with; they’ve all been in the underworld before.
Before clocking out, Xiao Dao reminded me of this. I smiled and patted his shoulder, not saying much. There was a sense of camaraderie between us now.
After work, instead of heading home, I went straight to Liuzi’s bar. The moment Liuzi saw my bruised face and several handprint marks, he became alarmed.
“What the hell! Brother! What happened? Who hit you?”
Liuzi rushed over to check my injuries. We had a pretty good relationship, so I smiled warmly and patted his shoulder.
“It’s nothing. Just got hit by our new boss. No big deal. I actually came here to ask for your help.”
“New boss? You got a new boss?”
Liuzi paused for a moment before shouting that he would get revenge on the real estate company for me. He didn’t even know I had changed jobs yet. I stopped him and explained that it was someone from Tian Ye Group who hit me.
Liuzi was taken aback. “Tian Ye Group? You know their strength; we can’t mess with them.”
“How did you get involved with Tian Ye Group? Did you take that job just because you needed money so badly?” Liuzi asked in confusion. The pay at Tian Ye Group was high, which was why they bullied Xiao Dao, who still wouldn’t leave.
I chuckled and told Liuzi that explaining it would take too long. Instead, I asked if he would help me or not.
Liuzi paused for a moment without asking further questions and sighed helplessly. “If you need my help, how could I refuse? Just tell me what you need.”
“Help me steal a key!”
I then explained to Liuzi that I wanted Wang Meng’s key. He frowned upon hearing this and asked what it was for since Tian Ye Group wasn’t someone to provoke lightly. I didn’t want to burden Liuzi with too many details; it wouldn’t do him any good. After thinking it over, he agreed to help me.
I was thrilled; having a brother like him made all the difference! If I succeeded in the future, I would definitely remember my brother!
That night, Liuzi kept asking what my plan was, but I didn’t share much with him. After discussing our action plan, I headed home.
On the way back, I wondered if Linna was still doing yoga. Maybe I should buy her a set of yoga clothes; wearing my shirt all the time couldn’t be comfortable for her.
Just as that thought crossed my mind, I dismissed it! Why buy yoga clothes? If I did that, I wouldn’t get to see Linna doing yoga in my shirt anymore—what a tempting sight! Oh boy, just thinking about it made my heart race.
Thinking about it, I returned home, and sure enough! Linna was doing yoga in my shirt. The black fabric gave her a mysterious vibe, and her fair calves peeked out, which was quite tempting!
"Hey! What happened to you?"
As soon as I stepped inside, Linna noticed the bruises on my face and immediately asked with concern. I smiled and pretended to be nonchalant; no matter the occasion or form, I could always put on a show!
I had taken risks today, but thankfully, I accomplished my mission and gathered some important intel. I sat on the sofa like a triumphant soldier, while Linna frowned at me, indicating that she wanted me to continue.
"Guess what I found out?"
I continued to smile, teasing her as part of my act.
"What?"
Linna furrowed her brow further, looking rather displeased. This puzzled me; surely once I revealed the information, she would be happy!
"I found out where Wang Meng's ledger is! And I'm confident I can steal it!"
I said proudly, but to my surprise, there was no change in Linna's expression. What was going on? Was she not happy about this progress?
"This is the intel you got? I thought you were promoted to general manager! You put yourself in this state for such trivial matters? Have you lost your mind?"
Linna questioned me loudly. I was taken aback; had my act failed?
In that moment, I laughed. It felt incredibly heartwarming—was Linna actually worried about me? After all those years as an undercover agent and two years in Kyoto filled with hardships, no one had ever cared for me or understood my struggles.
I couldn’t even express it! All the suffering had to be buried deep within me. At this point, I didn’t even feel sorry for myself anymore; I had grown accustomed to it. A little injury like this didn’t seem like a big deal at all.
It’s good to have a wife like her!
Looking at Linna’s frowning face made me feel elated. I pulled her into my arms without giving her a chance to react, and then pressed my lips against hers—her soft, rosy lips!
