Xie Bian said he wanted to eat beef tongue for lunch because he had another argument with A Bang that morning.
Xie Bian is a person who is generally good, but has a fiery temper. Within just two or three sentences of conversation, he would roll up his sleeves, ready to fight. In the entire Difu, aside from a few kings of hell, almost everyone has sparred with him at some point.
I forgot to mention that Xie Bian is Bai Wuchang, the Bai Wuchang from Heibai Wuchang. However, Difu is not limited to just the two Wuchang; the other minor Heibai Wuchang all fall under the command of Xie Bian and Hei Wuchang, Fan Wu Jiu.
I never imagined that one day I would marry Bai Wuchang. When I was alive, my mother always warned me, "Children who don’t sleep well, don’t eat properly, and don’t listen to their parents will be taken away by the Wuchang Ghost."
It felt like a threat, yet we all believed it wholeheartedly.
I had seen the statues of the Wuchang before. Every year, my mother would take me to the largest temple in the Ruian Dynasty—Jialan Temple—to pray.
There is a Wuchang Hall in the temple. Once, I accidentally wandered in and looked up to see the statue of Heibai Wuchang with its long tongue. Before I could take a closer look, I was so frightened that my legs went weak and I fainted, only remembering the long blood-red tongue and two pale faces in that eerie hall.
That impression was so deep that when I first met Xie Bian, I couldn’t connect this strong, handsome man with an expressionless face to the legendary soul-harvesting Bai Wuchang. Instead, I foolishly grabbed onto him as if he were a lifeline and never let go.
Later, I shared this story as a joke with Xie Bian. At that time, he merely smiled slightly and gently kissed my ear.
The next day, however, he stormed into Jialan Temple and smashed up the Wuchang Hall.
Fan Wu Jiu criticized him for being ungracious and not inviting him along, which led to a fight between them.
Xie Bian and Fan Wu Jiu work separately—one during the day and the other at night.
Today, Xie Bian left early in the morning to meet with Fan Wu Jiu. However, by the time it was mid-morning, Xiao Wuchang rushed in, flustered, to report that he had gotten into a fight with A Bang.
A Bang is Ox-Head, yes, the Ox-Head from the pair of Ox-Head and Horse-Face.
There’s no need to elaborate on his appearance; what’s crucial is that his temper is as stubborn as a bull. He gets riled up easily and doesn’t think things through. Coupled with Xie Bian's own fiery temperament, it’s no surprise that they clashed over something trivial.
As a result, I often found myself, at Xie Bian's behest, racking my brains to come up with various beef dishes: braised beef brisket, boiled beef slices, spicy beef tendons, and spicy beef tripe... all to comfort—or rather, to congratulate—Xie Bian for once again coming out on top in his "confrontation" with Ox-Head.
After some thought, I realized that beef tongue was rather unappetizing. Moreover, if A Bang found out, it would surely cause chaos in Difu, which was not in line with the virtuous wife and mother image I always aimed to present.
Eventually, I took it upon myself to change the lunch menu to Scrambled Egg Beef Congee as a small punishment for Xie Bian. I paired it with a few refreshing side dishes—healthy and nutritious. Just thinking about it made me happy.
I had a light snack myself and noticed there was still plenty of time left. With a spring in my step, I headed toward Cuiyun Palace.
I often dreamt of Mu Liushang for several consecutive days.
In my dreams, Mu Liushang stood by coldly watching me fall off a cliff.
His expression was devoid of emotion; not even a hint of pity was shown. No matter how desperately I called out his name, he remained unmoved.
I woke up from the dream and turned to see Xie Bian's peaceful sleeping face. Gently, I reached out my hand and traced his brow, nose, and lips slowly. Gradually, my heart began to calm.
This is my husband; this is my Xie Bian; this is the person I will be with for all eternity.
I buried my head in his chest and fell into a deep sleep once again.
