It was said that Rao Jie was going to study in the UK with Wu Rong to start anew. Mother Wu looked at Rao Jie with stars in her eyes, truly a wonderful daughter-in-law.
Encouraged by Wu Xin, Rao Jie decided to make desserts for everyone. She carefully prepared several of her best dishes, and everyone enjoyed them with smiles on their faces. Even Father Wu, who usually didn't like sweets, graciously ate two pieces and praised Rao Jie for her thoughtfulness. Knowing that Father Wu didn't eat sweet foods, Rao Jie had prepared coffee-flavored desserts that were not too sweet for him.
Mother Wu happily said, "Is there really a need to study? You could just open a shop near Wu Rong's school; it would definitely be a hit, and you could have a chain in just a few years. If you want to open a shop, just tell me, and your parents will help you with the funding."
Wu Rong raised an eyebrow and replied, "My wife wants to open a shop; would she go over my head to ask you for money? Do you look down on your son?"
Mother Wu shot him a sideways glance and said, "What do you know? The meaning is different."
Wu Xin laughed and added, "I get it; this is a dowry for Jie Jie! So brother, don’t stop it; this is our parents' intention towards Jie Jie."
It turned out that the Wu Family Parents had such plans. Although they knew meeting the in-laws in the short term was impossible, they wanted to show respect for Rao Jie. Thus, they intended to give her a dowry to ensure she could live well.
Naturally, they wouldn't ask for a bride price, so there was no need to mention it. By providing funding for Rao Jie’s shop as a form of dowry, it didn’t count as traditional dowry, so there was no need for any bride price either.
Rao Jie could sense the good intentions of the Wu Family Parents. She appreciated their gesture but felt embarrassed to accept the money. Unsure how to express herself without disappointing them, she looked towards Wu Rong for help.
Wu Rong was usually quite sharp-witted, so when he saw Rao Jie’s expression, he understood her stance. He proactively addressed his parents, saying, "No need for that. Our marriage is our own affair; we don’t want any of those traditional customs like dowries or bride prices. Besides, I’ve already married her; what’s the point of all these formalities?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Father Wu gave him a light smack on the back of his head and said, "That mindset is wrong. Now that you’ve brought her home, you should cherish and pamper her even more!"
Wu Rong was momentarily speechless.
Mother Wu chimed in, "We just want to treat our daughter-in-law better; what’s wrong with that? I’ve raised you both for so many years; now that we have another person in the family, I naturally want to make up for what I missed before."
When Mother Wu became unreasonable, Wu Rong found himself at a loss.
Wu Xin immediately interjected, "For my brother, I disagree; for my sister-in-law, I agree! Hahaha!"
Rao Jie shot Wu Xin an exasperated look; this was not the time for jokes.
In the end, she had no choice but to speak up herself. "Parents," she quickly agreed, "there's really no need. Wu Rong and I are doing well as we are. Besides, I still need more time to learn and don’t know how things will be arranged in the future. It’s better to focus on improving my skills first. I understand your good intentions; let’s hold off on this until I’m ready to open a shop."
Rao Jie knew that the Wu Family Parents genuinely cared for her and didn’t want to hurt their feelings; she could only buy some time for now.
Rao Jie was speaking the truth, and it made sense. Therefore, the Wu Family Parents decided not to insist any further. They turned around and reprimanded Wu Rong for not being considerate of Rao Jie. Wu Rong felt frustrated and didn’t want to argue with his parents. Although his assets were not as substantial as those of the Wu Family Parents, they were still considerable enough that he didn’t need to rely on them.
