Although Wu Rong didn't think much of Rao Jie's family, he held great respect for her grandmother. At her grave, he sincerely promised to take care of Rao Jie for a lifetime. They bowed in front of the grave before leaving the cemetery.
Once they arrived at the place where Rao Jie grew up, she couldn't help but want to show Wu Rong some of her favorite things: her favorite snack shop, her favorite little restaurant, her favorite park, her elementary school, her high school, and the old house where she had lived with her grandmother for many years.
However, when they finally reached the old house, they were shocked to find that it had been demolished. Rao Jie stood in front of the pile of rubble, completely bewildered.
Wu Rong surveyed the area and said, "It looks like there was a demolition in the neighborhood, and judging by how it looks, it must have been some time ago. Didn't you know?"
Rao Jie shook her head mechanically. "No one told me. Maybe my parents forgot."
As Rao Jie stood there in confusion in front of what used to be her community, people returning from work passed by. One young girl recognized Rao Jie and excitedly approached her. "Rao Jie! It's really you! You've come back!"
The girl was a former classmate from middle school who had started working right after finishing college, so she had entered society earlier than Rao Jie. Although they had lost touch over the years, seeing an old friend brought a smile to both their faces.
The girl laughed and said, "When they announced the demolition, everyone was reluctant to leave and took photos to commemorate it. I thought you would come back; I didn't see you at all! You missed it all—everything is gone now."
Rao Jie felt embarrassed and replied, "I was busy with other things and didn't know anything about it."
The girl waved it off jokingly. "Oh well, it's all gone now anyway. But hey, you must have gotten a big chunk of money from it! Besides your share based on your household registration, I remember your grandmother transferred that old house into your name. That house was big; they must have compensated you quite a bit! Congratulations!"
Rao Jie froze for a moment, her expression shifting slightly. "Money?"
The girl nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! We were all so envious of you. At first, we thought your grandmother was just leaving you a rundown house that wouldn't even rent out; why would you need it? But who knew you'd suddenly get lucky? None of us expected this demolition to happen so suddenly. Your parents and brother didn't want it back then; they must regret it now."
Wu Rong's expression also changed at this revelation.
"By the way," the girl continued, "did you collect that deposit certificate? You should know how to handle it in the city better than I do. Should I keep mine on a fixed term or take it out for investment? I'm a bit worried about investing now since nothing is guaranteed anymore. I finally got tens of thousands; I need to be careful with it."
Rao Jie stared blankly at the girl as memories flooded back about Huang Xiang asking for her ID earlier. She murmured, "End of April?"
The girl paused for a moment before replying, "Yeah! The deposit certificates were distributed at the end of April. You should have received two: one based on your household registration and one based on the house. What? Did they only give you one?"
Rao Jie's face grew even paler at this realization.
She recalled how Huang Xiang had taken her ID and that Rao Gang knew about it too. Looking back now, she remembered how they often discussed things behind her back.
