In that moment, Tan Ming really wanted to get closer to him.
"Capital University, their music department is the best," Yan Qing thought to himself, then chuckled softly. "What am I dreaming about? As if they would want me with my poor grades!"
He shook his head and said, "Forget it, goodbye!" as he hopped on his bicycle, his figure disappearing from Tan Ming's sight.
When the college entrance exam results came out, Tan Ming unexpectedly ranked first in the entire city. However, his family would be furious to learn that he had applied to the Physical Education Department.
"With such grades, you should be going to the capital!"
Tan Gu found the apartment Tan Ming was renting and without a word, the two brothers got into a fight again. Tan Gu pinned Tan Ming down, slapping him left and right, pressing him for answers. "Are you coming back to repeat the year or not?"
The family hadn’t asked Tan Ming about his college applications. After Tan Ming left home, Tan Gu had visited his school and heard from his teacher that Tan Ming was studying diligently, as if he had suddenly become enlightened.
His family didn’t want to disturb him and felt that Tan Ming seemed to have a change of heart; they shouldn’t push him too hard. They didn’t inquire about his choice of major either. They believed Tan Ming was trying to compete with Tan Gu. After all, Tan Gu had been misled by his first-choice application and ended up repeating the year before getting into Capital University, where he was enrolled in one of the top programs. Tan Ming seemed determined to outdo him by choosing a similar school and major.
Little did they expect Tan Ming to pull such a stunt.
This time, when Tan Gu hit him, Tan Ming didn’t fight back; he just let him hit him. Every time Tan Gu asked whether he would repeat the year, his answer was always the same: "No!"
Eventually, with no other options left, Tan Gu changed his strategy and asked him, "Why? Why do you insist on going to that university?"
Tan Gu didn’t believe that Tan Ming would give him a reason, but surprisingly, Tan Ming replied, "Because I have an appointment."
At the New Student Ceremony, Tan Ming stood on stage as the representative for the freshmen and delivered a speech. The audience below was restless.
They were all discussing how many points Tan Ming scored on the exam and how it was such a pity that he had slipped through the cracks yet still managed to get into a prestigious university.
Among those seated in the audience was Yan Qing. Listening to the noisy chatter around him, he glanced at the person on stage and remarked to those beside him, "That guy is really handsome!"
In the evening, at the playground social gathering, Yan Qing was the center of attention.
After stepping off the stage, he was surrounded by a crowd, all urging him to sing, laughing and chatting together. Tan Ming approached him without caring about anyone else's gaze. He extended his hand towards Yan Qing, introducing himself simply as Tan Ming.
Yan Qing quickly shook his hand, responding with a casual, "You too, Yan Qing." He didn’t recognize Tan Ming and had already forgotten their previous encounter. After that, he returned to his lively conversation with those around him.
Everyone meets countless people in their lifetime, and Tan Ming was just one among many that Yan Qing had encountered. Just another face in the crowd—nothing special at all.
He didn’t pay much attention to the tall guy who had come over to greet him, just as he would brush past many others throughout his day. Moreover, at that moment, he was caught up in the excitement of starting a new school year and making a few friends.
Later that night, Tan Ming added him on social media. However, things took an unfortunate turn when Yan Qing’s sudden fame led to his photos being shared online, turning him into a target for harassment as people mistook him for a contestant in some beauty pageant. He mistakenly assumed Tan Ming was one of those harassers and let his friend request sink into oblivion.
In the dormitory, his roommates chatted about girlfriends. Xu Le asked Tan Ming, "If you like him, why don’t you just go after him?"
Tan Ming replied, "I don’t want to disturb him."
Indeed, as he had said, he never appeared before Yan Qing again. Their brief encounter across thousands of miles had ended before it even began.
Tan Ming thought to himself, realizing that it wasn’t his own actions that thwarted him but rather Yan Qing’s indifference towards him. He was self-aware enough to understand this.
