Park Bucheng stared in the direction where Wu Meiling's bodyguard had disappeared, his eyes flickering with uncertainty. Damn it, what are these people up to? Just as he was about to follow, his phone suddenly vibrated.
"Come to my office immediately." Li Zhenghao's text was short and commanding.
With a sigh, Park Bucheng turned and headed toward the office. The night breeze dispersed the thin sweat on his forehead and the tension from earlier in the bar. Damn, this night felt like a roller coaster; his nerves were about to snap. What kind of trouble is Li Zhenghao stirring up at this hour? It better not be another thankless task, he thought to himself, quickening his pace.
As he pushed open the office door, a heavy scent of cigar smoke hit him, nearly making him cough. Li Zhenghao was lounging on a leather sofa, fiddling with a lighter. The flickering flame cast shadows on his ever-changing face, reminiscent of an actor on stage, full of unpredictable emotions.
"Sit." Li Zhenghao gestured to the chair across from him, his tone low yet authoritative.
Park Bucheng obediently sat down, feigning a look of trepidation. Inside, however, he was rapidly calculating what this old fox was really after. Is he planning to use me as cannon fodder?
"You’re quite clever," Li Zhenghao suddenly spoke up. "You know when to speak and when to keep quiet." He paused, his gaze piercing as if he could see right through Park's thoughts. "In this day and age, only the smart survive."
Park Bucheng lowered his head, not daring to respond. In moments like this, playing dumb was the best strategy. The more one says, the more mistakes one makes; less talk means fewer errors; silence is golden—wisdom from our ancestors that holds true.
"I have a task for you." Li Zhenghao extinguished his cigar, his eyes sharp as knives. "Lead a team to gather intelligence in Southern District."
Park's heart skipped a beat. Southern District? Isn’t that the competitor’s territory? This old fox wants me to walk into a death trap? Or is he testing my loyalty?
"Boss, I... I’m not sure I have the capability..." He deliberately stuttered, putting on an expression of difficulty while quickly analyzing the situation in his mind.
"Stop pretending in front of me!" Li Zhenghao sneered. "You did well back at the bar. Why are you acting like a coward now?"
Park's heart sank. Damn it, this old fox has seen right through me. It seems there’s no escaping this trip to Southern District.
"You’ll lead the team; Jingang and Li Meili will go with you," Li Zhenghao stated firmly. "I want to know what’s been happening in Southern District within three days."
Park Bucheng gritted his teeth. Jin Gang was notorious for being a brute, strong in body but simple-minded. Li Meili, on the other hand, was a scheming vixen, a femme fatale with a venomous heart. The combination of these two was like a ticking time bomb. Li Zhenghao was playing with fire or perhaps trying to use them as pawns.
"Boss, about Jin Gang and Li Meili..." Park Bucheng tentatively began, hoping to suggest different candidates.
"What? Are you being picky now?" Li Zhenghao shot him a sideways glance. "It's those two, take it or leave it!"
With no choice, Park Bucheng could only comply. "Understood," he replied softly, but inside he was calculating how to protect himself during this perilous journey.
After leaving the office, Park Bucheng didn’t head back to his room but went straight to the training room. Since he was leading a team into enemy territory, he needed to be fully prepared. He sat cross-legged and began to meditate, practicing the Graceful Wave Steps.
In the stillness of the night, moonlight poured through the window and enveloped him like a thin veil. With each breath, a strange sensation surged within him. The mantra of Graceful Wave Steps echoed in his mind, and his body felt as if it had become weightless, like a feather dancing in the wind.
"Damn, this feels great." Park Bucheng opened his eyes with a smile curling at the corners of his mouth. This Graceful Wave Steps truly was a life-saving skill.
The next morning, Jin Gang and Li Meili reported for duty. Jin Gang's muscular frame and the gold chain around his neck made him look like a nouveau riche. Li Meili wore tight leather attire with striking red lips, exuding an alluring charm like a rose with thorns.
"I heard you’re leading the team?" Jin Gang scoffed, "With that little frame of yours?"
Li Meili crossed her arms and sneered, "What does the boss think? Letting a newbie lead?"
Park Bucheng pretended not to hear them and focused intently on studying the map of Southern District, tracing his fingers over it as if plotting secret pathways. These two would soon find out what they were in for.
"The plan is as follows," he said while pointing at the map. "We’ll split into three groups. Jin Gang will charge through the front door to create chaos and draw fire. Li Meili, you’ll go to the club to gather intel using your charm to seduce those hot-headed fools. I’ll infiltrate their stronghold to find crucial information."
"Why do you get to go to the stronghold?" Jin Gang glared at him. "That’s the most dangerous place!"
"This is clearly the safest position," Li Meili complained. "Why should we take the risk while you sit back and enjoy yourself?"
Park Bucheng sighed. "Because I can do this." With that, his figure suddenly blurred, and in the next moment, he appeared behind the two of them. "Any more questions?"
Jingang and Li Meili were left speechless, staring in disbelief. This was just too bizarre.
As night fell, the operation began. Jingang indeed proved himself; he single-handedly stirred up chaos at the entrance of a nightclub in the Southern District, throwing punches and kicks that left the security guards crying for help. Li Meili was not idle either; using her stunning looks and alluring figure, she effortlessly slipped into the VIP area of the club, downing drink after drink and extracting plenty of useful information.
Meanwhile, Park Bucheng utilized Graceful Wave Steps, gliding like a ghost through the shadows of the enemy's stronghold. Whenever patrols passed by, he evaded them like a wisp of smoke, making not a sound.
"These fools," he scoffed to himself. "They can't even spot a shadow."
Suddenly, hurried footsteps echoed nearby. Park Bucheng quickly slipped into the darkness. He saw several men in black hurriedly passing by, clutching documents and looking tense.
"The plan is ready; we just need the boss's order."
"Heh, this time we must wipe out those scum from the West District."
Park Bucheng's eyes narrowed. It seemed the Southern District was planning to take action against the West District. Just as he prepared to follow them, he felt a chill at the back of his neck.
"Don't move." A cold voice whispered in his ear. "Who sent you?"
