"Adopted? What are you saying? I didn't catch that," I asked my cousin anxiously over the phone. 0
"You were adopted, didn't you know?" The response sent another tremor through my heart. He didn't know that since my childhood, my life had been filled with phrases like, "You're not born from your mother; you're adopted by your parents..." 0

"Jing Jing, when you come home for the New Year, remember to buy a set of clothes for each of your nephews and nieces. Oh, and don't forget to give out red envelopes; make sure to prepare the money in advance. It's best to get new bills from the bank; it has good meaning," my father hurriedly told me as soon as I arrived at the entrance of his barbecue shop, barely having time to shake off my fatigue after getting off the train. 0
"Okay, I'll go buy them right away." 0
With a complicated mood, I dragged my luggage home, taking about ten minutes. I was still holding in my frustration when I stepped through the door. 0
"Mother," she said eagerly, "your dad said to buy a set of clothes for Ting Ting and Fei Fei each and pack a red envelope. Hurry up; let's head out now." 0
"I know, I've prepared the red envelopes. You can come with me to buy clothes; I don't know what they like," I said as I dropped my luggage and immediately left with Mother. 0
Once we reached the nearby mall, after picking out a set of clothes for each nephew and niece, a smile finally appeared on Mother's face. 0
"Jing Jing, look at your aunts; they all wear silver bracelets. One time, your aunt found a gold ring while shopping at the market. Your sister even bought her a pair of gold earrings." 0
"Mom, when I have money, I'll buy you a silver bracelet too. Gold is too expensive, but I can afford silver." 0
"Sigh, I just see everyone else having things; after being with your dad for so many years, I have nothing," Mother said while glancing at me. 0
"Mom, let me take you shopping; we'll buy one now, and when I have money later, I'll get you another." 0
"Okay, I know a place that has really beautiful bracelets." 0
But oh Mom, your daughter just spent four and a half hours on a train wearing last year's clothes and rushed home without even drinking a sip of water to buy things for your grandchildren. 0

I remember that year when the college entrance exam results came out; I didn't do well. 0
My older brother said, "Don't go to college; what's the point of attending a third-rate university? If you want to learn something, I'll help you find resources; we can take adult education exams." 0
After submitting my college applications, it seemed like my brother forgot what he had said. 0
I enrolled in a computer class to learn Photoshop and then found a job at a photo editing studio. Those days were truly tough; after two months of learning photo editing and delivering goods at various bus stations, carrying glass covers weighing forty or fifty pounds up and down countless flights of stairs left my arms unable to lift anymore. After two months, I received my first paycheck—only two hundred yuan. It was little money but it was earned by me. From that moment on, I never asked my parents for money again. As my salary increased significantly—so much that even the boss's wife became unhappy and started nitpicking—I chose to resign. The atmosphere at home was also tense; I always felt excluded when I returned. 0

After leaving home and meeting many different girls, I realized that other mothers teach their children how to navigate life while mine only taught me how to cry or curse. What kind of brother doesn't call his sister even once in one or two years? Perhaps this is why I can't get close to my brothers. 0
