On the fifth floor of the County Government Building in Changlin City, Lin Xiao had been working for over a year, yet the way things were done remained unchanged. "If you can't handle it, just get lost," came the sharp reprimand from Executive Deputy County Head Wang Kai. The echoes of his scolding reverberated through the offices, filling the space with a cacophony of discontent.
Lin Xiao kept her head down, observing with a calm demeanor. She neither admitted fault nor defended herself, accepting the tirade with an inner peace. What could she have done wrong? The arrangement of desks and chairs was standard protocol set by Luo Qianwei. The maps of the province, city, and county were installed by the advertising department under her supervision. After the cleaning staff finished tidying up, she had gone over everything again, ensuring it sparkled cleaner than her own dishes.
Beside her, Luo Qianwei was nodding and apologizing profusely, occasionally turning to criticize Lin Xiao further. "Little Lin," he urged, "Wang Kai said to take note of this." Reluctantly, Lin Xiao pretended to jot down Wang Kai's comments, though they were merely an excuse for him to vent his frustrations.
Just as Wang Kai finished berating her and was about to storm out, the newly appointed county chief entered, accompanied by County Party Secretary Song Hongjun. In an instant, Wang Kai's expression transformed from stormy to sunny as he bent low to shake hands with the new chief.
Lin Xiao quickly sidestepped and quietly exited the chief's office, laughter and pleasantries trailing behind her. In such situations, she was not even deemed worthy enough to serve tea or water due to her lower rank.
Lin Xiao understood that Wang Kai's anger stemmed from his own frustrations; it just happened that she was the one responsible for this matter. However, being on the receiving end of such a tirade for over ten minutes was truly unpleasant.
Once outside the chief's office, instead of returning directly to her own workspace, she slipped into the restroom and stared at the ceiling, fighting back tears. She spent two minutes collecting herself in a stall before emerging, repeatedly telling herself not to feel sad.
As she returned to her main office, Zhou Bin approached her with feigned concern. "Don't take it to heart," he whispered. "Old Wang is just frustrated and taking it out on you."
Lin Xiao smiled back at Zhou Bin; she knew all too well what was happening. The position of Yurou County Chief had been vacant for three months, with Wang Kai managing government affairs in the interim. Everyone speculated that he would finally be promoted this time around, but unexpectedly, Li Hao—a man just past thirty—was appointed instead.
The worst part was that Wang Kai had missed this opportunity at his age; barring any surprises, he would soon be stepping down from his role in two years as part of a larger political transition, fading into history.
Wang Kai had steadily climbed the ranks from grassroots to his current position as Executive Deputy County Head for over thirty years. On the other hand, Li Hao had taken a different path, graduating from Xiangtian University with a seamless transition through undergraduate, master's, and doctoral studies. After graduation, he was recruited into Gulou District and was rapidly promoted to County Head in just over four years.
Zhou Bin was eager to gossip a bit more with Lin Xiao when Luo Qianwei entered the room. "Lin Xiao, come here," she called out.
Following Luo Qianwei into the adjacent office, Lin Xiao listened as she said, "Executive Deputy County Head Wang Kai is in a bad mood today. I can only go along with what he says. You know how leaders can be; they might lose their temper, but don’t take it personally."
Luo Qianwei offered some bland words of comfort. Typically, Lin Xiao would respond with her usual gentle humility, assuring them that everything was fine. However, today felt different. Perhaps it was due to some unresolved grievances or simply a need for an outlet; after two years of diligent work without any disciplinary issues, she felt secure enough to speak her mind.
"It's alright, Luo Ren," she said with a smile. "What’s work if not just that? If the leadership needs to vent, just let me know in advance, and I’ll be your punching bag, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently." Her tone and demeanor remained consistent.
Luo Qianwei was taken aback by Lin Xiao's unexpected boldness and looked at her with surprise. Just as she was about to respond, the County Head entered the room. "County Head, you’re here in person?" Lin Xiao exclaimed as she quickly stepped aside and greeted him softly before exiting.
