Wang Kai glanced over without diverting his gaze, while his assistant secretary nodded and smiled, acknowledging Lin Xiao. Lin Xiao called Luo Qianwei to inform her that everyone had arrived.
At nine o'clock, Li Hao emerged from the elevator in a formal suit, with Luo Qianwei following closely behind, holding her handbag at an angle that allowed her to walk beside him. Lin Xiao stood at the door, and after the county chief got into the car, he made a note of a minor issue that had arisen due to last-minute changes and handed it to Luo Qianwei before the county chief turned around.
The morning's research went relatively smoothly. The new county chief seemed unfamiliar with the specifics of Yurou County and mostly listened without giving many instructions.
During lunch, the leaders sat at one table while the staff gathered at another. Lin Xiao waited until the leaders began their meal before returning to his seat, quickly eating some staple food to fill his stomach.
Twenty minutes later, he coordinated with the research unit for the afternoon session. A waiter approached to inform them that fruit was being served at the leaders' table. Lin Xiao hurriedly called the chef to notify him that the car should be brought to the front entrance and that the air conditioning should be turned on in advance, while he stood by the entrance of the leaders' table.
In the evening, after finishing up around six o'clock, Li Hao took Luo Qianwei aside to arrange several key tasks for the upcoming days. At the end of their meeting, Li Hao did not mention changing secretaries.
Luo Qianwei thought this must mean he had no issues with Lin Xiao; however, he silently resolved to look for a more suitable candidate. He felt relieved, as it seemed he was satisfied with how things were going so far; he had passed the first hurdle.
Lin Xiao's work ability was certainly not in question, especially since he had been trained by Hua Jie. After using the restroom and drinking a couple of glasses of water, Lin Xiao noted down his work schedule before packing up to head home.
When accompanying leaders on rural research trips, secretaries couldn't leave their posts freely, which meant they often had to hold off on using the restroom. Since his second day as Hua Jie's secretary, Lin Xiao had learned to manage his thirst by only moistening his throat.
After finishing work at eight o'clock in the evening and stepping out of the office building, Lin Xiao looked up at the starry sky and finally felt his tense nerves relax. He considered his first day a success; if he could endure for a month, he would secure his position as this county chief's secretary. Lin Xiao resolved to seize this opportunity.
"Congratulations Director Lin on your triumphant return!" Shang Juan exclaimed as she stuffed a lucky cat figurine into Lin Xiao's hands as soon as he entered.
Looking at the table full of barbecue dishes, Lin Xiao realized they were waiting for him; having them around in this unfamiliar city felt comforting.
After receiving Lin Xiao's text message, Kuai Huitian leveraged her connections from over a decade in government work and her geographical advantage in the old city area to conduct an in-depth background check on Li Hao.
Li Hao was a male in his forties with a PhD in Management from Jiangdong University and had led talent introduction initiatives in Jiangdong Province. He had previously served as Party Secretary of Gulou District and Qi Town, Deputy District Chief of Gulou District, and Minister of Organization.
Shang Juan chuckled while nibbling on grilled corn and said, "Sister Hui, what you mentioned is all available on Baidu Encyclopedia."
"Tell us something mysterious that nobody knows," Kui Hui said.
Li Hao replied, "I have a girlfriend studying abroad, but no one has ever seen her."
"Is that it?" Shang Juan said, expecting a big revelation. Lin Xiao was also waiting for something juicy, but that was all there was.
Kui Hui shrugged. "People in Gulou District say Li Hao is a workaholic, hardly ever takes a break, and doesn’t talk much. There’s not much information to go around."
Lin Xiao probably knew all this already; she might even know more since she had worked in Gulou District for a year. Li Hao was the good-looking representative of the county leadership, completely different from the trendy young men of today. He had the typical looks of a northern man—tall, with a square face, thick eyebrows, and big eyes—he looked just like the male lead in a serious drama, full of righteousness.
Lin Xiao chuckled to herself, thinking that if he were to play an undercover cop in a crime film, he would probably get shot before he even stepped through the door.
She remembered hearing Xu Ran say that when Li Hao had just arrived in Gulou District six months earlier, a provincial leader had taken notice of him and wanted to introduce his daughter to him. For most people, this would be like winning the lottery, but he turned it down because he had a girlfriend.
Lin Xiao kept this to herself.
Hua Jie had once said that the first rule for a secretary is to keep their mouth shut; skills come second.
"So does that mean the County Chief isn’t married yet?" Shang Juan nudged Lin Xiao playfully and teased, "Shouldn’t our Lin Xiao go after the domineering CEO?"
As soon as those words left her mouth, the atmosphere shifted dramatically. Lin Xiao's smile faded, and Kui Hui shot Shang Juan a warning glance.
Realizing she had misspoken, Shang Juan wished she could bite her own tongue. She quickly finished her corn and found an excuse to head inside.
That was just how Juan was; she meant no harm. Kui Hui hesitated before continuing, but Lin Xiao could see what she wanted to say.
She felt no guilt about her thoughts; however, she knew how fearsome gossip could be.
