Chapter Six 0

"When the fears of the night dissipated, I found my heart gradually calming down, but perhaps, this was just another beginning." 0

I opened my eyes to the morning sun filtering through the gaps in the curtains, casting mottled shadows on the floor. The remnants of last night's dream lingered vividly in my mind—my grandmother's kind smile and gentle voice seemed to echo in my ears. I got up and walked to the window, pulling the curtains wide open to let the sunlight pour in unabashedly, dispelling the lingering gloom. Taking a deep breath, I inhaled the earthy fragrance mixed with an unknown floral scent; this familiar aroma brought me a sense of comfort. 0

Had the fear truly vanished? 0

I looked at my reflection in the mirror; my face was no longer pale as before, and my eyes regained their clarity. I reached out to touch the cool surface of the mirror, and the real sensation at my fingertips reassured me that those days of nightmarish experiences seemed to have truly passed. I even began to doubt whether that oppressive fear, that lingering unease, those midnight crashes, and shattered glass were merely a figment of a surreal nightmare. 0

"Knock, knock, knock..." 0

The sound of knocking shattered the morning tranquility. I wondered who it could be at this hour. Approaching the door, I peered through the peephole and saw my mother's figure. I opened the door to find her holding a thermos, a hint of worry etched on her face. 0

"Xiao Yu, I heard from Aunt Zhang that you were unwell a few days ago, so I made some soup for you," she said as she stepped into the room and placed the thermos on the table. 0

"Mom, I'm fine now; I've recovered," I replied with a smile, warmth flooding my heart. My mother's care was always so timely and comforting. 0

"Really? You look much better," she scrutinized me closely, her eyes filled with concern. "You've seemed so distracted these past few days; I was worried about you..." 0

"I really am fine, Mom," I reassured her again. "If you don't believe me, ask Zhang Qiang; we had dinner together last night—he can vouch for me." 0

Only then did my mother relax, a smile breaking across her face. "That's good to hear. You always make me worry; you need to take care of yourself." 0

"I understand, Mom," I said with a smile. 0

My mother chatted with me for a while, going on about the little details of life, her tone filled with concern for me. Then she stood up to leave. "No need, I'll see you later. You should rest," she said as she walked out of the room. 0

I accompanied her to the door, watching her figure fade away, warmth filling my heart. Back in my room, I opened the thermos, and a rich aroma of chicken soup wafted towards me. I poured myself a bowl and sipped it slowly; my mother's love was like this hot soup, warming not just my stomach but also my heart. 0

After finishing the soup, I walked to the window and opened it again, taking a deep breath. The sky was a brilliant blue, the sun shining brightly; everything seemed so beautiful and real. The fear dissipated, and hope was reborn. 0

Yet, there remained a lingering unease in my heart that I couldn't shake off. The shattered glass, the mysterious restoration, the old man's cryptic words... Was all of this merely coincidence? 0

I picked up my phone and dialed the old man's number. "Hello, elder, I want to know more about my ancestor." 0

"What do you want to know?" His voice was deep and hoarse, as if it came from a distant time and space. 0

"Everything," I said firmly. "I feel like this is just the beginning..." 0
